I would like a PC for him that just works. No trouble shooting ever. I do not mind helping him with the assembly of the computer, but we haven't decided whether we want a prebuild or will build the computer ourselves. He is currently using a PS4 and he does not need any peripherals. He currently has a small tv but he is planning to upgrade to a gaming monitor - 165Hz 1080p (16:9) in the future. He wants to buy the pc sometime soon. OK, I am an AS Cambridge student I want to take computer science. I love technology, Learned to code, currently going through cyber security courses, and I even watch tech-related stuff on YouTube as entertainment. All in all, technology is my passion and what my career is 100% going to be based upon. But my parents are forcing me to take chemistry and I would rather study anything else than this extremely dull and unnecessary subject, I can't even go into dept as to how much I personally hate chemistry. My Guardian is saying that you can take computer science as an extra subject. So what happened my mother's brother or my uncle, said that don't take computer science now. He said to take it at university. And when my Guardian got to know. he said I made a terrible mistake. (he is also a computer engineer, and knows I have a lot of passion and interest in information technology, software, and hardware). My counselor said that I need to check specific universities to see if chemistry is necessary for computer engineering. I have an interest in hard and software both. (computer engineering includes both of them). But I prefer software more. My Guardian is also saying you need to do an engineering field he says Computer Science has no scope. I am surprised. But anyways, the main I did was that I told my Uncle about what the counselor said. He said so it might mean that for some universities you might need chemistry. He is a mechanical engineer and is not in the Computer Engineering field. And that was my biggest mistake….., I manually didnt check the universities in my country, and the main criteria. Is Physics, Maths, and Computer Science. but if you take chemistry as a secondary you can apply for it. The problem is, why on God's Earth would I waste my energy in time on a subject I absolutely hate. If I clearly have the option to pursue my goals the way I want to? I don’t know why I agreed to his suggestion that some universities might need chemistry. None do, only Harvard and Oxford need it, I even tried to explain that 70% to 80% of the students who have same passions as me Took Computer Science instead of chemistry. And seriously I am so angry as to how my Uncle is interfering and almost ruining my career. And my mother now is also forcing me to take computer science. I actually took some online tuition classes from my Uncle, and he is funding for extra home tuition for all of my subjects. That is why he is trying to help me out, in which he is clearly failing. I also have some interest in robotics, and my Guardian said. For that you need chemistry. Like if you take chemistry, you can go into both fields and explore. Even though all of my my Father and my Guardian is from my father's Family all their brothers are in IT and software engineer for some stupid reason my Guardian is saying me to go and "atleast try Engineering Field, who knows if you like it" The only Engineer is my Grandfather, and even my father went through this problem when he was my age. He did try as my grandfather said . After trying it for a semester or two (not sure how long) he said "I don't like! it is too difficult for me.". Look my father's money is limited also, I can't also afford to waste money on a field I already know I will not like. My own Father went through this switched to IT and made a successful family. And because of personal family and health issues already my 1 year got wasted. I can't afford to waste more years; on something I will hate in the end. It is a waste of time and money, I need to get through university and to get highly paid Job Asap , to maintain my Fathers wealth. Not waste it... I told my Principle the situation, and she talked called my Uncle, unfortunetly he didn’t attend, (its summer vacation, should I contact her again to talk to him in whatsapp? I have less time left). So instead I said her to talk to my Guardian, and told him that “Your son is week in chemistry and he is finding it tough, its high school chemistry which is even more tough and he will not be able to do it.. You can talk to him in front of me” My Gaurdian me, so what do you want to do in future? I said I want to peruse computer science. You wont be able to go in Computer Engineering, you will only be able to go in Computer Science. (At that time I didn’t check my university criteria from my country.) My guardian is forcing me to do University in my country, they do have some very good education insitituions. But I want to go abroad. My guardian said that you would be better off doing Masters abroad but at least do bachelors in your country, as outside is very expensive and you will have to live alone. My fathers friend lives in America, and my Mothers sister in UK. And my Fathers eldest brother live in Canada Though I haven’t research I know Malaysia is good, has the same degree level of Canada. My mother also motivates me to go abroad as I want to, but long story short. My Guardian left his job and career to take care of me. He was happy living in a rich country. But still left everything for me, as he was very close to my Father. And will leave till I get a stable and have a highly paid Job and a family. So he also said “If you will go abroad, then why did I leave everything” in like a worrying way. He genuinely cares about me helped me out in extremely hard times and we had so many happy memories. But perhaps he can take care of my sisters? I won’t live their forever, I can come back for him. But If I started to like living abroad, he himself lived in UK I could go with him there, and he will be with me. I even told my coordinator the situation even though she gets a little angry easily, though she already somewhat knew as she manages my day to day subject related and academic problem. But God… she is the real hero… My Mom on her way with me to the bank with the receipt for registering three A level subjects, with chemistry instead of computer science. I called my coordinator and requested her to talk to my mother, She said “Its fine, he has home tuition, so he can teach him chemistry” and my coordinator said “How can a person teach all three different subjects?” and that was true, the tutor could barely give me time for each subject, and me being weak in chemistry. I wasn’t even passing my school exams. But sadly my mother hesitated I will personally teach him, and then gave the money for registration. I was just confused as to what I can do in this situation. But as exams were drawing near. My coordinator physically called my mother. They had a fight and threatened that she will kick me out of the collage, if he doesn’t get good grades in maths and physics and ask communicated with Cambridge and withdrawed my registration for Chemistry. Now the problem is this, my tutor is steal teaching me chemistry for October November (I gave AS Physics only in MayJune as my preparation for others wasn’t good). And they still haven’t registered for October November before they register for chemistry again. Would should I do? I still attended computer science classes but for 1 month I didn’t (and left out a lot of chapters, in 1 month they covered so much) My guardian once said that he will talk to my tutor to teach computer science. I will try my best to learn from youtube and stuff, practice pastpapers. My best friend gave me a brilliant suggestion to simply try your best to convince your family to focus on computer science and later give chemistry as a extra subject. Instead of vise-versa. So what is the best MEDIA TYPE to store for long term that is still fast but very very safe? I realize everything can crash but safe and long term. HDD? SSD? Flash drives USB? So, after some deliberation, generosity and general Dutch cheapness... I managed to build my brother in law a PC from mostly used parts and a beautiful budget case I found. Meet the Ginga Ninja. Yes, there is no real orange or even red... he's a redhead. Make fun of it all the time Its not a monster among monsters... but he mostly plays LoL (if it wasn't obvious) and WoW... plus Indy Diablo/Daggerfall etc. So this should be plenty even if he wants to stretch his legs on the new stuff. Everything was bought used or cheap... because frankly... I am cheap lol. parts list; i5-6400, MSI SLI plus Z170, Scythe Big Shruiken Rev B, 16GB Team Dark DDR4-2400, Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X, 500GB Random Seagate HDD, Xigmatek Centauro 600W 80+B PSU and the ️ of the show... the Xigmatek Eden ATX case. Completed build log PCPP All in all this was about $300-400 CAD out of pocket. So he has wonderful performance for under half the cost of new. I shared my steam library with my friend yesterday so he could try out Rainbow Six siege for a few hours before he buys it. He doesn't have enough money to purchase the full edition, so he plans on purchasing the starter edition. I was wondering, since I believe your Rainbow six siege data is managed by Uplay rather than Steam, if he plays the game and unlocks some operators after making an account on the shared full version, and then purchases the starter edition, if it will save all of his unlocked operators and maybe even keep the full version's unlocking system. What do you guys think?

Heysan To Yall here from Denmark I have been watching a bunch of your video's on how to get a good NAS/Server/Cloud Solution. And comming from a home that burned down in 2006, Im sort of getting to a point, where data security and backup is becomming essential. I have approx 15 TB of data I need secured at this time. So Im looking for a total solution that allows me to do the following: - Work from my home laptop localy, which auto or manual backs up to 2 locations. 1 local server fx my old Synology DS414 or something new... (it currently has 4 x 4tb disks, raided in synologys ovn raid setup) 1 cloud server (currently Dropbox, but space is far from whats needed). Would like something with cheap backup space for 40 TB. Have been looking at something like crashplan which currently has no limit. And the one device could be my synology server or which ever new device we build Both must be secured or even encrypted, so I dont loose all to identity theft or hackers!!!! I have seen multible attacks on the synology server, once it goes online, which kind of scares me. Most seem to originate from China or india, but could be masked IP adress. - Filetypes or folders I need to access remotely and have backup of: Documents (i write a lot), Videos from training and coaching sessions, My digital audio library, Digitised DVD's, Workfiles like powerpoints etc, Software install files, game install files and maybe a steam and origin library (dont play much, so not essential), backup files from acronis, Our life in film photo and video library (note that all events have a seperate folder/tree struckture, which I need to keep) - Option to remove the local copy, but still have the 2 backups (to free up local space on phone or laptop for other new stuff) - Account management (username and password/single signon) for Direct and remote access from any device android, windows, browser or ios based - Content streamable to any device. Fx via app? - The Local server can be remote booted and turned off to save power, and keep harddrives working for longer. (this server will normaly only be on a few times pr month, when emptiyng phones for pictures or when access to files are needed) - Good pictureviewer. Fx Synology has a photostation, that allows to view photos. I cant however get it to work with my filestructure, and I want to be able to allow access to specific pictures and videos from that tree, to certain family member groups, and keep the rest private. Rights will be selected upon upload. So my usecase scenarios i want to cover: 1. A hacker takes control of one of our 3 computers, because we clicked one of the clickbaits. We flush the device, and puts the latest acronis image on the device to completely restore all. 2. Latest version of the acronis backup was contaminated and system is taken over again or infected. We flush device and revert to one of the previous images. (normaly I keep a max of 3, but I was told there is such software that only backups 1 original image, and then adds changes to the next backups. Can acronis do this, or is there another? 3. We take a picture or video. Once on wifi, the files are auto synced to server. My only issue here is how to sync into my file structure. Folder is called "2019 08 14 - Event name" or "2019 08 14-23 - Event Period name" 4. One of the phones is full, and we are not shure all pictures have been synced to server. I want to see all files individual syncstatus like fx dropbox shows. Then I chose remove from this device only. Pictures are now safe on the server and in the cloud backup (after backupplan has been completed) 5. One of the images is a good one, i want to share with "family member group". We click picture from any device, and select share with... and then select the group. Group can now se that picture and only that one, as well as the other individual selected pictures or videos. 6. Family Member group log on to app/cloud/other and can now se/download, maybe even comment each picture. They can also send them to a photoframe, that slideshows all shared pictures from all familiy members. 7. Other family members like our new solution, and wants to use our setup for their files. We create a useraccount and a folder just for them and admin. They can now also share with the same family member group. Or maybe even connect their own device like apples icloud folder for family or similar. They might also want to backup documents or other stuff. But this is only bonus feature, as most of this will need some sort of privacy filter. 8. I do a training/coaching session and safes pictures, audio or event videos from the session on my laptop. Folder autosyncs to server, and I now select share with trainee/coachee. They now have useraccount which allows access to those files. I dont want server to stay running, so a temp storage place like dropbox, might be a good way to have a temporary storage place. 9. We want to watch a movie. We start the server remotely via app or other? We select movie and play to chromecast, which is attached to home media center. 10. We have sonos in the house and have yousee music service attached. But a number or playlist is not possible to play, as yousee dont have all music in the world, but we have it on cd. We start server, move numbers to fx dropbox playlist folder, which sonos can access. Then we play music like always. 11. Same as before, but this time we are at a party, where I want to share some god video or music number. I remote boot the server and select number, then streams online to whichever system is working there. Either via my phone to jackstick or to chromecast. 12. Its time for the weekly backup. Server auto boots, and syncs the local databackup files. Server shuts off automaticly once backup is complete. It also syncronise all photos/videos/docs etc, from all devices added to the storage. Before shutdown, data is send to cloudservice backup service as well. 13. A picture was in the wrong folder. Its moved on any device to the right folder, and this change is autosynced, as soon as the server goes online again. 14. Server hardware fails. CPU fx. Part is replaced or disks moved to new server setup. Settings are also backed up, so even though the new server might have better options, old settings can still be reused. 14.1 Disk fails. Alert is send via email or sms, once home, I replace damaged disk, and server initialise the new disk and recreates the raid volume. In case multible disks fail, they are also changed, and backup from cloud is flashed onto the new array. 15. I want to share just one or a few large files. A share link is send via email, which grants read right to that file alone. Again a service like dropbox could work for this, however space in the dropbox is very expensive to expand beyond 1 tb. 16. Electric bill is to high this month. Backupplan is changed to once pr 14 days. just to save a little extra. 17. Once a year al the old boys come together for a LAN party. Server is booted and all game libraries can now be shared by others. 18. Cloud is hacked/deleted/bombed by terrorists or other. Local server is attached to new backup service, and new deal is made for backup. There are probably many more scenarios I want to cover. However my biggest concern is keeping the monthly cost down. - Electric bill - New disks every 3 years (which is the normal runtime for a servergrade harddrive i supose) is to much. Must last longer. Thus not needed to be on all the time. - Cloud service bill must be low. 10$ pr month is okay, but more than that will screw this private server backup initiative up. Today i use - Free dropbox with 12 gb space for file sync. (have been getting 50GB promocodes with new phones, but stil space runs out to fast) - 6 local harddrives attached to usb hub, powered on one every 14 days, to create a manual backup - Synology server has been taken offline. File management and transfer speeds are anoyingly slow and does not work like windows file explorer. Copy paste fx, or search for dublicates is a nightmare. Much easier from the 6 local harddrives. - 1x 4 tb external harddrive has the second backup of all family photos and most important documents. All other data, only has one copy on the 6 harddrives, unless copied to one of the laptops. - We have a private group chat on facebook for sharing the few family photos. (i hate this solution, as I dont know what facebook does with our photos, and takes years If you want to go back more than a few weeks) This is just for my family and I as a private solution. Training/coaching sessions is a hobby, which I dont charge for, as I have a fulltime job selling patrolingsystem to manned guarding industry. I do keep my workfiles in dropbox for easy sync, but i am very worried dropbox is not safe enough. Not even for private photos. I really hope to get some good feedback on how to create such a solution in the best cheapest way possible, maybee even se a comparisson chart, comparing lifecycle vs cost for always online server, vs a server that turns off, for all costs like disks needed, electric bill, hardware failiure after multible years of running, hardware upgrades etc. Hope this might also inspire a god video on the subject "Family shared photo and video NAS + Backup cloud service" Thanks for reading Benjamin K. Hello guys, I haven’t been active in forums much, but now wanna use this as a way of looking for advice. Please excuse any noob-ish mistakes. initial situation: - 3 users in 3 different locations .... that’s why web access will be a major factor - my connection (where the server will be located) : 500mbit/s down - 50mbit/s up - other users: about 100mbit/s down - 10-20mbit/s up - every user should be able to upload images which preferably can be organized in some kind of program and can also all be accessed by everyone - every user should also be able to use the server as a backup for different PCs (both Windows and Mac) and use it as general file sharing - I do have experience in building desktop PCs and have a generally good knowledge of hardware - I don’t have old hardware laying around to reuse - budget preferably around the 500€ range or less, but possibly more if necessary and worth it - noise and power efficiency are a concern Questions: Self build or get something pre build like a Synology “xyz” I’m thinking self build can save me money, it’ll be fun cause I like tech and it can be adapted to my purpose better and can be expanded better. - is what I am looking for possible to achieve? - How much storage would make sense? For how much more does one plan? - what about zfs and raid? - I know raid isn’t a backup, so how would I realize a backup for the server data itsself? Or rather when is another level of backup necessary? - what kind of OS would be used? I heard of plenty of options like freenas, Ubuntu, windows server, unraid...... Do different OSs affect power consumption and CPU requirements significantly or all the all kinda equal? - How does one choose/decide on an OS? - server or consumer hardware? How does one estimate the ram needs of a server in general? - do I need a gpu/apu? Or rather how do the GUIs of the different OSs work? - Do I need to worry about security when thinking about web access and so on? - the connection of the users and me are sufficient once the biggest chunks of data have been loaded onto the server from what I can tell. Incremental PC backups should and occasional photo uploads shouldn’t be too slow. - read and write speeds won’t need to be top of the line, since over the web the connections petty much cap out around 6,25 mb/s right? so I would only need to consider my local network speed which is 1 Gbit/s if any I guess. - when does an ssd cache make sense? - I read a lot about VMs. What can be VMs be used for? When does using one make sense? How much more CPU and RAM would implementing VMs require? - what other server applications are most common and useful for private use? Sorry for the wall of text. Hello all, I'm currently in a specific situation and would like some advice on the matter. The family computer at my parent's house is ancient so I agreed to help and build them a new one. They wanted a good pc that would't cost anything. My sibling also wanted to be able to do some gaming on it. I purchased an old Dell Optiplex on Ebay with an I7 3770 as a base for the build. I bought a new Seasonic 500w PSU, some used ram, and a used RX 580 to add. I did get it working for about a week before the motherboard started having problems. I've already put about 400 into all of these parts and dont want to put much more out. Hey guys, My dad has been bugging me to do some research on a good laptop that is similar to my Dell E5450 i5 5300U Laptop. What modern laptop is available that is simple for him to use, has some decent features, and is light for him to handle. Being as he had 2 strokes and heart surgery a few years ago, I was looking for something good and he really likes my Dell E5450. For the past few weeks, my sister had been asking me random questions about Bluetooth and whether my computer supported it. She had also asked me why I don't use wireless headphones. I explained to her that it does make much sense considering I'm at my desk. The earpads on my Beyerdyamics need replacing. They're a bit grungy now that I've used them most days for a couple years now. I told her this. Christmas rolls around and she got me some Bluetooth headphones and USB receiver, which would be fine if I had a mobile phone. Using them, of course, means not being able to use my amplifier, which I got in part for accessing the volume easier. All of the controls for volume control and whatnot are built into the headphones. I have fine-motor limitations so yeah... What do I do here? ?

My grandfather is in his mid 80's, and he never carries his current *cellphone* The Samsung T669 Gravity T : This phone is ancient, and he said "If I had one of the phones like you lot, with the chess, and the pokeMAN, I would carry it like you want me to." It needs to be cheap, like 60$ is my upper limit, as he is not the fastest to react and can very easily get it stolen/lose it. It needs to run Android 4 or Newer. It needs to be durable. (Or Have case options) It needs to have battery life for at least a day or two at Idle. It needs to be compatible with T-Mobile bands (In the USA) It needs to be within the size area of around 4-5'" , No phablets. Media features are simply unneeded, as the man could honestly care less about most of that stuff, at the most i'll toss a gigabyte or two of Johnny cash CDs and stuff on it Yes, we own the CDs. My Aunt and Uncle are looking for a laptop to do work on. They are willing to spend up to $1000. I'm not really versed in laptops. They're not too old but won't understand a lot of the newer things like usb type-c. So I have been throwing the idea of creating a Movie Cinema Server for our home. The idea kinda got resparked when Linus put that video for Plex up last week. I recently got a promotion so money became less of an issue u till I looked up the average size of a DVD file. Here's the situation. You know thoughs huge ass binders you can get at Wal-Mart to sleeve all your DVD & Blu-ray discs in? We have 4 of em. Full. I want to take !"ALL OF IT"! and create a Media Server that we can access through Plex anywhere. I consider myself very capable around electronics and building a home computer is fairly straightforward. Last week iv built 4 1 way or another.(Side Note fuck the 24-pin power connector on motherboards. Won't go on, and won't come off. Feel like I'm going to bust it every time. End rant) So iv never built a server before. Iv never built a raid before. Just wanted maybe a little help in the right direction on some up to date information. All and all I'm probably looking at more than 4tb of DVD and Blu-ray.

Dear Awesome People, Looking to pick up components for a new PC for my family computer. I already have 2 computers in the house that are gaming capability, but I need another one to replace my mother's old PC. Looking for an affordable i5 CPU and matching Motherboard and 8gb RAM. Definitely nothing extreme, my only focus is staying cheap since I am not going for high quality performance or anything and also trying to have the system capable of plugging in a GTX 970 (I have an extra laying around) if I ever have my sister use AfterEffects or Photoshop on that PC.
