  1. So what is this? This is not one... not two... but THREE opportunities to do a LIVE Q&A session with coding professionals - Gregg Pollack, Alyssa Nicoll, and Carlos Souza of Code School. Linus has connected with them briefly and we think these stream will be very interesting for folks looking to get into coding, as well as folks who are already in it, but might be looking for their next steps or a bit of a change of pace. These great opportunities are being brought to you by Modis, a leader in the IT staffing industry! If you haven't seen our previous Modis livestream with Dan Pollock, we would highly recommend checking that out: http://youtu.be/UXf6RE9fn8Y. And be sure to check out their 2015 salary guide while you're at it! http://www.modis.com/clients/salary-guide/ The three half hour live Q&A sessions will be held on October 9, 2014 at 11am Pacific time, October 23, 2014 at 11am Pacific time, and November 6, 2014 at 11am Pacific time. 2. Is starting in C# a good choice? I literally don't know anything about programming and a friend told me it was easy enough and then if I master it I can proceed to Java and stuff..
  3. I will be attending Texas A&M next fall to major in computer science. As part of their policy, I need to choose between a HP Zbook 14 or a Dell Latitude E7450 for a school laptop. Following I have both of their given stats, so please help me choose between them. Use: Mainly for running code, but also for some 3D modeling (Autocad Inventor) most likely. Also, for playing some video games on the side! HP Zbook 14 Windows 7 Professional 64 Intel® Core™ i7-5500U (2.4GHz Base w/ 3.0 GHz Turbo, 4MB Cache, 2 cores) Processor AMD FirePro (1 GB dedicated GDDR5) 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (1D) 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive Dell Latitude E7450 Windows 7 Professional 64 Intel® Core™ i7-5600U (2.6GHz Base w/ 3.2 GHz Turbo, 4MB Cache, 2 cores) Processor Integrated Intel HD Graphics 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3L Memory 256GB Solid State Drive Mini Card Thank You!
  4. Have been watching and undertaking online Java tutorials through various sites, yet still feel like I've only scuffed off the shell of a broader topic. Does anyone have any recommendations for good up to date books/eBooks based around the language? Thanks in advanced!
  5. Hello guys i'm not the very best programmer or web designer but i managed to create my website "www.streamerzarmy.com" and today i got a comment that said my RSS feed wasn't working. Can anyone help me please? You can open the website and click on the RSS button and see what i'm talking about or click here to go directly to the link that it opens.
  6. Google has posted their own guide to becoming a successful Software Engineer. The guide is a suggested path for University students to develop their skills but personally I don't see why someone younger couldn't do it if they have the dedication to accomplish the goal. Anyway, they do note that you should be aware of the following before/when using the guide: I think its great that Google has done this so people know what the industry wants. Though, of course, a lot of other companies want other things from you so just because Google suggests C++, Java or Python as an object oriented programming language to study, doesn't mean all companies use these. (Just a small tip, but hey those three are very big so what do I know ) THE GUIDE HERE: https://www.google.com/about/careers/students/guide-to-technical-development.html NOTE: I just noticed that some links lead to sites like Udacity which needs a subscription to use it. (Though, Udacity, I believe offers a free version of their service but without help from coaches and you do not receive certificates that you've completed things etc. But they do offer a 14 day free trial on the full version.) Just thought I'd point it out. Though, you can still use the guide from Google and the links that needs payment, find something else with the same content. Or pay if you really want that content of course!
  7. Unofficial Challenge : Make a simple script that runs on startup in DD-WRT v24-sp2 build 21061. Reward : Assassins Creed Unity Game Code !!! (primary goals) GTA 5 ( will need to buy a copy so it might take time  ) (Secondary satisfied) You will be credited in every source I post this which will be helpful for a lot of people( but you can decide if I should post this elsewhere) Primary Goals : The script has to login to the ISP automagically on router start up. (Primary Goal) It should not affect other dd-wrt settings. Secondary Goal : It may check every say 10 minutes for login status and if logged out then it must proceed to login. (without auto reboot every time of-course ) Conditions : First one to complete the primary challenge gets the ACU code. First one to complete the secondary challenge gets the GTA code.(after a max of 2 weeks  ) If a user completes both challenges at a time he gets both the codes. Linus Tech Tips or the LTT Forum has nothing to do with this challenge. You can ask anyone to do it wherever it may be but the first post on this forum will be the one eligible for the codes. If you do not know dd-wrt thingy create a .bat file that executes after 10 minutes of PC startup. ( you are eligible only if no one submits a way to do it in dd-wrt) Must be EASY TO DO : I am a noob in coding and programming If you need additional data ask me and I ll provide it for sure but please be specific with step by step procedures. Must mention the areas where I should type the credentials with a clear procedure or snapshot highlighting it. Snapshot of logged in page : http://prntscr.com/70n3nx Snapshot of logged in page : http://prntscr.com/70n2lr References of previous attempts( very useful for knowing what you are dealing with ) : Please credit them if their ways helped you http://www.brijin.net/login-to-tikona/ http://log.amitshah.net/2010/09/auto-login-to-web-proxies-using-networkmanager/ Source Code: ( login page ) Primary URL: 1.254.254.254 (redirects to a 5 second countdown after redirecting to Secondary URL) Secondary URL : https://login.tikona.in/userportal/login.do?requesturi=http%3A%2F%2F1.254.254.254%2F&act=null After login : URL : https://login.tikona.in/userportal/newlogin.do?phone=0
  8. As the title says, I want to learn developing universal windows apps. Now, I'm a bit lost. I don't know a lot of programming. I only know the basics of C++. I thought that I'd be able to learn by following tutorials on Microsoft's websites. So, I jumped right in. First, I downloaded Visual Studio Express 2013. Then followed this [ https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/ff402526%28v=vs.105%29.aspx ] tutorial. But it didn't seem to match with anything and so after fumbling around for a day, I found another tutorial [ https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/dn631760.aspx ], this time for developing universal apps. It matched fine until I hit an error loading the designer. I couldn't fix it and now I don't know where to go. Do I need to learn something else before jumping in development? If not, which tutorial should I follow? If I have to follow the windows dev center one, how do I fix the designer problem? Please help, I'm desperate.
  9. name = str(input("Hello, what is your name?")) print ("Hello "+name) question = str(input("Please press: 1 for multiplication, 2 for addition, 3 for division, or 4 for subtraction.")) #<---singular loop---> mult = 1 if mult: print ("Ok let's do some multiplication.") num1 = int(input("Number 1: ")) num2 = int(input("Number 2: ")) print ("So your numbers are: ",(num1),(num2)) print ("Here is your answer:") print (num1 * num2) else: print ("Sorry please try one of the listed numbers.") add = 2 if add: print ("Ok let's do some addition.") num3 = int(input("Number 1: ")) num4 = int(input("Number 4: ")) print ("So your numbers are: ", (num3), (num4)) print ("Here is your answer:") print (num3 + num4) else: print ("Sorry please try one of the listed numbers.") Ok so i have recently began using python and am trying to allow the user to enter in a number(either 1,2,3, or 4) and then based off of what number was entered have the corresponding math type to open. I think the code itself will probably explain what i am trying to do. Anyway my issue is when i get to the part when it asks for a number and i enter 1 for multiplication, multiplication opens like it is supposed to, but if i enter in 2 for addition multiplication still opens. Infact no mater what i enter the multiplication opens. Ugh i cant figure this out someone please help!
  10. Howdy y'all, I'm a 22 year old sysadmin trying to get into programming. On a day-to-day basis I have to automate tasks through a script editor that is integrated to our RMM software. I'm not sure what the language is (probably an overlay of Ruby) but I understand the core premise of scripting languages at least - for my needs, it's all sequential and relies on nested if statements. So for example, I start a script like this: Here's a very basic example of a type of script that I make: If: 'C:\Program\File1' exists Then: 1. Download Zip1.zip 2. Download Unzip.exe 3. Unzip.exe Zip1.zip 4. Run File2.msi /q 5. Gpupdate.exe /force Else: 1. Download File1 2. Download Zip1.zip 3. Download Unzip.exe 4. Unzip.exe Zip1.zip 5. Run File2.msi /q 6. Gpupdate.exe /force My question is this: how do you get into actual programming? I'm interested in learning how to program to better understand why what I do on a command line makes sense. Long-term goals would be learning SQL due to necessary administration of SQL applications - but other than that I can't figure out which language to try to learn/how to learn it/why learn that language over any other. I've logged 2 hours on CodeAcademy with Python (chose that since it's the code behind Dropbox, and it seemed cool) but I was unable to see the bigger picture - I can't see where my code transforms from line of commands to an actual executable. What would you guys recommend? Thanks for reading, and any input would be appreciated!
  11. so i am currently trying to learn a little bit of python so i can make my website and i am looking for a good free website that gives me tutorials that i can use for free thanks in advance
  12. Hello there, I have a simple simple question. Where do I start? I am going to University next year and want to get a head start over other student in terms of programming. I have started "learning" Python on code academy which have found good for learning the basics however quite difficult to master for the harder problems with lots of searching for the answer and working backwards from there. So basically all i'm asking is should I have started with Python? Am I just being dumb for the harder questions on Code Academy or is there a better website for learning off? Thanks in advance.
  13. Hi everyone, I'm just wondering if there is a way to choose where to save a file in a web application. I know it is very unsecure, and I also know that the browser is the one who chooses where to save a file when downloading. But I am not making a consumer/public website, I'm currently making a private system so I need a way on how to force a web application to show the "Save as" dialog and enable the user to choose where they want to save the file. Thank you all in advance....
  14. Recently I have been looking into programming, and would like to give it a crack. Anyone out there have any suggestions as to the best one to learn for a beginner, or any tutorials? Before anyone jumps in and says don't, it's waste of time etc, I would like to make that decision myself. Cheers.
  15. Hi everyone! I'm new to this site, was up way too late after I found the YouTube channel last night. So much stuff to learn! I'm a game programmer and artist, and I've been on a 2011 iMac for the past few years. It's not powerful enough to run Unreal Engine 4, so I'm working on my first desktop build. Excited to get back into the Windows world and check out all the games I've missed, too. The software I'll be using most is Photoshop, Illustrator, AE, Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine, and VS2013. I've put this build together based on some recommended specs posted by the Unreal staff. Since I code iOS apps I'd also like to have the option to Hackintosh it in case the iMac dies, so I've tried to follow this recommended build from tonymacx86 as well. Here's my part list, trying to stay under $2000: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Kx8Zzy I'd love some feedback since I'm pretty clueless about all this! The mobo has some pretty bad reviews on Newegg, but I've seen it listed in a lot of successful builds as well. I'm also not entirely sure I've chosen the right PSU and graphics card - I know I want a GeForce and not a Quadro, not sure if the 780 would be a better choice for this type of work though. Really, any tips about anything would be a huge help! Thanks so much for taking a look!
  16. So... ummm, yeah, my university requires us to do some work in Fortran-66. I agree that that is stupid as hell (and we can't use at least Pascal because... reasons), but the work has to be done, and I need a compiler that will work on my laptop (and I'm too lazy to install Windows on VM, unless there are no other options whatsoever). I've signed up for Intel's Fortran Complier trial, but they've yet to send me a confirmation email... Any suggestions?
  17. I have been thinking about making a tutorial for beginners for some time but never had the time. Now that I have some free time, I decided to begin now. I am hoping to start two series. The first series is a beginners/intermediates tutorial while the second series is a user’s choice tutorial where users PM me a topic title they want me to create a tutorial for and after a vote I will create a tutorial showing how to code the choice with the most vote. The topic titles can be in the form “how to make a calculator in VB”, “how to make a Point of Sale website” or something along those lines. I will also be answering any question that any users might have in text or video form depending on the question that the users ask. I hope you will give me feedback by replying. The feedbacks can be about improvement that can be made to my idea and/or any other feedback you might have. NOTE: This is just a thread to see what the user feedback is. Do not send me a topic title for the second series before I update this thread or create a new one. Edit: Updated poll to include more options.
  18. Problem #1 - Deletable Primes So here's the first problem for a (hopefully) fun series of Problem Solving challenges! I solved a similar problem as a part of my introductory course to programming at University, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Problem Description: A Deletable Prime is a prime number from which you can remove digits one at a time, and each iteration of this removal gives you another prime. Let's look at an example of a deletable prime: 410256793 41256793 4125673 415673 45673 4567 467 67 7 All of the numbers above are prime, and deletable (by definition). It is worth noting that numbers such as: 10859 859 59 5 Are not Deletable Primes, because the removal of digit 1 implied the removal of digit 0 (10859 => 859), and thus it is not a valid sequence. Your objective is to find all of the Deletable Primes in range [0, 10000000], and output the number of Deletable Primes in that range, as well as their sum. Input: None. Output: Two lines. At the end of every line there must be a line break (\n). The first line is the number of Deletable Primes existing in the interval [0, 10000000]. The second line is the sum of all of those Deletable Primes. Example Output (range [0, 10000]): 699 3168960 How to test your solution: I have built a very simple web gateway. It is still very much in BETA, as it was developed in a few hours for this purpose. The gateway has a listing of problems, and you create an account to submit your program's output to check if it is the correct solution to a given problem. The problem page there is also easier on the eyes than this thread's formatting (my bad!). I chose this method because I don't like giving out the solution to problems, and it's fun because we can have a small gateway where we can check each other's stats. I'll be adding new features to the gateway eventually. Without further ado, you can test your solution through the gateway located at this link. It is very simple to use, and I hope the community enjoys it. The account creation process is very minimal, and your password is salt-hashed. Final notes: Create your account at the gateway with the same username as the one you use at the forums. Include your code in spoiler tags, so that the thread isn't cluttered with code. If you're having trouble solving the problem, ask the community for help! You may learn a lot from them. Don't worry too much about efficiency if you're starting out. Solve the problem first, we'll then tell you how to improve it. Please don't share the output solution if you've solved the problem. If the problem description isn't clear, please ask for further explanation!
  19. Hi, I'd like to know your opinions about the PC I'm building. I will use it for coding on Linux and gaming and video editing on Windows. FYI I'm currently using a Dell Vostro 3700 with a 2.4 Ghz core i5 and I am able to edit videos and playing a few games. I've been able to finish Arkham City without changing the default settings. I have about 30 games released between 2009 and 2013 in my Steam library, so I don't plan to play very recent games for the moment, otherwise I'm okay with reducing the settings. So these are the components : - CPU Intel core i3 4330 - Case Zalman ZM T4 - CPU Cooler Thermaltake Nic - PSU LDLC QS-450+ Quality Select 80PLUS Gold (it's French !) - Motherboard ASRock H81M - Graphic card Sapphire Radeon R7 260X 2G GDDR5 - RAM memory Kingston DDR3 1600 8 Go KVR CL9 HyperX - Keyboard Zalman ZM-K400G - Hard drive SSHD Seagate 1 To So the total price shouldn't be above 500€. I already have some of the components : the CPU cooler, the PSU and the RAM. I'll order the HDD this weekend. For the next evolutions, I planned to buy a SSD (unless SSHD become better), do a crossfire and maybe change the CPU. But I won't do any change before Christmas. So are there better choices to make? Thanks
  20. Hi, so I don't know if there is anyone out there programming .Net but I thought I'd give it a try and see if anyone did know anything about it here or if it's just more advanced stuff. So I have a timer that is set to tick every 7 minutes. Then, every 7 minutes, I want the timer to make a the mouse/cursor move slightly to the left or right. This is just so that I can have an OS running and the screen saver will not go on. I know, just change the settings. But no. I'm doing this for a teacher at my school because their computers cannot have their settings modified and when he wants to show a presentation and is on a slide for a long time. The screen saver goes on. The IT depertment at the school are morons and refuses to allow him to change it so I decided to make this for him. So I googled this but I couldn't come up with anything useful. At least that I could understand and put together into a timer. Please help me with this. Would be great to help him out! Regards, Ludwig Johnson
  21. Hey guys this is a repost because no one replied to my first one but I'm trying to set up eclipse and JDK for my computer but when I try setting my path to the JDK bin folder I get the following error. Failed to load the JNI shared library"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.7.0_45\bin\..\jre\bib\cliant\jvm.dll". This is what I have my current PATH set to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.7.0_45\bin And these are the versions of Eclipse and Java JDK Eclipse Standard 4.3.1 jdk-7u45-windows-i586
  22. Hey guys, So, here is the build, mostly. Any more information, please ask. Case: Corsair 900D PSU: Corsair TX 750 CPU: Intel i7 4770k CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Extreme Ram: 4X8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866 GPU: Asus GTX 780 DC2OC SSD: 2X256GB Samsung Evo HDD: 1TB Western Digital Black, 2TB Western Digital Green Monitor: Asus VN248H-P 23.8" IPS BD-Rom: Asus Blu-ray Burner Mouse: Razer Naga MMO Mouse Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Battlefield 4 Edition Headset: Razer Tiamat 7.1 So, as you can tell, I'm pretty comfortable with Asus, Razer, and Corsair. I have used and enjoy their products and Corsair's warranty people were awesome with me before. Beyond that, I think I made some good choices. I currently do computer programming for a living. Mostly web applications, but the occasional mobile app stuff. I also plan on joining the PC gaming master race, but I wanted to be able to do it all. I think this build will be able to do it for me. Also, I haven't been into too much overclocking, so a lot of this is learning for me. I'm enjoying getting into learning all of this. I am thinking about doing a fully water cooling system soon. Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated. Also, sex appeal is something I'm looking for. Everything already has a red/black theme to it, so I am just going to run with it. Maybe integrate some white. Any advice on LEDs? I'm not sure how those are installed. One thing I thought someone smarter could help me with was the fan orientation. Should the radiator be in push, or pull, or whatever. There are three fans in the front. One exhaust in the back. I'm not sure the best set up. Also, anything else I should get or advice would be nice. Everything should be arriving Wednesday, if not Thursday. I'm kind of new to this forum. Should I post pictures and stuff to here? Would people like that. Kind of go over everything. I don't know. Someone tell me. Thanks, Kevin
  23. Does anyone know of any keyboards that are good for both programming and gaming? I don't know a lot about the different switch types so if someone can explain. Also something that isn't too heavy or big I'd probably be throwing it in my bag a lot and moving with it using it for a laptop. Lastly it can't be too much, at most $200. thanks
  24. I'm working as hard as I can to become a programmer and learn as much as possible. Except I run Ubuntu 12.04LTS and I'm finding the programming not noob-friendly and I want something noob friendly. I've had allot of problems with Windows but is it worth switching back to get more noob-friendly programming. I've ran multiple virtual machines in Linux to try and do programming but its far from the same as doing it when your only using Windows. So I want to see what you think. Thanks in advance
  25. I am trying to understand the principles. I guess some simple examples will help me understand it. Thank you.
