I will be the first to tell you guys, I do not use anywhere near the 32gb in my NAS using ZFS raid. Now I do not do any heavy reads/writes so that may be just my situation. I have 32gb because I am a hardware nut and wanted it

My Linus Tech Tips shirt shipped out yesterday, as well as many others! I wanted to start a thread for all of the community (or anybody  ) that has a LTT shirt, or any LTT swag.

I wanted everyone to share pictures (G-Rated  ) of their new favorite shirt, and show the LTT crew how much we appreciate and enjoy their content and hard work!!

Mine should be here Monday, I will post it up asap!

I run 10 of these drives and I've only had one fail in the entire time I've had them (maybe 6 months or so?). It was one of those early failures within the first few weeks that I believe is common to any new drive.

I personally do not care about 24/7 validation or high IO specifications of any kind for general home storage - instead I recommend buying multiple of the cheapest drives and running them in redundant configuration.

Bobert got a reaction from Vitalius in To anyone that has fears of ZFS performance issues:
I am using ZFS raid on my NAS running on a Z77 platform and Windows 7.
I used an Asrock Extreme 6 because of its 8 sata ports and I have all of them filled up.
I am also getting great performance over my gigabit connection, and I am assuming you only added an HBA because you didn't have enough sata ports, or was it for a different reason?

I also have 2 HD7870s with full cover blocks from EK and EK backplates and I love the look. I did not do it for the performance aspect, but mainly for the aesthetics aspect. I personally would say it is not 100% worth it, from a performance standpoint.

I also had this concern but I can say now, after having it setup, that it works great! I have 8 drives spanning across an Intel and Asmedia controller and they are working great in ZFS.

Two 120hz if you can spring it, play your games on one monitor even if you get multiple.
Speaking from my own experience, once you go triple display you can't go back. I don't use it for eyefinity but having all the space when I'm doing research/referencing multiple documents is invaluable.

    HS: Corsair H80
    RAM: 32gb Crucial 1600mhz
    SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 240gb

    HDD 2: 4x 3TB Toshiba DT01ACA300 (7200rpm 64mb cache, 1tb platters)

    Total Capacity: 21.24TB

    Software and Configuration:
My server is running Windows 7 Ultimate along with FlexRAID to configure the RAID setup.
I am using all 7 drives in a raid 6 like array. I have 2 drives for redundancy and the rest as storage.
They all seem to run around ~35 degrees which keeps me content, especially considering they are in such a tight area.

    Usage:
I use the storage for all of my media such as movies, tv shows, pictures, music, etc. I have it connected to my gigabit network and I access it from my htpc and main desktop.

    Backup:
I currently have about 95% of my important data backed up to an external 3tb seagate drive, and I have another 3.5" 3tb drive that I plan to do a backup to and leave dormant.

    Additional info:
I chose this platform for it's flexibility and robustness. The motherboard was chosen because of it's 8 sata ports which was exactly what I needed. I decided to go with software raid because it gives me all the speed I need at a not-too-bad price, since it is simply a media server. I also recently wired up my entire house with ethernet (that was tons of fun) so I could have this NAS/server sit in my spare bedroom and not have to touch it.

    Photo's:

This is the NAS, sitting under my desk currently. My main computer is in the 900D above it. I am going to be moving the NAS to the spare bedroom this week, since I just wired it up with ethernet.

I tried to do cable management decently well, it is a pet peeve of mine. (I *almost* sleeved these cables, if only it had a window!)

I was going to add an 8th 3tb drive but had absolutely no need to, so I threw the SSD down there.

    How it sits currently..

I also have a 3tb drive in my desktop and another 3tb drive in my htpc for random local files. But I know they do not count, being in different computers.

I don't understand everyone's answer of 'no' so quickly. If he holds off the overclocking, as he said, then it's very doable. It all depends on what size rads they are tbh and how much actual radiator space you have.
Stay on stock clocks, disable one titan if possible, and even if you can't, then I think you will be fine. Monitor your temps and keep an eye on things and you'll either be fine or catch an issue before it damages anything. It's not like your cpu or titans are going to fry as soon as you turn it on.
I have a slightly different setup that I ran fanless on BOTH rads under stress testing and never went above 70c... 3930k, dual 7870s, 480mm ut60, and 360mm ut60.
    Try it and post results.
