NVIDIA has a GSync demo you can use to verify it works as intended.  However I believe you're supposed to leave VSync off, otherwise the monitor controls the syncing and thus ruins the point of GSync.

 

For power management, leave it on adaptive.

I can't answer a lot of those questions, but I can answer 1.

G-Sync already stops screen tearing and the sort. Prior to an Nividia update, disabling V-Sync started to create screen tearing like a normal monitor would. I think you should try both G-Sync and V-Sync enabled, then try G-Sync enabled and V-Sync disabled.  See what works for you.

Turn G-Sync ON and V-Sync OFF. Having Vsync on ruins the whole point of GSync as you get HUGE frame drops (50%!)

Turn V-Sync off in the ingame settings.

 

In the NVIDIA control panel, you have two options with how G-Sync operates. G-Sync will always be disabled if your framerate goes above the max refresh frequency of the monitor. When it does, you can choose either to activate V-Sync in its place (which will have some input lag), or do nothing (which will reintroduce tearing). To control this, turn V-Sync On or Off in the NVIDIA control panel under Manage 3D Settings -> Global Settings -> Vertical Sync.

Well, if you prevent your framerate from going that high then you'll never get into that situation, so yes that is something you can do, although I would say it doesn't "solve" it so much as "avoids" it
