looney
I have a dual xeon server which I will be using to drive everything' date=' once I can afford a Norco 4U case to transplant everything too. 2 x E5530's, Asus Z8NA-D6C motherboard & 24GB Corsair ECC memory. The problem is that the Norco 4U's (e.g the RPC-4224) are very expensive to ship here @ $400+ just for shipping...let alone the cost of the case itself. (really jealous of your case looney :P) [/quote']

Did you email norco? I emailed them and they send me the info for the european distirutor where i ended up buying the case.

Though i doubt there is one for Australia / New Zealand, but its worth a try.

Anyway, your added to the list :)

so i have a question, what do you think should count toward the size of the system:

example system:

5x 1tb RAID 5

3x 1tb HDD no raid,

120 GB SSD

option 1:

array -parity only, only actual arrays count and minus the parity, so in case of the example system 4TB

option 2:

array -parity and non os drives, minus parity again, so in case of the example system 7TB

option 3:

all arrays and drives -parity, so in case of the example system 7,12TB

please comment to this post instead of a reply so its easy for me to see what you want.

(i vote for option 1)

The build.

Its a very recent build, (yesterday), i basically upgraded my old data server.

Of the old server i salvaged the following components: CPU, RAM, HTP 2680, 2x seagate 2tb, 6x hitachi 2tb, and the SSD.

The rest is all new.

Array.

The server runs a program called FlexRaid under windows, this creates a RAID pool much like WHS v1 did.

Its a snapshot based raid so it will only create the parity files when you tell it to (or you schedule it).

This sort of raid is more then enough for simple A/V storage.

A nice thing about FlexRaid this is that in case of a complete raid failure you still have a lot of you files as its stored in simple NTFS.

At the moment there are still 8 drives running in RAID 5 under the 2680 controller.

When im done copying the data to the new array i will these 8 drives to the FlexRaid array.

Usage.

I use the storage for movies and series, i have media players around the house that access it.

Its also for backing up my computers.

Backup.

All the arrays are backed up to LiveDrive, this is a online cloud backup storage service (i have 100/100 Mbps connection)

Photos/ Screenshots.

img0049ch.jpg

img0047oa.jpg

screenshot2jb.png

As you can see, the old raid 5 array is still active (disks D, F, G, I, R and S) these will be gone soon and ill have a 26TB V drive

screenshot1jj.png

A quick overview of the drives from within FlexRaid

getting windows server cheap is easy, just get an email ending in .edu and they give it to you on dreamspark, i picked up 2k8, 2k8r2, and 2k12 all free (also don't even have access to the email anymore - good thing uni forwards all my email).

im sorry if im a little off-topic, but isnt grean drives a bit risky to run in a server? I tried using value/grean drives once in my main system that was on most of the time and they both died about 6 months in. But i see alot suing green drives?

(Comming soon)

Been using greens on the trot for 2 years now. No issues whatsoever.

With unRAID I run a preclear script before adding them to the production array. This script reads and writes zeros to the entire drive and I tend to run it a few times on each drive just to be sure it's a good one.

Generally speaking if a drive doesn't die soon after you get it, it should run for a long time.

I also think it's good practice not to buy a lot of drives at the same time and from the same supplier as this only multiplies your chances of getting a dud drive.

My system may be a different use case from yours. I don't write to mine all that often and the drives spin down when not in use so this could be why I haven't had any issues.

I will say though that if I need to put any extra storage in at any point in the future I'll probably go with WD Reds next time. For now I have about 1TB free which should keep my going for a while as well as a good spring clean deleting session of old crap that's no longer watched/used.

with conventional raid5 the new green drive can give bad sector error, EADS are fine but anything newer may give problems.

So I don't have anything as crazy as the rest of you (yet), I just have 4x3tb WD red's in RAID 6 off of an lsi 9260-4. I'd like to store all my movies on it, but how exactly do you rip blue-rays and dvd movies onto a drive? I have a blue-ray r/w drive, but I haven't been able to find a good utility to rip movies. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Check out SlySoft AnyDVD HD: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html and LifeHacker's guide here: http://lifehacker.com/5559007/the-hassle+free-guide-to-ripping-your-blu+ray-collection

This is what I use and it circumvents the copy protection on the disc (not strictly legal, but you do have the disc and it's better than downloading the movie illegally) as well as some other nice features.

Using this software alone will allow you to create a bit-for-bit copy of the Bluray or DVD disc as an ISO image, so for Bluray it will be rather large (+/- 30GB) You can then mount this ISO image as if it were a real disc in something like the free SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive.

If you don't want to rip the full Bluray to ISO you can use MakeMKV which will put the movie only (no menus/extras/extra audio tracks if you don't want) into a .mkv container. This will bring the size down a little but it will still be quite big but a bit more manageable. This also takes care of getting around the encryption and copy protection.

If you want to go an extra step further you can use something like Handbrake to re-encode the movie still at 1080P but at a lower bitrate to decrease filesize even further but still retain a level of quality and detail that the HD format provides. This will also allow you to pick and choose which audio tracks to passthrough (not convert) to the end result. Handbrake will also rip straight from standard DVDs (movie only) to .mp4/.mkv if you also have VLC installed (I believe HB uses VLC to get around the DVD's encryption)

Are you sure you can make a quick picture, it really doesn't matter what your cable management is like :)

When you post pics ill put you in the list at 13TB (6x3tb raid 6=12tb and 1tb for the mirror)

This is my baby, it's still a work in progress but it's getting there.

I also have 2x 3 bay Icy Box backplanes in the front to hold my drives.

No pics yet, maybe after my next upgrade!

Any luck this time?

I'm noticing a trend of AMD being used in most of these systems, Why is that so? I mean i love AMD but intel has better low power CPU's like the Core i5-2500T · Core i5-2390T · Core i3-2100T.

i was a lot cheaper :), though its probably cheaper to go for intel and save power cost that way.

The amd also comes out of my previous build, i might upgrade to a more efficient intel board later on.

The single core Sempron 140 in my build cost me £25 GBP / $40 USD which was super cheap and it performs perfectly well, especially in something that mostly only needs to serve files/calculate parity data.

As a side note I recently got an iPad Mini and started playing around with Plex and transcoding and the CPU seemed to struggle with higher bitrate/resolution stuff so I had a look online and found out that my motherboard could unlock the 2nd core on the CPU which was locked as part of the binning process so I got a dual core CPU for basically no money! I had concerns over stability but it's been running fine for weeks now :)
