I think it does, I once installed windows 7 on an xp laptop for someone. They asked where their files are and I told them in windows.old and I never heard anymore.

have you try using the Windows Repair option?

I have used the Win 7 disc before to get my Vista OS working when it have the boot failure and the update loop issue.

    worth the shot

or get the Ubuntu live CD to access the HDD

They do look nice, but I personally wouldn't pay $100 for it. With a bit of practice, sleeving is pretty easy and doesn't take long. It's also much, much cheaper to do it by yourself (I got enough to do two full PSUs for around £20.)

Nevertheless, they do look well done. Especially the molex.

Have you connected the SSD to SATA port 0? That's what I would suggest.

    -Set SATA Ports to AHCI
-Connect SSD to SATA port 0
-install Windows from an USB thumb drive

Some boards had problems installing Windows 7 with AHCI from optical drives. That could be an issue with your board as Asus suggests to set SATA port 5+6 to IDE for a Windows installation with an optical drive.

I had this once with an Asus DVDRW drive which was a little bit older (build around '06 or '07 if I remember right). Once I switched to a brand new one from LG (was back in 2013) everything worked fine. If you have/know someone with an external DVD drive that would be an option too.

I agree one 8GB stick makes more sense than two 4GB on an H81 board with two DIMMs. Dual channel means almost nothing for gaming performance.

yes this is still a budget oriented build to me..
of course it does not have to be an R9 290 or GTX 970 GPU i just said it can handle as much as one of these...it's always a good idea to have a CPU that will be plenty and allow for a GPU upgrade later don't you think?
it could even be cheaper with a i5-4440 and a cheap H81 board...single 8GB ram stick so that you could upgrade to 16GB if needed...this is the best bang for the buck budget oriented build of the day:

I do think the G3258 was a brilliant marketing ploy by Intel though. They're obviously doing great on yields on their chips, and must be making tons of high binned Pentiums that they can unlock, knowing most will easily hit 4GHz. Then offer them in crazy combo deals with CPU+board, knowing they're just weak enough that everyone is going to want to upgrade to a more expensive chip pretty soon. They created a way to sell off their Pentiums while getting people to abandon AMD's cheap options, and on top of that they get to sell most of those users an i5-4690k after they have had their appetite whet by taking their Pentium up an entire 1GHz on average (seems like most Pentium G3258's can hit 4.2GHz on the stock cooler).

I mean that's exactly what they did with me. I bought the Pentium and an H81 board on special at newegg in a $75 combo. I was only looking to upgrade my web browsing, video watching, Minecraft playing, and programming on computer from an Athlon64x2 4000+ that was finally starting to feel slow even on Linux. But doing that huge overclock on my Pentium brought me back to the days when I'd overclock my Athlon XP in a high end gaming system, and made me really want to build a gaming system instead of sticking with the consoles I had been playing since 2006. So they got me to buy a $250 Xeon. And it was a great deal. I paid $20 essentially (the board still runs $55) to rent a Pentium for 3.5 months and have a much better performing computer than with my Athlon64x2. I would have absolutely upgraded to a cheap AMD CPU without the G3258 combo deals, and I would probably be gaming on a $400 PS4 now instead of just spending the $650 to get a much better gaming experience by upgrading my G3258 system to a Xeon+GTX 970 system. So it seemed like a win-win for Intel and I with the G3258.

yes it's a good entry level CPU, should be paired with a lower end card unless you use it has a place holder until you can afford a better chip...but then it's 70$ wasted pretty much...i don't know.
Also if you are going to use a mid-range GPU for a while you could even look at a core i3-4150 for example this is a 100$ chip that does MUCH better in those modern games...it's not the end all be all cpu and it should not be paired with a high-end card, but it's still potent and it will not stutter nearly as bad in games...an i3-4150 and a GTX 760, GTX 960 or R9 280 GPU for example makes a lot of sense if you don't care about max out ultra settings and 60+ FPS...if you think you're good with medium/high settings and 45 to 60FPS then this one might be for you...yet an i5-4460 and cheap H97 board is the sweetspot i'd recommend for budget gaming rig...won't cost much more but perform a lot better and can be paired with a GTX 970 or R9 290 GPU.

Format SSD (again?),unplug SSD from motherboard,Clear CMOS,reset BIOS,Plug SSD to motherboard switch to AHCI,Install OS,See if still default IDE.

Take all the time you need to figure it,just play with it...If in the end still can't get rid of IDE...then...why not take it,although SSD's true performance might be blocked, but at least it's stable.

    I recommend an I5-4440 + MSI H81m-p33 if on a budget, otherwise get the 4690k or 4790k with a Z97 board

There you go...recording done with shadowplay (very minimal impact on CPU load, the games ran just as shit before i hit the record key)

That being said the games where ran at maximum settings...if you pair this CPU with a mid range or low end GPU you'll run games on low settings just fine and it should not stutter that bad...
crysis 3 and watchdogs remains unplayable at any settings IMHO though...most other games in this video would be playable i guess.

If you look at the framerates you must admit they are not that bad...if you would make a graph and put average FPS it would be an okay number for these games (around 40 to 50FPS i guess) but all the lag and stuttering really kills the gameplay.

Yeah, @i_build_nanosuits video with his simulated G3258 (disabling cores and HT on his 4770k and OCing to 4.5GHz) and GTX 780 are pretty close to my experience using a real G3258 @ 4.4GHz with a GTX 970 (the 780 and 970 are pretty close performance wise).

But you're right, the single core performance on a G3258 is outstanding, and like runit3 said, it is extremely strong for running emulators. PCSX2 was incredible on my Pentium.

Even CPU light games like Tomb Raider ran terribly on my Pentium in most parts of the game. The one exception for newer games was Bioshock Infinite, where even pinned to 100% on both cores the Pentium ran the game like a champ with VSync to 60FPS. No stutter whatsoever and a very consistent 60FPS, as well as a consistent 100% GPU usage on my 970 if I turned VSync off. I didn't play BF4 but I don't believe for a second you could get through the campaign, much less MP, without hitting some really ugly stuttering.

We could cherry pick Youtube videos all day, but that is a far cry from a well composed benchmark/real world review where multiple parameters are tested. @i_build_nanosuits has an exceptional write up with multiple videos for the G3258 (simulated).

Sure. Got a fresh one that arrived yesterday a few inches from my hands as well.

The G3258 is great if you don't need the extra cores. Like any cpu, it's great if it does the job. Not much else matters once you have enough when it comes to things like gaming.
Does it make the i5 sweat? --only if you don't need the extra threads.
