RX 480 Crashing/ Radeon Wattman

My display has been freezing for a second, going black for 2 seconds and then recovering about once a week since early January. this just happened again for the fourth time I think and it gives me the same notification every time. I don't remember it word for word but it was something like: Radeon Wattman settings have been restored after an unexpected system failure. Whats Radeon Wattman, why is my system crashing and recovering, how can I fix it?

That's AMD's overclocking tool built into the drivers. Are you getting black screens during gaming?

My system will do the same thing, display freezes and then goes black, but for mine, I have to restart my hole system, I couldn't find another way out of it.

wattman is a amd program that allowes you to change graphics card setting, I don't know much about it, so I leave mine at default. Someone help us out please.

  • 6 months later...

Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem? I'm experiencing the same issue and started an RMA request at the store. Still i'd rather just fix the problem.

Have any of you tried to rollback the driver to a previous version?

These things pop up from time to time.

System specs:

4790k

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD

a few HDD's

I use two in crossfire in one of my rigs - Haven't used it in a while, but I seem to remember a driver causing this.  I remember doing a fresh install of a driver, completely removed via DDU and reinstalling.

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700k @ 4.8ghz | Motherboard: GIGABYTE Gaming Z270XP-SLI | Graphics Card: AORUS GeForce® GTX 1080 Ti | RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mz |Storage: 1 x Samsung 250GB 960 Evo PCIe NVMe | 2 x Seagate 1TB [raid1] - overflow stuff | 2 x Samsung 850 EVO 500gb [raid0] - games | PSU: Corsair CX750M | Case: Corsair 400C | Cooling: Kraken x62 AIO | 3 x Corsair AF140 | 1x Noctua  NF-F12 | SoundSoundblaster Zx through  KRK Rokit G5 monitors

Dude, it might be a bit early to say but great advice.

I just used DDU and now heroes of the storm actually loaded. Before this it would always just quit at the loading screen.

Thank you very much!

How'd you get on, did a fresh install work?

  • 4 weeks later...

I built a new system with the rx480 and all my problems have vanished into thin air. I guess the problem had something to do with my old motherboard which was very old.

Might have to DDU my RX460 drivers n see if it helps. Since my Windows 10 Insider Preview updated 2 days ago Ive been getting the same issue especially when I overclock. I used to be able to my GPU to 1350mhz/2000mhz while benching & 1330mhz/2000mhz while actually gaming (core/memory respectively) without artifacts or black screens/crashes. Now I can't hold 1320mhz/1900mhz without these problems.

Gonna try the DDU n see what happens
