SERVER DESIGNATION: "Vanaheim" (Norse: World of Vanir, Group of Gods/Goddesses)
    CASE: Fractal Design Node 804
PSU: Corsair RM 550W 80+ Gold - Fully Modular
MB: Supermicro X10SL7-F Micro ATX LGA1150
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 V3 3.1Ghz Quad Core
HS: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
    RAM: Crucial 16GB DDR3-1600 ECC
    RAID CARD: N/A
    SSD: N/A
    HDD 1: 8x 4TB WD Red 5400 RPM (WD40EFRX) (32TB)
    HDD 2: 4x 3TB WD Green 5400 RPM (WD30EURS) (12TB)

    Software and Configuration:
Running FreeNAS 9.10.1 (d989edd) - Designated "Æsir" (The primary race of Norse Gods)
    I have setup two Volumes:
    ZFS RAIDZ2 - 8x 4TB Drives - Usable storage of 20.0TB (RAW 32TB) - Designated "Vanir" (A Group of Norse Gods/Goddesses)
ZFS RAIDZ2 - 4x 3TB Drives - Usable storage of 5.1TB (RAW 12TB) - Designated "Asynjur" (Another Group of Norse Gods/Goddesses, Belonging to the Æsir)

    Usage:
The main Volume "Vanir" is used primarily as a secure redundant storage for my streaming media and content creation storage (Podcast, Gaming footage). Full system drive backups will eventually go here once setup.
The secondary Volume "Asynjur" is used as storage for backups of programs, DVR storage for my Antenna DVR system, and other miscellaneous non-critical data. These are just spare drive I had, and as you'll see below, are hacked to fit in the system.
    Backup:
My entire household is in the process of being backed up offline to SOS Online Backup Crashplan. I have CenturyLink Gigabit internet, but the backup is still taking a few weeks.

I can see the merit both ways honestly. For myself, if I'm on a budget rig, I'd probably prefer longevity of the system base, and upgrade the GPU down the line a little ways.

Yea I read that review and was like..... Really?

So it's just one more thing. In essence with the deal I got on the case for $75 instead of $125, it makes up the difference.

Or get a WD green 3TB for 85. I have several of these, have for many years, with no problems. I cannot say the same for Seagate.

Yea, I might consider other PSUs. Honestly not sure on the CPU load, as I'm not sure how often PLEX transcodes video on the fly, that's the only reason why I could see value in a bit higher processor.

I think I'll still spend some time looking for a PSU, but I'm going to highly lean towards modular if I can find it for a reasonable price. I just hate the rats nest.

Gonna pass on that, as I'd like to be able to do more than basic things.

Yep, that's what I recall now from that article. Nightmare. They've worked flawlessly in RAID 10 tho.

If we're going there, Let's go there all the way:

SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SL7-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard - $249

    When I changed to 4TBs, I dropped the array to 7. 7x$149=$1,043 = 28TB -> ~ 18TB useable
    Vs 5TB drives: 6x$209 = $1,254 = 30TB -> 18TB useable (all according to This calculator)

That's an extra $200 I could spend trying to find a board that doesn't lock me into only 6 ports if I care to expand in the future.

With this board it appears everything else still works in my parts list?

That's my thought on it as well honestly, but who knows. Since the price point is close, I guess I can avoid the problem altogether.

Nemockulous got a reaction from Arty in Planning a RAID array, need some advice
So I'm currently in the planning stages of a storage solution that will serve as a backup and cold storage for old raw video files and backup of important data.

    My options:
Install 6x 4TB WD reds in RAID 1+0 (reduce software RAID overhead) [12TB] Buy dedicated RAID card for current PC, use it to house 6 Drives (6x 4TB WD Reds (RAID 6)) [16TB] Buy case + Powersupply for old X58 based system, run FreeNAS or Linux based solution from this system (6x 4TB WD Reds (RAID 6)) [16TB] :
    -----EVGA X58 Mobo
    -----CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
-----Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield Quad-Core 2.66GHz Purchase new MoBo/CPU/RAM/Case/PSU for server system, install FreeNAS/Linux solution (6x 4TB WD Reds (RAID 6)) [16TB] I'm really just not sure which direction to pursue at the moment, and that system in (3.) hasn't been booted or run in over 4 years, I just have it lying around.

Overall the goal for this setup is a backup/cold storage array, but I also might use it as a media stream array as well, so as far as performance goes it needs to be able to handle streaming across the network fairly well.

I appreciate any input and advice you can offer. I've dabbled with small RAID arrays in the past, but this size and type are out of my comfort area to tackle alone. Thanks!

Don't quite see why it matters, but ok. Is my avatar better? Does that satisfy you? Or is post my asking for help on a forum which I thought was full of helpful people invalid because my post count is 23 (24 now)?
Please let me know, as I am curious on your answers.

Looks fine to me. Nice cooling graph as well . Maybe see of you can get the 850 Evo 1TB for the same price.
