    Any time!

I am sure there are other good coolers.. I am not really a Noctua guy, but people seem to like them.. 😄

    Long a short is a I had an Ultra 120 Extreme and a D14, and I sold the D14 😜

Ah.. all my fans are Noctua.. iPPC 3K  🤫

Darn, the FC140 is too chunky for my SFF. I'll do more digging. Thanks for the suggestion nonetheless!

Fair enough, I guess if I can get the 5900x for cheaper than the 5800x3d, there's no point in not getting the 5900x.

I see you're using a 5900x with a B550. Do you have any air or aio suggestions?

Mostly for gaming honestly, anything related to work has been fine on the 3600. I'm essentially looking for an FPS uplift on an ultrawide at 3440x1440.
The 5800x3D is really enticing since the performance results have shown a bit of a gain over the 5800x (and honestly it doesn't make much sense to get a 5800x if the 5700x exists). However the 5800x3D probably won't be sub $400 any time soon whereas I can get the 5900x right now for ~$360.

I considered the 5600X but as of right now the difference between that and the 5800X (on sale) is $10-20. Hence why I'm pretty set on the 5800X.

I ran my 5800x under a L12i. I had to use fairly heavy PBO. I was at -20ish counts. I could have gone higher, but I was overheating my PSU(case I used had a poor thermal layout)

Cooling your 3600 is clearly a walk in the park for the Scythe, it will be fine with a 5800X. It would probably be fine with a 5900X, though that may get a bit noisy.

The 5900X is easier to cool than the 5800X, both use the same amount of power but the 5900X spreads the heat across 2 chiplets.

It should be no problem to cool the 5800X with that cooler but the temps are going to be on the higher side, and if you have issues with temperatures you can just use the Eco Mode or undervolt it to lower the power consumption.

The Ryzen 5 3600 runs at a 65W TDP whereas the Ryzen 7 5800X runs at a 105W TDP. While AMD TDP numbers are kinda BS, it does reflect that, at stock, the 5800X draws about 60% more power, and so will put off about 60% more heat, which is not insubstantial.

How hot does your 3600 run now?

Also, if it doesn't work well, there are things you could do, like reducing the PPT, TDC, EDC settings, to make the 5800X consume less power without losing much performance, and in typical gaming workloads, it's not going to consume much more power than your current CPU anyway. I've tried daily driving my 5900X at "65W TDP" values (88 PPT, 60 TDC, 90 EDC) just to see how it does and I get about 85% of the multicore performance with no loss in single core performance. I don't even notice a difference in games.

    Same thing, different fans.
With the Duo tho you get two fans and they're fairly quiet. I'd definetily go with the Duo.

The only reason I went with a Noctua NH-D15 is because it's black and can be mounted in two orientations on AM4.
    Same with the U12S.

Thanks for this! So I guess the Arctic is outperforming the Noctua up until when it's 100% fan speed but that's not even realistic in my case given that I'll mostly be gaming. However it'll be a bit louder since the fans of the Arctic are at a higher RPM.. interesting maybe Noctua isn't really a good value after all.

I had the 34 Duo on my Ryzen 3600 first, kept the temps down nicely around 65c on a stress test. It's on my 9400f now which maxes out at 59c in stress test.

I can't compare it to the Noctua as I've never had one but it certainly does the job!

Here's the NH-D15 which is about $90. It is one of the best air coolers, why not spend another $30 and get the best air cooler money can buy instead of fiddling around with these mid tier coolers for 60-70$?

    Help us all.

Everyone Likes to beat on the Hyper 212/evo, its a great cooler and for the price is awesome... sure it is a FEW degrees off the nocuta and dark rock but it's... Half?(maybe) the price. If money is a concern and you're not overclocking more than midly (which should be the case with any of these coolers), the 212 is the performance per dollar winner. If you want the best performance... IMO get a bigger tower cooler for money similar to the NH-U12S. if you can fit these coolers you can probably fit a much larger cooler in the same space like a NH-D15.

i'll throw some tests up here, you can go find your own if you like, we all have opinions, many are crap... but they're ours none the less.

here's some charts since I haven't seen any to go along with opinions yet.

Hyper 212 is 2.6C warmer than the dark rock and $24.95 less dough.

Hyper 212 is 5C warmer than the nh-u12s and $35(Half) less.

I guess in this case the 212 is the inferior cooler? I haven't bought it yet because they're not in stock yet but once I do I think I'll get the NH-U12S which is probably robust enough to last me through upgrades as well.
