Help Setting Up RAID 0

rx590overclocker

I just ordered my second 500gb sata ssd in the mail.  I am hoping to set up Raid 0, but I have no idea how.  I am also not sure whether to use the AMD Driver, or the Gigabyte Driver for my board.  Do I need to format the one drive in any special way before I set up RAID 0?

My build

Ryzen 5 2600 @3.95ghz

Cryorig M9a

Gigabyte x470 Ultra Gaming

Gigabyte RX 590 @1720mhz

2x8 Corsair LPX Vengeance 2933

ASUS Wireless card

EVGA 650GQ

WD Blue SATA SSD 500GB

Windows 10 storage spaces should do the trick for you. Hit your Windows key or click on the Windows icon on the bottom left of your screen and type "storage spaces", (no quotes). You should get a dialog box pop up for Storage Spaces. Click on "Create a new pool and storage space" and the dialog will walk you through how to set up your hard drives.

Let us know how it works out for you.

does that basically set up raid 0, and then reinstall windows onto it.

Just install the hard drive and use storage spaces to add the drive to your drive pool. No need to reinstall. Usually the RAID on consumer motherboards is what's called "soft RAID". Unfortunately, the soft RAID that offered on consumer boards tends to be problematic and inferior to using even a cheap RAID card, (cheap as in $100 USD or more!). Under Linux you can use mdadm, which gives you a very fast RAID array.

So your best bet is Storage Spaces. It will simply add the new drive to your existing storage space without needing to reinstall. They way my rig is currently set up is I have a 128gb SSD for my Windows 10 and 2 x's 1tb SATA drives for storage. Storage spaces took the 2 x's 1tb's abd merged them into a single 2tb device. The danger, of course, is if one of the drives fails, then my data is written across two drives, so data recovery can be a problem.

But of course you do proper backups, so this won't be a problem for you, right? ;)

I think the raid on my x470 ultra gaming board might be decent.  The motherboard says that is supports raid 0, I was reading that most decent motherboards support hard raid.  Here is the specs on my motherboard.

I went through the Gigabyte link that you provided and it only has a vague reference that it supports RAID 1, 0 and 10. The review sites that I checked out don't really mention RAID. However, checking the driver page on the Gigabyte website shows there is a need to pre-install the RAID drivers before installing Windows:

https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/X470-AORUS-ULTRA-GAMING-rev-10/support#support-dl-driver-sataraidahci

Usually this is because you have soft RAID. Not saying that it's bad, but it's not the same as hardware RAID. If your willing to do a clean install of Windows, I would recommend that you set up your drives in the BIOS and reinstall Windows 10, (IMO, you should reinstall Windows about every 6 months), making sure that you have the SATA RAID drivers on a separate USB drive. You will need to press F6 during installation to pre-install the RAID drivers.

BTW, nice motherboard! :)

(chuckle) Yeah, you, me and about 90% of the people on this forum I would imagine!

Ah, to be able to afford the gear that we truly want as opposed to what we can afford!

hahahahaha :)

I just have to wait 40 years for that.  I'll just get good grades in the mean time, join the air force, rake in that money, and get the 2080S, and that ryzen 9

I retired from the USAF a few years back, it's a good choice, but be sure to choose a career field that can be used in the civilian world, jet mechanic, diesel engine mechanic or something in the medical profession. If you choose combat arms like I did, (yes, the USAF does have ground combat forces), you will find yourself stuck in the military for 22 years because there is no need for ground combat specialist in the civilian world.

Good choice! It's a great field to get into and having someone else pay for your education is an even better choice!
