If I buy the 980 ti, wouldnt it be almost the same as a titan x?

depends what kind of Titan X.

the 980Ti comes pretty close to the Maxwell Titan X, tough the Pascal Titan X runs circles around both of them.

It salso a bit of more specialized hardware which usually has some hardwired pipelines for specialized task like the current ones for deeplearing
