Help: Android 6.0 locked my mSD card

rhavimarques

TL:DR: got a 64gb micro sd card that i cant format, windows says its write protected, Diskpart says "the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.".

long story is my HTC one M8 started acting up, apps not responding etc, till it finally got caught in an endless home launcher stopped working loop and i had to do a factory reset, i was using the micro SD card as internal storage up till then, and i knew doing a factory reset would mean i'd lose all the data there, and thats fine, but when i booted up the fresh system again (no errors now, at least) it told me the micro SD card needed to be formatted to work, and then failed to format it. windows says its write protected (also shows 16mb of space), while diskpart shows the 60gb size, but says the data format is "RAW", and can't seem to format that either.

any ideas?

Maybe the SD card failed which is what caused your phone to crash?

I edit my posts a lot.

Is it off-brand? Most SD cards have good tolerances for writes. Not as high as SSD's but still plenty for phone use.

When you used diskpart, did you use "clean all"?

not off-brand, its a sony 64gb 70mb/s SD XC 1 thingie thing, suposed to be decent.

i used "clean" after selecting which disk i wanted, what's the difference between that and clean all? (don't want to clean my HDD by accident here)

It'll write zeroes over the SD card. I would see what Sony's warranty is like if you have your receipt.

after that would i be able to format it and use again?

the thing is, i live in brazil, and i believe i bought this at B&H in manhattan, usually warranty is either not covered overseas or its just not really worth it.

If it works, yes. It sounds like your phone may have broken the SD card in some way whether the controllers failed or excessive writes were performed.

Warranties should still cover. It's not like it's a physical object tied to Manhattan or purchased from a street vendor. Calling Sony would be the only way to find out. You could also try Recuva. I've heard good things but I've never used it and can't tell if it would work with SD's.

You're being stopped by the controller. It's dead.

Check on the warranty. Prices for tech in South America suck whenever I'm in Uruguay/Argentina and Colombia so I'd imagine that Brazil may be in a similar price bracket, but I could be wrong.
