Difference between Program Mode and auto mode on a dslr?

Wut's the difference between program mode and auto mode... Also when i increase the aperture of the dslr... an asterisk appears in front of P?

Auto is auto. Program allows you to shift aperture and shutter time. Changes to one will be balanced out in the other.
