I lived in Japan for 8 months when I was 10-11. I went to French school, so I was never taught Japanese in an academic way.

Languages was never my strong side, so I never learned to speak it fluently. I can only do some phrases and maybe hold a very simple conversation.

However, i can read both Kanji and Hiragan to some extend and I can understand Japanese if spoken slowly.

I can recommend to just stick to it. You only get better by practicing.

Nice, maybe I need to be around people with the same interests then in learning Japanese?

I haven't completed anything yet... but I have a vague semi-subconscious understanding of things...

This app helps: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Obenkyo

Also try duolingo and see if there are any cheap/free formal classes near your area...

then there's exposure... Personally I consume lots of Japanese media, mostly in translated/semi-translated form, that somewhat helps...

or if you know someone who can speak and read Japanese, it might be better to learn from him/her...

there are also lots of free JLPT review material on the web so that's one place to start...

Moved to Off Topic. General Discussion is for tech discussion that doesn't fit into the already existing sub-forums. Off Topic is strictly non-tech related stuff.

I grew up with Japanese parents that taught mid level Japanese, though I could never really read the language. I did teach myself more advanced words by watching subbed anime.

A big, biiiig warning though. Most fansubs are incorrect and watching anime should not be used to learn Japanese, only the context of words in a specific situation.

Adults are just kids with bigger wallets.
