Hey everyone, I recently moved into a new apartment (rental, so I'm limited to pretty much keeping the same network setup), and was happy to see that they had RJ45 data ports in the wall. Unfortunately, when plugging in ethernet cables, nothing is recognized. I've done a bit of digging and some exploring since then, as I'd really like to get this to work. In the closet, there is some sort of a network panel, which looks like the first image below. I have checked all the jumpers, and made sure that they are jumping the "data" pins, and not "voice" pins. I have done the same with two wall jacks (second picture), and jumped the data pins, which the voice pins are left uncovered (there is white plastic covering the voice pins, but they are not jumped). Finally, I have plugged an ethernet cable from my router into one wall jack, and then tried to plug my computer into a second wall jack (both are jumped to data), but nothing gets picked up.... I have also tested each ethernet cable directly into the router with my laptop, and they work. This is really bugging me, as my modem can only sit in one place in this apartment, and it's not where my desktop is. I'm paying for 300mbps down, but at the moment I need to use a powerline adapter to reach my desktop (cannot have cables running over the floor here) and the fastest speed I'm getting from that is about 45mbps down. On a side note, I've never seen network panels like these before, either in the closet or in the wall jacks. Has anyone else. I also see that there are RJ45 ports labelled J1 - J6 in the closet (first picture). Do these need to go into some sort of switch? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

I recently got a new fiber internet connection but the problem is the only way i can access the internet is by using the Dial-Up option and manually connecting to the internet. Moreover, when I use Dial up my internet becomes about 5 times slower. I have been occasionally been able to automatically connect to the internet few times randomly when i turn on my PC . I have tried contacting my ISP but they can't seem to find a solution. In the image provided you can see 2 connections : 1 is the ethernet which shows as unidentified and the other is a WAN PPOE which shows up due to connecting through Dial up. I have tried using other DNS, CMD commands and updating drivers but nothing seems to work. Note : I am presently using the company's modem directly without a router.

Hey, I have a very strange problem. When i go tethered network (does not matter if with an directly connected LAN cable or with a USB-LAN adapter) i see two common problems: 1. When using an Speed test like Speedtest.net i see a short burst in download speed followed by a steady decline. Normal up to 480mbits in the first 20% of the test and then slowly down to ~200 mbits to the end. 2. When i am using by onboard LAN i got only 20-30 mbits download. Upload is just fine with 50mbits more or less constant. I got an Msi MEG Z390 ACE with build in WIFI adapter, if i use the WIFI its fine and the speedtest climes up to 480-500 mbits and just stays there. Now comes to funny part. My pc is joined with my server on a splitter right before it gets to my router. My Server acts just fine with the expected 500/50 every time. I changed the cable from my pc to the splitter multiple times but it did not work. So nether the USB-LAN nor the build in LAN port does bring me constant download speeds. What in hell could be the problem? EDIT: Yes i did try turning off the WIFI Adapter when running the tests over LAN and vice version

For over a year I have been using CAT7 S/FTP in my home and every time when I run a new cable I wonder.. Does it really matter what type connector I use? I got Draka cat7 cable because I wanted to be future prove “better do it right the first time”. While the cable was easy to get, the LSA / RJ45 connectors just weren’t there. So I used CAT6a LSA wall outlets / patch panels and CAT5e RJ45 connectors. Even now it´s hard to find CAT7 rated products, and if you find them the price knocks you over. It gives me the feeling that the “right connector, keystone” doesn’t matter that much. And that it might be possible to get my 10GBe speed (best case) on a CAT7 cable equipped with CAT5e connectors. I would love to test this case, but I don’t own a 10GBe network (yet), so help me out guys. Does it really matter, and if yes, how much does it matter?

Looking for an unmanaged switch that supports 24-to-48 1gigabit ports(rj45) with 2-to-4 extra 10gigabit ports(rj45/sfp/sfp+, preferably rj45). Any legit brand will do. Thanks in advance. Edit: And also an unmanaged switch that supports 24 10gigabit ports. Thanks again

if i was to plug in from two ethernet ports in the back of my pc to the same router plugged into seperate ports, would i be able to say download torrents games from steam etc through one connection and stream through another? i get 20mbps d/l on speedtest but obviously a lot less on anything else but it drops more if im streaming (obviously) so would this fix the problem ? just wondering like i said, thanks

Ok we know modern consoles need massive drive for games. They usually only take 3.0 external drives but don't allow NAS connections. Is it possible to configure a raspberry pi or arduino to read from a samba server and translate that to read the network drive as usb drive? This seem like a simple hack to getting NAS storage. I don't know of any soft mods.

I built this PC day before yesterday and put a clean windows install on it. It posts, runs, and the first night it had internet access. Ever since then, my internet access has disappeared. Still hardwired. The yellow stays light blinks slow and steady while the green status light stay dark. My wifi is still working fine, and when I plug the same cable into my Xbox it has internet access. I am lost!

I've been in my apartment for 12 years now and never bothered checking what was behind my RJ-11 wall jacks. I recently did, and found Cat 5e wires, so I ran to my cabinet where my cable comes into, and pulled 4 Cat 5e cables out of the wall! I got super excited, purchased a bunch of RJ-45 keystones, and am waiting for them to arrive. In the meantime though, I pulled out a few of these just to see if they were all wired up, and they are, but I found one that is causing my brain to hurt. I'm hoping someone in here can give me some ideas as to why I found a Cat 5E cable and a Cat 6 cable spliced together, and then further spliced into another Cat 5E which was hooked up to this one wall jacks keystone (photos below). Any ideas at all would be appreciated! I'm pretty sure no one will know for sure, but maybe you've seen something like this before, or done something like this before that can help me narrow down the purpose. I'm posting some pictures to help understand whats going on. In the first picture, I removed some of the tape that was holding all these together so you can see what's been done. The brown stranded and solid wires were not connected (since it was hooked up to an RJ-11). Picture 2 is how I found it, but only after I already cut off the RJ-11 keystone. As you can see there is a Cat 5e that comes out from the box, and a Cat 6 that comes out from the box, and they are spliced together to the one cat 5e that was connected to the keystone. I can't find a Cat 6 cable anywhere else in the apartment, and I even went down to the basement and couldn't find a Cat 6 anywhere in the basement cabinet. I'm pretty sure I can just get rid of the Cat 6 since it doesn't come into my cabinet. I'm waiting for my RJ-45 tester to arrive since I'm not a pro and didn't have one, but in the meantime I just connected the brown wires to keep everything the way they were (see photos below). I believe it should work this way too, but I'd prefer to get rid of the cat 6 since this happens to be the outlet that would be connected to my home server, so I don't want to risk any issues. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey Everyone, I have this task to configure plc's, with cables from a switch on the roof. My question is, can you get a transmitter and a reciver with rj45, where they are paired together from factory? All suggestions are welcome!

Our ethernet ports in our bedrooms never worked since we moved in. Wifi is fine and we assumed it was a bad cable from the termination hub to the modem. So we ran a new cable through last night and punched down ourselves. We wired it according to the color codes and since our hub is a 568-A version, all the others looked fine too. But our ethernet still does not work. Any suggestions? Here is a link to what our hub looks like https://smile.amazon.com/Open-House-H628-Termination-Hub/dp/B00013BNVG/ref=pd_rhf_dp_p_img_5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3KNRG37ZD9Y0BGN3B6QS Here are pics of our cables as well. The blue ones were already plugged in when we got here and we did the whiteish/gray one.

Ik finally ready to setup networking right at new house and realy don't want to use WiFi if possible. I sometimes hate my self because of that Is there any real reason to use FTP CAT6 instead of UTP if network cables will run outside wall and no way near 220 power lines. Only 3-5 meters will be two network cables next to each other. With network cables I will connect 2 computers 1 tv Freenas sever In total about 40-50 meters of cable. And about Modular plugs. I'm only seen cat6 plugs for UTP cables but does it mater?

First of all: Hi everyone! Second of all: English is not my native language so please ignore my grammar :D So I'm switching my room with my mother, both are next to each other. Now, I have an RJ45 passing through two rooms to the one I have my PC now and I need to extend that RJ45 so I can reach the new room which is 3 rooms far from the router. Also, I would like to install here a Wifi Access point so I can use wifi in my new room. So, I was wondering what is the best solution, maybe there is an access point capable of both things, or maybe I need to use an ethernet hub in order to duplicate the connection and have one for the access point and the other for my room IDK guys. Hope you can help me and thanks in advance!

I am fixing to run three lines of Ethernet to my Living room from my Current switch. I am unable to run the cables inside the walls (Double wide Mobile home FML) so a surface run is my only choice. I am trying to figure out what I should use to hide the wires and make it look nice. I was just wondering if I used a metal conduit or Raceway, Would it impact the performance of the Ethernet cable? Im currently running Unshielded twisted pair.

Hello guys, i'm trying to connect via the console port to reset a Cisco 2960 switch that i recently bought. I also bought a couple of adapters to make it work and it is connected in the sequence : Console port -> ethernet cable -> Startech RJ45 to DB9 Modular Adapter -> Startech DB9 Serial to USB Adapter -> Laptop Since the RJ45 TO DB9 Adapter is modular, I have to manually wire the pins to the right spots. I found these pinouts to help me : https://sgcdn.startech.com/005329/media/sets/GC98FF_Manual/GC98FF.pdf http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/1240/installation/guide/1240hig5/124h_e.pdf https://allpinouts.org/index.php/Cisco_Console_RJ45_to_DB9_Pin It looks like this : (Sorry for the subpar pictures) http://imgur.com/a/wrtNn Then, in Putty, this is what I see : http://imgur.com/4QGaiWc It loops like that and it seems to be slightly different everytime. i've tried to reboot the switch and it does reboot normally until you get to the "Press RETURN to get started" where it starts to loop again if i press something. I've also tried reversing the black and yellow wires but it only replaces the characters in the loop with non-alphabetical characters. On the tek-tips forum the user "wires" says that he uses the following pinout for cisco console cables : Again, it did not work. I don't really know what to try next..

Hey guys, at a friend's house, I noticed that her ethernet cable is so broken it'll only register in one orientation. That's obviously extremely annoying, so I gave her an ethernet cable I still had lying around... it fits in her laptop just fine, but not in the wall, for there the cable already there has this connector (see picture) I've never seen that before. So... what IS this, and where can I get one for as cheap as possible? (Obviously we'll also ask the facility management, as the cable seems to be provided with the flat) Cheers, John

Well i was looking around for used electronics on Blocket and i found a coupple of small laptops, both for $60, might be able to get that down a bit possibly, and i was wondering which one is better for $60, the HP/Compac 2510p or the Asus Eee pc 1018P? there both tiny and portable and thats what i want, i want something that sitts on my desk, that i can watch youtube and chatt on and then take with me were ever i go. i dont plan on running any games on it what so ever and i WILL upgrade the RAM to around 8GB dual channel with whatever the max clock RAM they can have, because that can really make a difirence on some laptops. i also want it to have a RJ45 connector(ethernet port) because i might use it for some basic networking stuff too. thanks for any replies and any help

Hi, I have a server with one built in gigabit port and another from a PCIE to gigabit card and a mobo with dual gigabit ports. I currently just use a single gigabit connection. If I connected both dual ports to my gigabit switch is there a way in which I can get 2 gigabit speeds? Thanks, James

Hi all, I'll be moving house in the next few days and want to have the router in a different part of the house to the phone jack. I don't really want a new phone jack installed as it is quite expensive. I have a couple of questions; Is there a way to use an RJ45 cable for the DSL connection or does it have to be RJ12. If not is there anywhere I can get a decent sized (50 metre) RJ12 cable. Or is there another option. (Don't want powerline either as it crosses circuits in the house) Cheers.

Hey all, got a question for you. Generic 8 Port Ethernet Switch Vs Branded 8 Port Ethernet Switch Is there really a difference in performance (mostly for gaming on a LAN) between them as they do the same thing as I have bought some generic stuff (usb 3.0 hdd enclosures and stuff) and it works perfectly. Thanks in advance.

I found this keyboard on ebay today: http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-1395665-Mechanical-Model-M-Clicky-Keyboard-RJ45-Connector-/111605149447?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19fc2f6f07 Since it uses an RJ45 connector, I don't think a modern computer can connect to it without drivers, but then again I've never tested it out. Nevertheless, I really want to buy one and try it. It is a mechanical keyboard with clicky keys, and the vendor says that it is in usable condition, but it would still be a frivolous buy. Anyways, it has a reset key where the control key should be, and I don't think it would relay the same signal as control when pressed. Still interesting insight into the past, though. Here are some pictures.

So... a Cloud-Storage focused HDD with it's own built-in OS, eliminating the need for [possibly] cumbersome NAS setups. Whether it will out-perform a similarly-priced NAS will remain to be seen though. http://www.kitguru.net/components/hard-drives/anton-shilov/seagate-introduces-kinetic-hdds-with-ethernet-interface/

Hi, today I was fixing the problems with internet wires I had in my house, replaced the RJ45 connectors for new ones, used new cables and yay, internet works fin everywhere, but the problem is: I sticked the cable to my HTPC without actually crimping the RJ45, so it got a bit stuck in there. I pulled it out, but the port doesn't work anymore. Sometimes (in some position) the windows detects a network, but it has no access to the internet, and when I move the cable even a little bit, it says that the cable is disconnected. Tried the cable on my laptop and it works fine there, so cable is ok. Now I can't watch movies from my PC on HTPC, as I have to use network tethering of my phone with USB to get on the internet. Fun part is, I can go to IP of my MediaBrowser server and play movies, but I don't see my PC in Networking, so I can't play movies directly from it without server encoding (and with 1080P 30Mbps movies it lags sometimes as my PC has to encode it)..... TL;DR Sticked RJ45 that wasn't crimped to my Lan port, got it out, but internet doesnt work (tells that cable is disconnected), sometimes finds a network, but doesnt connect to internet. I made a picture of it. Is there anything I can do to fix it (easily), or should I by a dedicated Lan card (I want to have it working tomorrow, othervise I think I would just buy new lan card for 10€)?
