@Den-Fi  And also @TVwazhere and @LogicalDrm since you guys reacted to it as well:

    Everything is inherently political.

The gun thread on the forum is political and yet there are no consequences for the politics going on there, sometimes even being engaged by some of the mods including political discussions on gun laws and regulations and policy ideas.

The policy of not allowing politics is itself political.

People who have "Murica" or other stuff similar in their profiles or stuff is political.

The person who chooses to use a bald eagle with an american flag as their pfp is political.

    Tech News involves politics.

Politics affects everything and trying to cover your eyes so you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist or doesn't make it stop existing.

This ban as it was described is like the police saying it takes a lot of time to do traffic stops therefore nobody should be allowed to drive cars except the police. If you don't see a problem with that then I don't know what to say to you.

Yes, I am bummed out by the fact that Status Updates couldn't continue to be treated differently but I am more concerned with where does it end. Next thing you know talking about tech news anywhere on the forum will be banned and then talking unfavourably about LMG and then talking about anything other than asking for helping or giving help. And then not even that will be allowed.

The mod team try to say this isn't censorship but I must refer to the TOS which literally calls for the mod team to engage in censorship:

    Quote

    Free Speech

We do not take responsibility for, endorse, or accept liability for any content submitted to linustechtips.com. Any opinions expressed by users do not necessarily reflect the views of linustechtips.com.

Although we encourage the open exchange of information, ideas, and opinions on our forum, we reserve the right to remove or censor posts that are harassing or hateful, among other things, and to suspend and/or ban offending accounts.

I am against censorship. Although one could construe the whole topic of censorship to be political because it would be convenient on the part of the mod team to do that and get rid of any undesirable speech such as dissenters.

@colonel_mortis claims in his Status Update thread to not want people to leave over this and yet @LogicalDrm openly disagreed with him in the same status update thread and wants people gone if they were the type of person to previously post semi-politicial content in Status Updates before.

Whatever the story from the mod team, because make no mistake there is a story being told and there seems to be disagreement among the mod team about which one to tell, at least one regular and longtime member has left and many more will follow if they haven't already.

I can't say that I blame the person who left and frankly if the mod team tries to push the envelope on forum censorship then I'll be leaving as well.

The moderation team is in unanimous agreement about this decision.

I've remained relatively quiet about this mostly because I respect the opinions of the people who disagree with the decision. As mentioned already, there are other places, forums and media that you can talk all you wish about politics. (And contrary to what was said by someone on Mortis's Status update, you can in fact post direct link to alternative sites such as L1 Tech, reddit, etc. These fall under permitted links given the context.)

It also does not mean you have to exclusively use one or the other. I use LTT forums to discuss my passion for computers, cases and sometimes videogames. I use other places to express my appreciation and passion for other things such as cars, memes, my S/O and yes, even politics on occasion. I don't need a "one site has all" solution to enjoy my time anywhere else or here at LTT. You could use any other outlet for politics and well as any other topic you wish to partake in, and still be a part of this community if you so wished.

    @TVwazhere I wasn't saying that the decision wasn't unanimous.

But the sentiment surrounding it and reason given seems to change depending on who you ask.

@Den-Fi I would disagree, I think it is fairly heavily moderated already with hard lines in the sand. It's just that the hard lines aren't exposed to the public.
