  1. Summary Issue arrising from an implementation of Signal's (Messaging Application) new proxy, this was intended to be used to circumnavigate restricted state implemented "National Internets", specifically Iran. Members of the Anti-Censorship Community challenged said implementation, stating that it was insecure and exploitable. Moxie (Co-founder of Signal) has very adamantly defended both the removal of github issues and the implementation of the proxy itself. Quotes My thoughts I think this is an interesting view from both sides, Anti-Censorship community members have commonly been quite quiet, so this has clearly riled them up. Signal who have become more and more a positive beacon of security and encryption, but possibly making a large misstep by some poor implementation? Generally an interesting read and look at anti-censorship opinions in the community. Also hi LTT Forum Sources https://github.com/net4people/bbs/issues/63 https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/removal-notice-for-signal-article/
  2. idk why but the consor bot doesn't like my comment He mentioned Star Citizen in the Techlinked video and it took over the news for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqxzE1m2fzg IT'S NOT EVEN IN BETA ITS STILL IN ALPHA. In the time span of Star Citizen being in development Elon Musk announced, built and launched a rocket into space, and not to mention the games macro transactions from ALL the ships you can buy in the store. As of June 2020 the game has over $300 MILLION U.S DOLLARS FROM FUNDING(source: wiki). The closet game that i can think of to having that budget is GTA V from somewhere between $137 million to $265 million(source: Business Insider) and it was in development for about 3 years as opposed to Star Citizen's development which is on going and has been in development since 2010. My prediction for that games relase date is 2025. This comment was posted on; 2021, February, 10th i wanted an exact date on this comment so i can look back on it in 5 years to see if my prediction was right.
  3. Original Source (Vice) Tweet from Google employee Shane Huntley Search for "tank man" on Bing Search for " tiananmen square 1989" on Bing On the 32nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, Bing has censored image results for "tank man" and "tiananmen square 1989". The first person to notice this is none other than a Google employee. Image search results for "tank man" are returned blank, even when searching with SafeSearch off (and from a UK IP address too). Interestingly, both Yahoo and DuckDuckGo are having the same "issue". Apparently the issue is due to "human error", but I'm highly sceptical and believe there are other forces at play. My thoughts It's often discussed that "Big Tech" have too much power over the media and censorship (i.e. a former US president being suspended from social media), but the idea that foreign countries can encroach on these companies and theoretically censor huge parts of history, including the massacre of protesters, is incredibly unnerving. Many of us are incredibly lucky to have the right to a free vote, the freedom of speech and assembly, but we mustn't take these for granted, and that starts with censorship of history.
  4. Hey guys, I have a Youtube channel and have been gaining it off the ground so far. I have noticed some comments I get notified of, however do not make it to the actual video. I go to the moderation tab in the studio and they're not there. I have no way to get to them. Any help on this? Is Youtube censoring my audience? I have no control over this. The comments I get from the bell icon. I click on them, however nothing is noted. Pictures below.
  5. Article from BBC: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-38637003 This was the response in enforcing the Republic Act 9775 or Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009. NTC said that they ordered all ISPs to block porn access in January 14th but it's now the 17th here (UTC +8h) and I still have the access to it even without a VPN. With that said, I get why our government did that. Porn can give children unrealistic expectations when it comes to sex and young children shouldn't be exploited for pornography at all. But, I fear that enforcing this could lead to some other forms of censorship even for the legit ones like activism or might be used against freedom of speech (Article III, Section IV). It's true that parents and officials have the moral responsibility to protect children but I think conservatives in our country will use it out of the context to incite slut shaming and negativity towards sex. The topic of sex education alone is a taboo in most schools here and I fear that this legislation will empower that. Besides, there are ways to get around government censorship and VPN blocking. Some VPN services like TunnelBear and Nord have a feature to defeat VPN blocking. So I'd rather suggest that parents should be more tech savvy than their kids like using Parental Controls on a separate user account and placing the home PC at the living room. Make sure that the kid's user account is a limited and not admin one and for once, sex ed should start from home and not from porn. I think that once kids asked a question about sex, it means that they're ready to know about it like how babies are made because no matter how much we hide porn from our kids, they'll know about it someday from someone. Additional info: Philippines ranked highest in PornHub visits in 2016. So this could be another reason why the government is enacting porn bans on ISPs. UPDATE: Internet Service Providers and wireless carriers who failed to comply will be fined PHP 500,000 to PHP 1,000,000 (USD 10,021 to 20,042.09) for first offense and PHP 1,000,000 to PHP 2,000,000 (USD 40084.18) and revocation of license to operate for second offense. (Source here)
  6. Internet Freedom is one of the most debated topics on...the Internet A new report from Freedom House, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research organization, focuses on Internet Freedoms and Censorships I personally advocate for Internet freedom as I believe it is a right for people to be able to have access to it without being stopped or censored It is interesting to see that there are particular websites being blocked though most of them are social media platforms which are often battlegrounds for opinion Countries like China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Russia are still up to the same censorship laws and rhetoric, in fact they got worse I just hope more countries push for Internet Freedom rather than follow the trend of the aforementioned countries Source: Freedom House
  7. Oh shit ! is that a drone? The government of Ecuador confirmed on Tuesday that it had decided “to temporarily restrict access” to the internet inside its embassy in London, effectively cutting off Julian Assange the editor of Wikileaks, who has lived there since he was granted political asylum in 2012. The action was carried out by state level intervention intentionally to disrupt communications The internet restriction was applied over fears that he was using it to interfere in the US presidential election. Assange later responded through his twitter that they have activated the appropriate contingency plans << Painfully accurate image its a two sided game , there's pretty much more than equal amounts of shit being thrown at each candidates to make the other look less dirty, mind the fact it's a politician vs non-politician thing , but like someone said actual crime doesnt matter , you know the game , basic see-saw distraction , one of e goes down the other one goes up. The statement also reaffirmed the asylum granted to Assange and reiterated its intention “to safeguard his life and physical integrity until he reaches a safe place”. Meaning their primary priority is to well being , maybe they made a temporary restriction to address an essential ongoing trade it's not the photograph with the hand in the cookie jar that matters, it's the one who took the picture , that's the real crookie criminal Wikileaks most recently leaks include emails hacked from the Gmail account of the Clinton campaign chairman, John Podesta, which included partial transcripts of paid speeches Clinton gave to Wall Street bankers after her tenure as secretary of state. At the end of the day it's basic politics , doesn't matter if it's truth or lie, people believe in what they want to believe promises , they will adhere to whoever provides most reasonable answers to their current problems , people use this whole shibangabang to throw in whatever they have to win , whether is Trump supporter or Clinton supporter , we're seeing how aggressive things are turning into, there's a difference between grounded hard evidence vs emotional jolting accusation , what to believe , depends on the persons history of influences , translates into what you see nowadays Russian president responded vaguely to the rumor that Russian influence in the hacking attempt (English subtitled) Mini Transcript : President Vladmir Putin : " In ANY event , we will work with any US leader , whoever that leader is, What are we witnessing? Some hacker published information about the unseemly conduct of Mrs.Clinton's campaign headquarters , supporting one candidate for the party nomination at the expense of the other , Hysterical accusations that this is in Russia's interests , They freak out about it to distract the attention of the American people from the importance of what was published by the hackers , The importance is that public opinion is being manipulated , but nobody talks about it ( US/international media) , Everyone is talking about who did it? , But is it so important who did it? , What is important is the content of this information " isnt it kinda weird mainstream/general media is criticizing wikileaks journalism , the stuff actual media journalism is supposed to do? but that's a thought for you to think through Even a bigger issue is that wiki leaks have had a copy of their encrypted but uncensored database in all it's fury out available for public with a deadmans switch , which in case of his somewhat mysterious death or restriction to access of Julian assange , a decryption key would be released & be made available publicly from multiple sources (this guys probably still alive because of this) , it was reported the switch wasn't pulled due to the delay in access from him online, for the time being & the sensitive data is still encrypted Recently the Russian international journalistic channel RT was restricted from withdrawing funds from British bank accounts, But the British bank has denied reports it closed the UK accounts of RT , assuming it was an indirect pressured response from the political influence connecting tho this, Most probably a response to Email hacking accusations Sources: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/ecuador-cuts-off-internet-access-for-wikileaks-founder-assange/2016/10/18/277281f6-95ac-11e6-9b7c-57290af48a49_story.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/10/19/ecuador-admits-cutting-julian-assanges-internet-access-over-impa/ https://theintercept.com/2016/10/18/ecuador-cuts-internet-access-julian-assange-preserve-neutrality-us-election/ https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/oct/19/wikileaks-ecuador-julian-assange-internet-access http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-37680411 http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/10/wikileaks-ecuador-admits-cutting-assange-internet-161019055948619.html http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/19/world/europe/julian-assange-embassy.html?_r=0 http://gizmodo.com/ecuador-confirms-it-has-cut-off-julian-assanges-interne-1787949101 http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-cyber-wikileaks-idUSKBN12H2E9
  8. In an attempt to stop people under the age of 18 to view pornographic material, the UK government has proposed an ID system for viewing porn online. Each citizen who want to watch porn would get their own ID, which they then have to type in when they want to browse a website which contains porn. There will also be a "great firewall of the UK" which will block websites and attempts to circumvent the ID system. The system will log what porn users view, and the proposal specifies that in order to protect this very sensitive information they will use cryptography (the part of the proposal about how the crypto will work is three sentences long and does not go into any details whatsoever). Anyone who is worried about a potential data leak can rest easy knowing that the proposal outlines such a strong security standard. Before anyone tries to hate on this proposal let me remind you that THIS IS FOR THE CHILDREN! UK politicians are notorious for both being, and protecting pedophiles but let's ignore that for a moment and remember that they just want to protect children. You wouldn't want to harm children, would you? Source: AlecMuffett on Twitter and BoingBoing. Seriously though, this is fucking stupid and scary. The UK government is really trying to turn the UK into Airstrip One.
  9. Looks like tech companies, not just Google are swinging their ban hammers on these alleged "extremists groups". It's basically two articles but instead of splitting them into two threads, I just merged them into one since both Spotify and Squarespace are swinging their trusty ban hammers. This is more of a supplement thread to this existing one by @Implosivetech Source: The Verge; Squarespace says it’s removing ‘a group of sites’ as internet cracks down on hate speech The Verge: Spotify pulls several ‘hate bands’ from its service Obviously this incident in Charlottesville has escalated way to quickly. I tried looking for that song on Spotify entitled "Money, Music and Hate" but it's now gone in both Spotify and iTunes. Well, just as I've said in the similar thread, both Spotify and Squarespace can do this because they are private corporations to begin so the US government can't ask them to pull out any songs or shutdown websites as per the 1st Amendment. I can't really comment on the song because I haven't heard it nor heard about the band. I think with Squarespace, I think they created a gray area on this issue. I have opinions about the SPLC but I'd rather not share it here as per CS but I think whenever SPLC demands to have something removed, it should be decided by a team of employees of diverse political opinions (both left, right and center) rather too hastily because an external group says so. I don't think censorship is the solution. If we look at history, a lot of notions and ideas flourished (both good and bad) because of censorship. I'm a believer in free speech. People are free to think whatever they want in the privacy of their own minds and people are free to believe and disbelieve at any given moment as long as it doesn't spill deleteriously on other people. If it does, I think it's right for tech companies like Google, Spotify, and Squarspace to not only swing their ban hammers but also alert local authorities to put these people behind bars. This reminds me of a great quote from the French historian and philosopher Voltaire (1694-1778): ----------------------------------------- Also, on that regard I've included an article written by Garry Kasparov entitled "Fighting Hate and Saving Speech". I encourage everyone to read it.
  10. Basically, PragerU, a non-profit conservative organization is suing Google for their content being blocked by Youtube in its "Restricted Mode," Citing that it infringes on their freedom of speech from the 1st US amendment. Their videos are also demonetized though to a extent I do not know. The demonetization could simply be missed revenue by having it not show up for the lost viewership. I think this is relevant because Internet censorship is something we should all be extremely interested in and if its happening, should respond to appropriately. 11. The offices of Fundació puntCAT, the people managing the ".cat" TLD have been raided by Spanish police. The company was asked to block all domains that contain any content regarding the upcoming referendum in Catalonia, which they refused to do, resulting in the raid. This is highly unusual, usually censorship is done at the ISP level and not by trying to force the domain registrar to remove domains. Existing domains will most likely not be affected by this raid, because the actual DNS infrastructure is managed by CORE and not Fundació puntCAT. Their CTO has been arrested and charged with "sedition". He is still detained by Spanish police. source: https://www.internetnews.me/2017/09/20/dotcat-registry-offices-raided-spanish-police/
  12. Hot off the press. So no more Twitter and Gmail for both the Chinese people and foreign tourists by next year. Source: Bloomberg One of the ways as far as I know how the Great firewall of China works is by blocking ports used by VPN providers like OpenVPN protocol that often uses UDP port 1194. Another way to block VPN access is through "deep packet inspection". However, some VPN providers where able to circumvent these blocks by the Chinese government like changing ports [here]. Some VPN providers change ports automatically to TCP port 80 which is the typical unencrypted traffic/HTTP only. Turning off this port means turning off the entire internet in a given area. Another port less likely blocked is TCP port 443 which is used by encrypted traffic/HTTPS. Hence, blocking this port would mean no secure shopping or online banking. [see more from here] So if a foreign businessman is using Google services and visits China, he's pretty much screwed since he cannot use a personal VPN to access Gmail and Hangouts. It's a shame that from a country with faster internet than America, URLs from the west are blocked. I just hope this wouldn't turn out like North Korea with only 25 intranet sites. Would the likes of Tunnelbear or PIA be able to get around the new restrictions, I don't know. This post will be updated once personal VPN providers made their comments. [UPDATE] Apparently, there was no VPN ban at all. Source: Nextshark Here's another one: Source: Technode As it turns out, Bloomberg is once again fake news. Even VPN vendor Express VPN confirmed that there is NO ban of personal VPNs in China. Here's a screenshot. From a Chinese news site: China is not putting up a ban on personal VPNs. 13. Thursday in an apology to users, CEO of Reddit Steve Huffman openly admitted to altering comments that were critical of him. He made the admission, where he posts under the username Spez. The "r/pizzagate stuff" Huffman referenced concerns a conspiracy theory about a secret pedophile group, a pizza parlor in the nation's capital, and Hillary Clinton's campaign chief, John Podesta. Reddit banned the "Pizzagate" conspiracy board from the site because of a Reddit policy about posting personal information of others. The move ushered in a wave of criticism against Huffman on Wednesday, and he responded by editing the comments. -ARS TECHNICA Regardless of whether you're on the left, right, or somewhere between, this is not something that I would quickly dismiss. I'm glad that he admitted to wrongdoing but is this kind of action immediately forgivable? If an incident like this can just occur with limited scrutiny, how many other incidents like this go unnoticed and if not unnoticed unpunished? I'm not an avid user of Reddit but for a site that seems to be a champion for freedom of speech, this kind of incident sure does seem bring down the sites integrity. 14. Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later once the likes of Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, etc. started taking political sides in the day to day communications and goings on of the American peoples. Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/18/sen-hawley-bill-would-revoke-cda-section-230-for-large-tech-companies.html As it stands, these companies are considered service provides similar to telephone companies. Basically, I can go on the phone or Youtube or whatever, and talk shit about someone all I want, and the phone company or Youtube can't be held liable for my actions. There is a lot more to this. There is potentially a way for them to retain immunity, provided they can be audited (every 2 years) and confirmed to be actually remaining politically neutral (as they should be). My opinion follows:
  15. So, it would appear that Googles project Dragonfly, (a project to create a censored search engine for use in China) might not be dead, at least according to a group of Google employees who took it upon themselves Warning: Wall of Text ahead. So for those who might have trouble understanding, or simply not know, the Chinese government very much dislikes when people start talking about things like Human Rights, Tiananmen Square, Democracy, etc. In fact talking about these things can land you in prison within China. So the Chinese government decided to simplify the process and get Google to make them a search engine that would simply cover this all up. No doubt that they would block all other search engines (which they probably already are) in favor of this one, via the Great Firewall of China. Eventually, and rather to my surprise, a large number of Google employees decided to protest this, as it is rather morally and ethically questionable, as a result, Google shut the project down, or so everyone was told. But Google executives, including CEO Sundar Pichai, refused both publicly and privately to completely rule out launching the censored search engine in the future. This led a group of concerned employees — who were themselves not directly involved with Dragonfly — to closely monitor the company’s internal systems for information about the project and circulate their findings on an internal messaging list. The employees have been keeping tabs on repositories of code that are stored on Google’s computers, which they say is linked to Dragonfly. The code was created for two smartphone search apps — named Maotai and Longfei — that Google planned to roll out in China for users of Android and iOS mobile devices. The employees identified about 500 changes to the code in December, and more than 400 changes to the code between January and February of this year, which they believe indicates continued development of aspects of Dragonfly. (Since August 2017, the number of code changes has varied between about 150 to 500 each month, one source said.) The employees say there are still some 100 workers allocated to the “cost center” associated with Dragonfly, meaning that the company is maintaining a budget for potential ongoing work on the plan. Source: https://theintercept.com/2019/03/04/google-ongoing-project-dragonfly/ Whew. Sorry for the wall of text. There is a LOT more to this. Please read the original article as I cut out a couple of paragraphs to try and make it fit as best I could. I would weigh in heavily on this topic, but as it approaches that intersection between politics and technology, I will only say that I think Google should absolutely drop the project and destroy any relevant research or code, and that government enforced censorship is, in my opinion, extremely bad.
  16. Source: South China Morning Post HK01 (in Chinese) Personal thought: Not gonna lie but I've been using VPN for YouTube and Facebook whenever I went to China... And there are a lot of people doing so as well. In light of this, people who use VPN in China for whatever reason should be more careful. If you're using Lantern, change to something else. It might have been compromised. (Insert Linus PIA ad here lol)

  18. https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/world-news/russian-official-threatens-to-block-google/articleshow/67059089.cms Russia became obsessed with censoring everything. This spring it tried to block popular messenger Telegram, accidentally banning about 20 million IPs from different service providers including AWS, PSN and many others, but due to built-in proxy telegram survived and became even popular. ( old story: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-telegram-ipaddresses/russia-blocks-google-amazon-ip-addresses-in-bid-to-ban-telegram-idUSKBN1HO1WM or here). Later they unban most of those IP, but oficcially telegram is still in ban(though it works perfectly fine). Now the government tries to force Google to accept Russian rules. Google has been fined 700 000 roubles (10 400$), but they understood that it is too insignificant sum to affect Google's position. Currently it is impossible due to Russian Laws to ban search engines, so they decided to change the laws, so it could affect Google. https://www.ft.com/content/cd06a598-f180-11e8-ae55-df4bf40f9d0d in case someone is interested in Russian source on this topic: https://www.interfax.ru/russia/641915
  19. In an unexpected twist of events, the Dagestan's Ministry of Communications announced a contest to search and report extremist materials, as to popularize it's anti-terrorism hotline, especially among the younger crowd. Residents of the republic need to find suitable posts on the Internet or social networks and send links to the Hotline address. After that, the post will be checked by experts of the National Center for Information Counter-Terrorism and will transmit the information to the prosecutor's office, the FSB or the Ministry of Internal Affairs, depending on the results of the check. Prizes are provided for the “most active users”: the first place is iPhone SE 32 Gb, the second is a Xiaomi Redmi 5 32Gb with the third being a Xiaomi Redmi 4A. Adding to the ridiculousness and unprofessionalism, the name of the Chinese company is written with an error. Personally, I think it's ridiculous. I get the idea of a hotline, and I even though I dislike censorship I can understand trying to police and keep track of extremism content, but this is really not the right way to go about it. You're teaching young people to accuse and fulminate for profit. At least the inquisition offered a %age of the accused's valuables. Now you're supposed to do it for a phone. /s Source tjournal.ru Source 112.rdpress.ru/
  20. I'm not really sure how to do this without injecting my own bias, but I'm going to do my best. Recently, Sargon of Akkad uploaded a video condemning and pointing out the hypocrisy of certain members of the left, when they failed to take any action or have any outrage over Louis Farrakhan comparing "the Jews" to societal Termites. The biggest response by far, was Youtube de-listing his video so that it does not show up on the channel page, even for Sargon himself. As evidenced in his video pointing this out. This is the video in question. As you can see it does not have a thumbnail even though it is supposed to. This is the kind of thing I have talked about in the past on here in regards to censorship by social media companies. This is behavior that should be condemned widely, but here we have someone condemning it, being silenced. Why? Because it's someone they agree with or like? Because it goes against their narrative world view? If you're going to ban hate speech on your platform, that's fine, it's your platform. But when you decide to ban only certain hate speech and not others, that becomes an issue. I would call silencing someone for pointing out and condemning another persons hate speech, advocating that hate speech. Also worth noting that despite this kind of behavior, Twitter has not banned or otherwise punished Louis Farrakhan's account, nor that of many of his followers, despite their blatantly anti-semetic rhetoric. I would ask very politely that we all remain as civil as possible in discussing this. This kind of thing needs to be discussed, and devolving into insults and anger will serve no purpose other than to get the thread locked
  21. Summary The Network fo the Defense of Digital Rights in Mexico (R3D) warns the public that a law has been aproved that would have consequences spanning internet censorship and even reduced freedom of speech online (something worse than the U.S Net Neutrality Act). This law also means that users will not be ale to repair or modify their electronic devices unless they take them direcly to the manufacturer. Small repair shops will be illegal or prone to high fees; only the big manufacturers will be allowed to continue repairs. And if any device has a software lock, for example the 2018 MacBook Pro, it will be illegal to bypass it, and it will require you to go only to apple. This also means that online censorship is getting to dangerous levels, before as it is pointed out in the article below, there have been entire online publication / newspapers taken down for governmental purposes , to cover up corruption, with the excuse of it infringes copyright law even though they were entirely original contetnt. Before government censorship was present but this law will give them the tools to take down any website or article without needing to provide any explanation at all. Quotes My thoughts Saldy to a tech head like myself this means that my small business involving computer building, computer repair, and computer upgradesh shop may now be illegal to maintain. Suddendly most computer markets that offer small phone repair services may go out of business due to this law. Man Louis Rossman would me mad right now. Mexico has just lost an important battle when it comes to right to repair... 24. This has me sorta annoyed. I'm not a big user of reddit but this really shows how low they've gone now and how political they have turned. This frightens me in regards with the traction social media has and it's importance to be an open platform. Like reddit took forever to ban subreddits that promoted jailbait and similar topics but why they decided to censor this I have no idea what so ever for. Is reddit now another crap-platform? What do you thought? I'm not interested in discussing what the news article is about but rather the methods reddit has started to use. What are your thoughts on the new law the EU trys to pass? https://www.change.org/p/european-parliament-stop-the-censorship-machinery-save-the-internet This is a huge problem for anyone uploading memes sharing links etc. They are basically pushing a upload filter over everything that gets posted to detect copyrighted material. Not many big channels or news sites are covering this because of the Football world cup. With this Law sites like wikipedia, reddit, 9gag, etc are at risk and new sites like that couldnt be hosted anymore because of art. 11.
