Google Enables Google Play Store Beta on Acer and Asus's Chromebooks; Support for Other Chromebooks Coming Soon

Last week Google released Stable channel 53.0.2785.129 (Platform version: 8530.90.0) for the Acer Chromebook R11 (C738T) as well as the ASUS Chromebook Flip. The update contains numerous bug fixes, security updates, feature improvements as well as the Google Play Store (beta). Those, who have already received the new stable channel version, will need to enable the PlayStore in the Chrome settings.

For whatever reason, Google has launched the play store on Chrome OS but only for two devices. However, support for essentially every chromebook out there is coming soon. This falls in line with Google's announcement that it will be porting over Chrome OS and Android's best features over to each other. Chromebooks are great devices for just browsing the web, but other than that there's not much you can do with them. By putting the play store on chromebooks Google could potentially increase the productivity of Chromebooks. Now tons of games and other apps can be used on two Chromebooks, and this functionality will be enabled on the rest soon.

 

This is quite interesting and I want to see how this will go ahead. Thoughts?

Great news. Chromebooks all of a sudden aren't just something you can recommend to your grandparents since they don't need more. Android compatibility means that Chromebooks could legitimately replace a lot of peoples' main machines.

This also means that the Android version of Crossover works on X86 based Chromebooks as well, meaning that, yes, you can install and run Steam games on Chrome OS now.

Yup, just got it. Most of the apps seem rather laggy, and the Flip has 4GB ram over my Nexus 5X's 2GB, which runs these apps fine. I guess it's a case of optimisation in these early stages.
