Reuse old pc into server/nas/streaming pc?

I have run a server earlier with a Linux fileshare setup, but it required local access to do anything with it.

So I'm looking for something that I can control with my main pc.

I just need it to work as an external hard drive array with raid 1 (backup) on a few hard drives.

It would also be nice, if I can use it to stream with as well, when needed.

Assuming I can get the content to it, as I'm not sure how well capture cards work when I'm using multi monitor gaming.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

"local access to do anything with it" so you want a desktop?

You could just use Windows if all the software you want is available on that - and use Remote Desktop.

If you want to use Linux, just install a distro with a desktop like Ubuntu (or Kubuntu / Xubuntu) or Mint - and use VLC.

When you say streaming, you want to send a capture of your game, over the network to the NAS and stream it from there with something like XSplit/OBS?

Windows 10 Pro or Windows Server sounds like your best option.

Only reason I say this is because you can use remote desktop built straight into the operating system... just plug in the local IP and the login info and you're all set.

As far as streaming goes... you're best to just stick with a single machine, but if you want to record, you can set the output file location to the other machine over the network so you don't fill up space on the machine you're streaming at.
