Dual monitors (one 60hz one 144hz) lagging when pulling up video or stream

Kenny427

Hello,
I have one 144hz benq monitor and one old packard bell monitor. The benq is connected by dvi and packard bell by dvi to hdmi.
My problem is when I play CS:GO for example and watch Twitch or YouTube on secondary monitor or if I pull up OBS streaming software on secondary monitor, my 144hz starts lagging and I am suspecting that it turns into 60hz for some reason. I have i9 9900k so the processor should not be the issue.

If I dont have anything or just discord on the secondary monitor then there is no lag at all. If I have obs software on my 144hz screen while streaming then its also fine.

Does anyone have suggestions on how I can fix this? I tried plugging directly into the GPU with both monitors, also tried connecting secondary monitor into MoBo.

Do you have an nvidia gpu?  I have the same issues but it's because of windows and nvidia drivers not aligning and since the refresh rates, resolutions and aspect ratios.  If you had two of the same exact monitor, you probably wouldn't have any issues but I don't see the point in that.  You can make it a little more fluid by changing nvidia settings and making sure your games aren't in fullscreen.  Obs just makes everything lag when you pull it up because it is taxing when you are streaming, so dont forget to minimize it, I don't know how to fix that one.

Try using the PSU Tier List!

So I turn on v-sync ingame (it will show current hz on screen) and it runs from 60 - 144 hz like crazy and its incredibly laggy. I hope anyone can have a fix for this. Im willing to pay if someone can fix this.

Necroing the thread because I need to leave this somewhere. I've got a similar issue, except my second monitor is 1080p 144hz Freesync and it's still choppy as hell if I'm watching streams in Chrome on my second monitor, even if I set both monitors to fixed 1080/144. There are two ways I've found to fix this problem through Chrome: disable Hardware Acceleration and disable VSync.

1. Go to Chrome > Settings > Advanced > System > Use Hardware Acceleration when Available > (toggle off).

That method will resolve the issue, but personally it wasn't a good solution because I, uh, also play Granblue Fantasy, and if I toggle Hardware Acceleration off that browser game turns into a chunky mess.

2. Use --disable-gpu-vsync (chromium argument)

It's better to add this directly to the Chrome shortcut than trying to retype it into cmd.exe every time. Right Click your shortcut > Properties > Target, then add --disable-gpu-vsync to the end of that box (if it's a taskbar pin, right click the taskbar icon, then right click Google Chrome). It looks like it unbricked my choppy video while letting me keep hardware acceleration.

The culprit is Windows 10 DWM forcing VSync on everything windowed, and apparently preventing your GPU from VSyncing two refresh rates "fixes" it. The above method works for web browsers, but I don't think they're good solutions for OBS; there's apparently an argument to disable hardware acceleration in OBS, but that could also make your stream quality die so I dunno.
