Clicked on this thinking OP meant retro hardware 😅... I just maxed out my first build for giggles - Athlon XP 3200, 3GB RAM on an ASUS A7N8X-E.... was looking at a Radeon 3850 AGP and was shocked by the going prices... $150-200 USD. ... Guess GPUs really are in short supply LOL

By watching a lot of videos, since the Chinese starting introducing a ton of dual "x79" motherboards (and single ITX ones as well) there has been renewed interest in cheap workstation-class systems. Much of the benchmark testing using the latest and greatest GPUs and will tell you if the CPU or GPU is the limiting factors. the YT channel "Craft Computing" has some very nice and detailed reviews on these things.

Bear in mind the old Ivy Bridge CPUs, as cheap as they are, are a dead end as more and more games are taking advantage of instruction sets that don't exist in those chips (Tech YES City pointed that out in his review of a dual x79 board) so if gaming is your primary interest, you'll need to be careful about how you spend your dollars.

Anyone else have a partner that complains about your "wasteful" three monitors or "unsightly" VR cameras or mistakes boxed games/blurays on the shelf for books only to become disappointed upon up-close inspection? ?

I see. Have you any reason to suspect this card could possibly have been used in some mining operation? I've known of people renting warehouse space for mining and sometimes not ideal environmental conditions. The cheap price has me suspicious. Anyway, only other thing i can think of is to use a polishing attachment on a rotary tool like a Dremel. I am assuming it functions well and its great that you changed the thermal paste.

More VRAM wont impact the PSU as clock speeds will. Anyway, I hate that this 3GB version of the card exists... it was outdated the moment it was released. I'd say, get the 6GB or some other sort of card - a Radeon 580 or 590 perhaps. They are relatively inexpensive.

I'm not keen on that second paragraph, because it implies that women naturally gravitate away from tech the less they have to worry about money and rights.  I know this is the "nurture" part, but we can also argue that many of these richer and more egalitarian countries are also dealing with patriarchal legacies where men are supposed to be the technical ones while their wives work care-giving roles (teachers, nurses and the like).  Women may be discouraged from using tech because those countries have the 'luxury' of discouraging a whole gender from pursuing certain fields.

I agree that people of all genders can dislike tech, but there's definitely evidence that women have been discouraged from using tech.  For example, enrollment by women in Computer Science BAs was as high as 37 percent in 1984, but dipped to half that today.  That's chalked up to PC vendors marketing computers primarily to men, to college courses largely being designed by and for men, and primary/secondary schools tending to encourage comp sci learning more among boys than girls.

Don't get me wrong, schools and companies have been encouraging women to get into tech for a while, but I wouldn't say there was a concerted effort to improve representation until relatively recently.

A lot of this comes down to women having been discouraged from using tech when they were younger.  Computers and video games were "supposed" to be for boys, so it's not surprising they have no interest in it.

With that said: no matter what your hobby, there's a give and take.  Your partner doesn't have to like your pursuits, but they should respect them within reason; if they don't, they don't respect you.  Likewise, you also have to accept that your partner might never enjoy something the way you do, and that's okay.  And, for that matter, accept that your partner can call you out when your hobby is clearly going over the top; we all need a BS filter.

Had the crazy idea to upgrade my 1997 IBM Aptiva - my first childhood computer (there's video coming...) and my hands are dry and scraped up as if I were working construction all day... what's up with 90's chassis metal?  You know... that gray metal they sprayed primer on but nothing more. Love that beige BTW - thank you Germany...
