What is Polaris and Vega? (AMD)

nextniko

Sorry for the ignorance, I've been gaming on my PS3/PS4 for a while leaving my PC for a bit. So I started to stop following the tech news for GPUs/CPUs. Right now I'm a little confused because I know AMD is releasing this Polaris soon but I hear AMD is also releasing something called Vega. Is Vega going to compete with maybe the GTX 1080/GTX 1080TI or something?

Vega is coming after Polaris, and from what I've heard so far, Polaris is more mainstream and Vega is going to be the best they can do performance wise.  That said, what we've seen from Polaris so far is certainly no pushover!

Polaris and Vega are AMD's new architectures for graphics cards, like Pascal on Nvidia side.

We do not know any official details regarding performance, but yes, they are expected to compete with Nvidia's Pascal lineup.

Vega will most likely compete with the 1080/1080ti

If u want high performance gpus wait for vega. Polaris is more of a price/performance

One more question, could I cross fire with R9 290x and a Polaris card or should I just go single with Polaris?

AMD is generally pretty flexible but I think you would need both cards to be Polaris

Any other benefits from having 2 GPUs beside gaming?

Any sort of compute tasks will also benefit, possibly more so even than games would.  F@H for example would probably love 2 480X's in crossfire :)

This will not be possible because the gpus will not be using the same chipset (tonga, hawaii, fiji vs polaris). The only reason corssfiring between two generations (like an r9 290 and r9 390) is because they both have the same chipset (hawaii).

My Main PC:

CPUi5 3570k CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper T4 Motherboard: Asus p8z77-v pro  RAM: Crucial Balistic 2x4gb  GPU: Two PNY GTX 680's in SLI Case: Some rando Antec one  PSU: Thermaltake 1000w  Display: HP Elite Display 321i 23''  Storage: Samsung 840 Evo 128gb, Seagate Barracuda 1tb
