My First Rig - Iso replacements.

I dropped down to a 450w PSU.

Still using 2x8gb 3200 G Skill Ripsaw.

Am I headed in the right direction?

Prices and suppliers probably won't be right, but these are the parts.

The power supply and 2x8gb ram are unavailable. I see items with similar numbers, but if they're compatible is beyond me. I have the rest loaded into shopping carts and waiting to go. Here's the build someone helped me with. Pretty excited about this whole thing.

That's a solid build, note that you can get Windows 10 for under 10$, I got mine for 7€ from amazon.fr.

If you're not in a hurry, wait for Black Friday.

Do you really need an optical drive?

Swap for crucial P1 or intel 660p if they cost roughly the same or less.  Tho not a super neccesary change.

Any ramkit of 2*8gb 3000mhz or higher at cl16/cl15/cl14 id fine.

When it comes to PSUs.

Look at the MWE Gold 550w, bitfenix formula gold 550w, cx550, TX550m or a couple of others if those arent avavible.

@Plouffe

I see the one you're talking about. Does it work the same as the English version? Able to change languages on it?

@dizmo

I've thought about waiting for the holiday sales to kick off. I wasn't sure if any of the components would make it onto the sale list. I'd rather have an optical drive and not need it than need it and not have it, but I see where you're coming from. I wanted to cut it out, too.

All points noted. I'll be looking for a psu and RAM replacements shortly. The partpicker said I might have to update the BIOS, too. I have no idea how that would work.

You can buy it from ebay.com for you. I just checked and the Windows 10 64bit pro is at 4.50$. Also the reviews from the seller are good.

Upgrading the OP motherboard BIOS requires that it have a working cpu installed. If the motherboard was manufactured after May 2019 it likely shipped with a BIOS that supports the cpu. This should be verified with the merchant before purchase. See https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-100 for more options.

I would suggest getting a better motherboard. ASRock B450M PRO4

A 450W psu is more than sufficient for the build. The CX450M would be a good choice and is widely available. Corsair CXM (2015) 450 W

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200

It may come with the correct Bios if the board is new enough, otherwise do it at a local store or order a bootkit from AMD.

Or get a Max board from MSI that has a VRM heatsink

Suggestions on a post-May 2019 board? The less hassle for me means less explaining this wonderful group has to do. 😂

I've swapped to your suggested psu.

The black 2x8gb 3200 is back ordered on Amazon and $122. The red 2x8 3200 is available for $77. Is there a performance difference or is it purely cosmetic?

Cx450m is not the same as the cx450. Would aim for a cx550 if i was you.

Those kits you are looking at are fairly expencive

Cant you order from newegg?

And as i suggested, a Max branded board from MSI with a VRM heatsink. Like the Mortar Max or Tomahawk Max.

@GoldenLag I will look into the cx550.

I have to get my 1660ti(it is in my cart, not sure on exact name) and case from Newegg.

I'm trying my best to piece this together. Lots of options for a beginner. Thanks for the help so far.

I just really can't see when you'd ever need one. If anything, it just severely limits your case choice putting one in.

I'd just leave it out. If you need one on the future, go pick up a USB one.

Don't do Black Friday shopping wrong; you don't pick a parts list and then see what goes on sale. You go see what's on sale and make a build from that.

I don't know your budget so suggesting a better motherboard is difficult. MSI B450M GAMING PLUS would be suitable. It has a BIOS Flash button that enables BIOS updating without a cpu installed.

For G.Skill memory if you go to their website and search for the part number you can access a motherboard QVL.

https://www.amazon.com/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-PC4-25600-3200MHz-F4-3200C16D-16GVKB/dp/B015FXXBW0/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=F4-3200C16D-16GVGB&qid=1570731928&sr=8-1 is a compatible memory kit available from amazon for ~US$77.

My AMD Ryzen 5 3600 has the stealth cooler.

Will be using the G.Skill Ripsaw 2x8gb RAM from Amazon linked by @brob.

I kept the optical drive. Just a preference.

PSU is iffy. I see the wattage, but not sure about the size and my case.

I hope I'm getting close to having it right.

PCPartPicker calculates the maximum power draw of the system at less than 300W. As I indicated previously 450W is more than enough, so 550W could be considered overkill.

The case is mATX and takes an ATX / PS2 psu. The Corsair CXM series conforms to ATX / PS2 standards.

PSU is fine, CXM units are as solid as a goddamn brick wall. I still have my CX450M from my first build, I've ran up to an i5 2400 and 980 Ti (a 250W card, lol) off of it with no issues, and it's still kicking. Doubt the R5 3600 eats more power than the old i5, and the 1660 Ti can pull about 130W when pushed to the absolute max, so in a worst case scenario it's about half the power draw of a 980 Ti.
