SSD Questions and Your thoughts

Hi good people.

I am planning on building a new PC this year and I am slowly working my way to put all the parts in place.

Since this section of the forums is about Storage I have some questions about it.

I still see that SSD are quite expensive but yes they have come down in price over the years. 

Knowing that they are the storage devices to go to which will make the PC feels snappy I looked into SSD but I would like YOUR opinions about it to help me make good decisions. 

 

What type of SSD would you recommend just for OS?

Basically, I am thinking about having 1 SSD for OS 1 SSD for games and applications I use regularly and 1 HDD maybe for random stuff like pictures and videos.

 

How much room would I need for OS? 120GB? 250GB?

 

For Games and other frequent programs, I was thinking of 500GB or 1TB to be safe.

 

For the HDD to store pictures and videos I was thinking 2TB to 10TB? Or maybe I should get an External Drive? Thoughts on the External Drives?

 

Lots of concerns.

For gaming a 240GB SSD for OS with HDD for progs and games works well. There are a few good brands, my fave is Samsung.

Adding SSDs in addition to the OS drive will improve things, but not as noticeably.

You could drop to a 120GB for OS if on a budget.

Would recommend 2TB min for HDD.

External drive is good for backups and cold storage. Not too good for running games off of.

 

I have for example...

500GB NVME for OS. Don't really notice the speed boost over SATA in Windows or gaming. Plus there's 306GB free on it.

1TB SSD. All games with 125GB free.

500GB SSD. All games with 90GB free.

1TB HDD. Games and VRMs. with 177GB free.

4TB HDD. Storage, videos, music, backup, with 1.1TB free.

 

Then there is a NAS with two 3TB HDD in RAID 1 and two external 4TB HDDs for backup and media storage.

 

I make backup images of my OS drives with Windows 7 Backup and Restore and store them in four places.

I also have my music backed up in three places.

I lost all my 1s and 0s a couple of times due to HDD failures before I went redundant.

500GB to 1TB SSDs are better value than smaller ones (in price per GB), so don't split drives for 2 uses unless you're buying these big SSDs. Otherwise the same large capacity SSD with 2 partitions, one for OS and the other for something else.

When you partition a SSD does it act as if I have 2 SSD in 1?

Also what do you think about 10TB HDD?

It's more like 1 SSD with 2 separate folders. Unlike using folders though, you can safely wipe one of the partitions with no effect on the other. Useful when cleaning malware.

 

As for 10TB HDD, that's only for big media servers like LTT has imo. I'd rather buy multiple 3-4TB HDDs because they offer higher GB per $.

agree, really no big difference in OS, 

Ryzen with nvme(sx8200) vs sata III 3gb non-cached ssd (BX500)

Lol you probably do not need a 20tb drive. Id go with the 240gb for the os, a 1tb seagate firecuda for games, and 2 tb for mass storage.
