Thanks for making the video, pretty convenient that I stumbled upon it during my break.

I've recently switched from working in mobile game dev to studying clinical and neuropsychology. I've been wanting to integrate my background as a dev with some of the research done while at university.

Do you think the Oculus Quest would work efficiently enough as a side project for personal research and development, or should I stick with the traditional VR headsets like the Rift or Vive? Essentially, my plan is to throw together a scene within Unity and project the experience to the player that way.

Thanks for your time.

(I have a pretty limited experience with VR, aside some stuff I've encountered at a couple of GDCs. But the premise of inputting and outputting feedback seems probable with patience... and tears.)

Oculus Quest seems pretty attractive, what with needing no stupid thingamabobs on the ceiling to define the playing-area and with it being completely wireless. If only it used a PC for the graphics instead of some shitty mobile-SoC, then I'd seriously consider getting me one.

Well it's been announced it will be able to use a PC with the November update.

Teh mobile SoC is already capable of giving some nice experiences, even if not the most graphically "wow-ing" ones. If the tethered option turns out good that would make it the best headset IMO. Good mobile untethered experience to play at friends etc, and ability to run the demanding titles using a PC.

  • 4 months later...

About the outside thing, my friend brought his outside to a park and let me try it out and it was awesome. So, it works. Then again, we stayed in the shade when using it, so I'm not sure how well it would hold up if exposed to direct sunlight.
