Looking for some advice

Khempel

Just did a new pc build, haven't done one in around 20 years. Happy with it, but can't for the life of me get my hands on an rtx 3080. So, I am in need of a gpu until I can find one, looking for a recommendation.

You're not giving any details here. What system have you built? If you're using an Intel CPU with an integrated GPU you can  use that until your 3080 arrives. If you want to play games though you'll need a DGPU. What resolution are you playing at? What framerates are you looking for? Do you have a budget for your "fill-in GPU"?

Ada is worse than Ampere which is worse than Fermi, change my mind.

Sorry, should have included. I am using an intel 10980xe, evga x299 ftwk mobo, corsair vengeance 32gb ram and an odyssey g9 monitor. No specific aim for fast at the moment because I mostly want to get up and running, haven't done computer games in quite some time. Budget around 300-500, though the lower end of that would be desirable if the rumors are true about December with nvidia

Buying any capable GPU at this point seems like a waste of money. The new cards are hard to get indeed and probably won't be easy to get for few more  months. It's worst launch ever, but eventually you'll be able to get one. You just happened to build a new PC during this frustrating time. If you must get something to keep you going meantime, the only sensible solution seems to get something used.

Honestly I'd get a second hand 1080Ti. It's enough to get you going and play some games but not expensive enough to where it's a waste of money. You'd be able to get at least 60% of the money back when you sell it after your 3080 arrives so in the and you'd have spent like 100$ for the ability to play for a few months.

Both those make a lot of sense, thanks!

With that monitor that you have it's hard to go with anything below a 1080Ti as it requires quite a capable GPU. You'd at least be able to run some games at medium settings and decent fps at the G9s resolution. I would not recommend spending money for a new 2080 Super as it will have terrible resale value once the 3070 and 3060 become widely available.
