Can anyone explain how parity in RAID works to me?

I don't understand how parity would work in say, a RAID 5 array with multiple drives. Wouldn't the parity space given need to replace more data than in the space it's in? I don't get how it could replace more than the amount of storage allocated to parity.

Here you go. :)

Basically a parity bit is stored for data and then parity is stripped among all the drives for performance issues. If one disk is lost, data can be "rebuilt" using the parity stored on all the other drives. Caveat. Lose two drives and everything is gone. That is why having a hot (or cold) spare is advised. One of those things we just "trust" that it works. But this article really goes into the nitty gritty if you are interested, talking about XOR and all those calculations...
