Do I need a CM rated cable?

DeadlyPilot

So I'm very confused about the different cable jacket certifications. I know CMR is rated for going from floor to floor, and CMP is rated for going through plenums, but what is a CM rated cable? What if I just want to run a cable through my walls on a single floor. Is that what CM is for?

Also, is the cable required just dependent on my buildings fire code? (I live in the US)

Edit: Found this from sewelldirect.com

CM

"All in-wall applications; permitted in residential riser applications for buildings with 1-2 families or in risers with a raceway or fireproof shaft; not permitted in plenum spaces"

How true is this?

Thanks!

CM is general use, CMR is for cable tray or bundled vertical runs. CMR is supposed to extinguish itself faster if it is ignited. CM doesn't really burn like gasoline either but either should be fine for most installations if you're doing a pretty small number of cables (~15 or less).

None of it will burn your house down and nothing is required by law or fire code unless you're bundling a ton of them together, for a run or two it doesn't really matter.

Could you link me to where it says its not required? I'd gladly use whatever as long as im not breaking any codes/laws
