gaming $850-$900 Gaming Rig, Help?

This is my first time building a PC so I'm not really sure what to look for at this price point. Any general tips or knowledge that could help me out would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

$360 (USD or CAD?) for an RX 480 is WAY overpriced! Get a 6GB GTX 1060 instead for $250-260. Use the 100 bucks on peripherals.

Any Z170 mobo with a LGA1151 should work

honestly the cost to overclock would probably be more than 100 because you need to buy a more expensive motherboard and a more expensive cpu along with an aftermarket cooler. also this is a modified version of your build i only changed the ram and the gpu. you can change the ssd to a better one if you want to know a good place to spend more money.

I meant that he should get a compatible mobo and CPu, then he can get a cooler later when he needs/wants more power

Yes they do, idk what you are talking about.

At least, Haswell ones did...

not for the 6th generation intel. i have built 3 computers with the i5 6600k. none of them have come with a cooler.

At least, Haswell ones did...

yes you are correct the haswell k versions did. starting with the 6th gen they stopped shipping the k versions with cpu coolers because very few people used them.

Nice, If OP wants to save a bit more than he can get something a little cheaper like a Corsair H55 or 212 Evo if he wants a more basic cooler

Hope you have at least looked up several tutorials. My first PC built for gaming was back in late 2013. I had looked up tons of videos on assembling PCs and already had some experience building my previous, non-gaming PCs. 

 

Be prepared to troubleshoot if your PC doesn't post. Usually the first suspect will be your power supply, like a power cable you did not connect. If nothing happens at all when you push the power button, check to see you connected the power & reset switch IO. 

 

If it does post, you may boot straight into BIOS (typically graphical bios on most modern motherboards). You will want to set your drive boot orders and disable IGPU if enabled to be able to get video out of your graphics card. If you are installing Windows from a USB drive, then you may boot straight into the installation. 

 

Once booted into windows download all current drivers, such as your display drivers from either AMD, Intel, or Nvidia.

 

Lastly, cable management will be something you may want to consider. Look at what cables you will need and which ones you will not. Tuck away unneeded cables and zip tie them. Zip tie or velcro other cables that connect to your motherboard and gpu. This will make your PC aesthetically pleasing as well as manageable in later times. 

 

Download Steam and Origin once you are done and enjoy the better side of gaming.
