980 TI going into power save mode when F@H is folding?

I've been setting up F@H the last few minutes to start folding, but for some reason when it starts folding, it puts my GPU into power save mode (P8 power state) and my card clocks down to 405 mhz on the core and like 800 on the memory. I recently switched to windows 10 (fresh install) the card used to work perfectly fine in windows 8.1 whilst folding, so I'm wondering if its a windows 10 bug of some sort?

I used to fold on this card a lot on my previous windows 8.1 install when it was still on air, but that was on the stock BIOS. I'm now running a modified Ln2 BIOS that allows for higher memory overclocks @ the same voltage, so I was thinking maybe it's the BIOS that may be causing the issue.
I've also installed a different driver, thinking maybe it was the driver at fault, but it still does it. (The driver is the newest Nvidia one)

I also tried deleting the WU to get a new one, but it still did the same thing on the new WU.

Specs incase anyone needs em:

ASUS 980 TI Matrix Platinum
i3 6320 @ 4.4
ASRock Z170 OC Formula
G.Skill TridentZ 2x8Gb 3600 mhz 16-16-16-36
EVGA 1000 P2 PSU
Dimastech Mini V2 test bench
Full custom loop + 1080mm radiator

If anyone could suggest ideas to try, or knows how to fix it, I'd be really grateful

I'll try using the stock BIOS and see if it fixes it, will update my post if it fixes it.

cant you force 3d mode all the time and activate high performance instead of adaptive in nvcp, should fix it- at least temporarily

Still does it, the second it starts folding it throttles down.

You are 0.0% into the WU, just let it run for a bit and see if it still throttles down after an hour or so. Usually it stableizes quicker though

It's 16% done, but it's still sitting at 400 mhz, and the PPD is 5-7x lower than what it normally is when the card works as intended.

(100k PPD right now, i was averaging 600-735k PPD on windows 8.1 when it was working properly)

Maybe it's just a really shitty WU. Just let it finish and see what the next one does.

Are you trying your tests with something else open? I had a game that, once I popped up, cause my card to go into P8. It's possible that you have some other app causing the throttle.

Regardless, try pausing the WU, go into GPU-Z and ask it to retrieve the Bios. Immediately after the save window shows up (don't need to actually save it, you can just cancel it), resume folding and see what happens.

Same thing happens after doing what you said.

I closed everything that was open except GPU-Z and F@H as well.

I turned off G-Sync and changed my monitor to 120 hz as well just to see if that was causing something, that didn't change anything either.

Nope, even before in 8.1 I folded for 4 days straight with an OC and it never had any issues.

It doesn't even try to go to P2 or P0 mode, the second it starts folding it goes into P8 @ 405 mhz on core and 810 effective on the mem.

I asked about the OC because it could be causing an immediate driver crash (and thus the card goes down to 405mhz). Even if the message doesn't pop up. Still, if it's not OCed, I really don't know what to to....

Maybe try running a VM with Win 8.1 and try folding through there. See if the card downcloks as well.

Maybe a stupid question but is your cpu running at the right frequency? I had a similar issue where my cpu was getting stuck in a low power state and my 980 ti was clocking down to compensate for the cpu bottleneck.

I am having the same problem with my 970 actually, it's stuck at 4xx something

mhz while load is at 98% or so .. I think it happened shortly, if not directly after

i did a driver update, maybe you could try backtracking on drivers abit..

Did you remember to close and reopen the monitoring software of your choice? Sounds dumb, but in MSI Afterburner's case, it doesn't update the clocks whenever I reboot the driver, so it still showed 405 even though the actual clock was the correct one.

i had this problem on the first 361 driver, I had to downgrade to 359 until the new driver came out. Have you ever considered that it's a driver issue and rollback a version? That might fix it

I'll try using the stock BIOS and see if it fixes it, will update my post if it fixes it.

I have had this happening to one of my 750 tis and that was because of the driver crashing if ur running a overclock try turning that off or atleast dail it down

The card isnt overclocked, before I switched to z170 I could fold for days on end no problems at 1500 mhz core clock, I'm not sure what's going on with it.  I'm curious if it has something to do with my i3 or something, my 6700k shows up next week so I'll retest then.
