2 modems

Getting a new house but it doesn't have wired Ethernet or cat cables. I want to still have wired internet in some places like the basement for media room and gaming but don't want to put the router down there. I want to put the router in a Central point because it is a pretty large mountain home. Is it possible to have two modems, one in the basement and one on the main level? There is cable and DSL in the home. ISP is Xfinity.

If at all possible, run ethernet to the basement. Otherwise, you could put the router in the basement and use a wifi extender in the central part of your home.

Im an Xfinity sub, I will tell you this. Can you have two modems, yes. Can they both be for internet, thats another question. Those running two modems might use one for internet and one for phone service. Xfinity will make you pay for two separate connections most likely, if they even allow this setup. On top of that Cable modems have to run in a certain spec, and adding more splitters to the equation will just cause issues for the signal running to those modems. 

 

If you have coax in all the locations you can look in to moca or if not look in to power line adapters. Moca adapters will use the same coax Xfinity uses. The biggest catch for Moca is its a little more complicated to setup and the adapters are kinda expensive.

Thanks guys. I will look into Moca. Another question: should I plug a large network switch into my router or my router into the switch (and if so how do I port it so that Apple TV can still use airplay)?

Switch goes after the router. As long as everything is connected to that switch or the router directly every thing should communicate.

Ok but wouldn't that affect speed my router only has 5 1 gigabit ports

Well you cant connect it before the router. Your modem should only be providing 1 Public IP. The routers job is to share that 1 Public IP with all the machines on the network. Basically heres how it is, you connect the switch via cat5e or cat6 to the router, between the switch and router you have a 1 Gbps link, can you saturate that link? Sure, but you would have to be transferring a shit load of data. Also consider that if two devices connected to the switch are communicating with each other, then it does not involve the router at all. Now if the router cant handle the level of traffic your throwing at it, then you need a new router.

10 Gigabit and consumer are not used in the same sentence. I think ASUS has one that has like 2 SFP ports on it, but its a shit ton of money. 10 Gbps for the most part has not really hit the consumer sector hard yet. Your probably looking at small business to enterprise grade hardware if you want 10 Gbps.

No. There’s no point. 

 

But, have a look at “MOCA” adapters. It converts Ethernet to Coax cable. 

 

Keep in mind it won’t be as good as just running Ethernet.
