Thread got bumped, time for story time with Senpai!

I haven't had much time with tech illiterates as I've moved schools and am in a much techier place now. But that doesn't mean I don't have any gold.

I was selling my buddy an AM3 PC for next to nothing since I literally had it sitting around, and couldn't sell it to anybody even at the next to nothing price I was asking. I had bought it for $20 only because it had an AIO in it I robbed for my main system. I had my buddy (who isn't very good at tech) look up how to install a Hyper 212 evo and do it, as I was busy and wouldn't have been able to do it for weeks if not months. He installs it, and the system stops posting.

He texts me saying that he did as the video said, and it wasn't posting. I'm like aight, his moms car is pretty bad and probably shook stuff around. I tell him to remove the RAM and CPU, and reseat both, and to watch videos on how to do both.

Still isn't posting. So I tell him to hold tight and i'd drive over when I get the chance.

Drive over, check the system out. All looks good, I pull the cooler off and the CPU falls off and on to my hand. I knew the socket on the board was a lil weak so I go to put it in thinking all is well, but it doesn't go in all the way.

I kid you not, every pin was bent. Every. Fucking. Pin.

I order a new CPU, offering to pay for it myself, and come back next week to install it.

Cpu comes in, board still isn't posting. Now, the board is dark as is his room, so I couldn't see this until I grabbed my phone's flashlight to check for fuckups.

The entire PCB around the mobo is cracked. Stress fractures everywhere. I just put the system down and took a walk. Came back and had to break the news that he fucked it bad.

Sadly I didn't have another AM3 board, so the sale fell through and I payed him back for the cooler since he couldn't return it.

Aaaand from that point on I never let a customer touch their own system before they pay for it.

My mom is on board with it, and my father is the type to stick to an opinion till his grave even if he knows damn well its wrong one. So, Im just gonna go fi with my mom and let my dad overpay for verizon and the 12GB he doesn't use (his data usage consists of browsing craigslist while waiting outside thrift shops for me and my mother who both run online resale shops. He insists on going despite having 0 reason to.)

Just had a rich one with my parents the other night. Tried to talk them into Google Fi, since it seems to have better reliable coverage in the areas I travel to (I'm the only one with a long commute ATM). Currently they're overpaying for Verizon, and 12GB is NOT enough for 3 people when 2 of us have online businesses to run while simultaneously doing other stuff.

My father does not listen well. He's a stubborn italian man with hearing loss.

5 minutes in and he was convinced beyond convincing that Google Fi required all of us to purchase a Pixel 3/Pixel 3XL, for $800 (I didn't catch which.)

No, we not would need new phones. None of us purchased unlocked phones, but my father will continue to babble on about how unlocking your phones yourself never works after dealing with some crackhead shopping mall phone companies in the mall he used to manage.

So yep. You heard it here first people. You cant carrier-unlock phones and Google Fi requires Pixel 3's!

SenKa got a reaction from drppr in Linus misses the mark on why iOS / Apple is not as good as Android
I said this in another thread, and I think it's suited here too.

So long as you play by apples rules, and use their devices the way they intend for them to be used, it is a damned near flawless system. iOS is beautiful so long as you don't ask too much of it, macOS is genuinely years ahead of windows in terms of management and stability (as I write this i am dealing with one of my devices BSOD boot looping once before booting and being stable. This happened randomly with no correlation to updates/hardware changes. Never seen a KP in my life on macOS.), and the integration between all devices is better than Windows will ever be, even when MS had the chance to take the cake with Windows Mobile. It was so damned close!

I would probably invest in it a hell of a lot more if:

The Macbook Pro would stay cool (since I would bootcamp to windows and game with an EGPU, macOS for school.)
iOS was usable for any length of time before wanting to throw an iPhone into the nearest pit to hell. I could even overlook the need for a "Random crap" folder (since I also need one for my Note 8 ) if I could atleast sort my applications with empty tiles!

Those are my two big issues. There is certianly an "Apple tax", but it's not as much as it once was or is made out to be, and I would be more than willing to pay it. I don't really use apps outside the G Play store, nor do I need anything that doesn't exist on iOS. Hell, some usecases (and ones I have often) work better on macOS, like Carbon Copy Cloner being far superior to anything on Windows, FCP for editing, Logic X... So on.

As for your points regarding security. Apple is really no better than google. Seriously. Apple, though they may collect more info, may actually more secure now than Google is.

Default apps... yeah, I don't know how apple has gotten away with it.

The price premium for app devs is under scrutiny as I write, and will likely hopefully be changed soon.

The settings app... Don't remind me, I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to set a simple setting because it was buried in the most non-sensible place ever. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was something really stupid. But if I used iOS more regularly I would likely get used to it. Android's storage management has gotten worse over the years (atleast in the Samsung Experience UI. Haven't used a different phone in a while), and it is slowly pushing me away.

That's all your points touched, in my own opinion of course. I hope this thread doesnt derail into apple fanboys bitching at you. You put lots of thought into your post.

SenKa got a reaction from Eastman51 in What if...: Windows Mobile.
Let's pretend for a second that Windows Mobile didn't have a bunch of random crashing issues, that it had 0 dev support and that they picked questionable partners to produce their phones. Look at the OS at face value and imagine...

This is what I wish would have happened with Windows Mobile, and I hope MS is bringing it back in some form (rumored they are).

    Small changes:
A cloud based sync-to-desktop system like iOS/macOS integration (and just as smooth). This is probably the biggest flaw in Windows for those of us who use their phones as tools rather than toys.
Non-Tile UI. It was always horrid to look at or use, reminds me of Windows 8... Eugh...
A DeX-Style docking ecosystem, but with less proprietary-ness (more on this below) that allows proper continue-what-you-were-doing, which MS currently implements with android but it doesn't work very well...

    Bigger changes:
Re-Do Windows Mobile to X86 with ULP Atom processors (or SD 855, now that Windows 10 on ARM is a thing.). This would nullify the need for apps to be supported on yet another OS, and would simply require apps to scale to a ~7" screen. The only app I know currently with stubborn scaling is the Discord desktop app. This would have nullified the largest issue of Windows mobile.
Aforementioned "DeX" would just drop you on a lightened Windows 10 desktop with full X86 app support. Performance would be similar to that of a Surface 3/Surface Go/GPD Win. Not fast, but perfectly usable.
Phones would be marketed towards the rugged/business market. Devices would be thicker with larger batteries, all-day-ish battery life. utility orientated feature set (dual SIM, SD card expansion, removable batteries. Maybe Mag-style to avoid breaking clips on a back cover? This would likely be too thick with current battery tech...)

TB3 is limited to 4 PCI-E lanes, where a high end GPU would be notably bottlenecked at anything below 8X (8 PCI-E lanes). So you're kind of stuck with the performance you have

SenKa got a reaction from Scorpio 72472 in "future proofing" a taboo?
Future proofing is by and large a sham. But, it is true that buying like- an i9-7980XE, 128GB RAM, and quad Titan RTX's will hold up longer to raw compute workloads better than your run of the mill 6core, 16GB RAM, mid-tier GPU system.

Gaming is a very different story, but even then it would likely stand up longer, so long as the X86 instruction set doesnt die. And I don't think anybody thinks it will.

WD Red's are overkill for home use, but that isn't a horrible thing.

They last forever, I've had great experiences with them. I recently purchased an EasyStore 8TB to shuck the drive out of (which is cheaper, since Easystores go on sale often. I found a killer deal. The high capacity Easystore's use WD Whites, which are WD Reds.). The only issue with shucking is you usually need to tape off Pin 3 on the power connector or use a molex to sata power adapter.

Good luck on your WD Red!

Then try the oven method, which should reflow the whole card. It will likely fix the issue temporarily, if it comes back the GPU core is bad. If it stays fine, it was simply a cracked solder joint (likely if the card experienced a physical shock).
