I‘ve got a 5.25“ Tape Drive that I regularly use to backup my server

Well every PC I have has at least one 5.25" bay. Out of the 7 PCs I have only my secondary PC doesn't have a DVD drive since I don't have a spare SATA DVD drive and it doen't have IDE. My main PC even has a 3.5" bay which is used for the SSD (put it there due to PSU cables) and it does actually have a floppy drive as well (it's USB since there are no internal floppy connectors). My other 5 PCs all have both a CD or DVD drive and a floppy drive. While I rarely use them, I still like to have it ready to go when I need it. Actually the cases of my Main and Secondary PCs have built-in memory card reades and on my other PCs I don't need them anyway. Fan controllers I do not use (either the fan is controlled by the motherboard or it's just running at max speed). I don't need to add USB ports since I use 1 or max 2 at the same time. Would like to have an internals monitor for temps, etc. but my Main PC (where I'd put it) has only one 5.25" bay already occupied by a DVD drive.

Not only do I still have a 5 1/4 bay for a DVD/BD writer, but I have a 3.5" one containing a memory card reader.

It's getting really, really hard to find decent cases that have at the very least one 5 1/4 bay let alone two of them... and with an adapter panel for a 3.5" hole. 99% of every case these days is designed to barely hold anything and is full of shitty RGB.

Yeah, I know, I'll probably be saving money for the actual monitor though hahaha

Ok, I'll give you that. ? Still, they are comments I hear or read frequently which are not true (my name is Jeannie).

I’m the guy in the video. I said it facetiously, I still use disk drives.

I have several of those, including spares since their latches are prone to breakage. Mine also came with little trays that slide along the top of the drawer sides. They are handy little things for keeping little "bits and bobs", such as USB dongles and thumb drives, adapters, charging cables, etc.

One comment the guy in the video made is a common one that irritates me; "no one uses disk drives anymore." Aside from me wishing people would stop calling me "No One" or "Nobody", methinks this thread has proven that comment to be dead wrong. We may be in a minority, but there are people who still use ODDs. I use mine for ripping music CDs (still the best and, often, least expensive source of high quality music with proper tagging), DVDs, and BDs (the best source of high quality movies for movies, much better and more reliable than streaming and often less expensive, especially if one buys used or from bargain tables).

Then there are the various uses for the bays themselves. One that wasn't mentioned was reservoirs for water cooling.

I get your points, but I'd like to bring some nuances :
To me, the point of having an internal stats monitor on the front of my case is exactly so that I don't need software and close my game or minimize it when I want to see the stats, they are just there, waiting to be read. (Along with the fact I am a gadget nerd and I love the look of a well-designed monitor of that kind on a case) I personally don't like dongles, so if I need a card reader, I'd prefer it to be integrated into my case: it avoids having a messy desktop with all the dongles I would need for the cards I use and if I ever move my pc, I don't forget anything, it just follows. The same argument would apply to my Bluray drive. I watch BluRays rather regularly as it is my only BluRay reader (less expensive and I can then copy the movie to my raspberry pi in the lounge if I want to watch the movie somewhere else) As for the rest, I agree, the other options are sufficient to me, but I can imagine some use cases requiring more USB ports on the front of the computer or controlling the fan manually instead of having to change the profile in software for the fans or the lighting of the case.

I was dead set on having 5.25" drive bays on my first build, but have since moved away from it since pretty much every option that was listed has a USB or software alternative now. For example:
Internal stats: software or those little LCD displays that people put inside their case Optical drive: USB (USB optical drives seem to be much much quieter as well) Memory card reader: USB Fan/RGB controller: Fanhub and software USB Ports: Dongles/hubs/PCI-E cards (Although not on the front) DIY Projects: I've got nothing for that one I'm sure there is an argument to be made here but this is what works for me, specifically because things like optical dives, card readers, and USB hubs can be moved to laptops and other computers easily. I also prefer the 'clean' look of the case and USB items can just be thrown in a drawer after use.

If I had another SATA port on my motherboard/PSU, I'd totally still have an optical drive in my daily. One of my longer-term plans for my XP rig after I get the main upgrades done (Enthoo Pro M, graphics card, RAM, and round IDE/floppy cables) is to try and hunt down a nice IDE DVD-RW laptop drive that doesn't cost as much as a house and one of those things that lets you take a single 5.25 bay and turn it into a slim ODD and 3.5 bay (where I'd install the floppy drive).

Still have a DVD-RW drive, but rarely use it. So rarely in fact that the drive tray starts to stick from time to time when ejecting (thinks something obstructs the tray and cancels and closes tray)

My case is full tower so there's SIX 5.25" slots ... and I actually took advantage of that for a couple of months... i took a pci-e x1 riser adapter thing and placed it on top of the DVD drive and actually plugged a video card in it, with the video connectors of the video card popping out in the front of the case. It worked fine.

Basically, already had 2 RX 570 cards in x16 slots and had another x4 slot on the motherboard but the 3rd card (a RX 470) would have sat with just a few mm between its fans and the power supply grill and therefore lousier cooling... so I moved the video card on top of the optical drive using the riser.

I've got six 5.25 drive bays. They're for HDDs together with this. I've also got two DVD-ROM drives in there, because hell why not.

Sirmyself got a reaction from Origami Cactus in Are Volta charging cables a scam? Magnetic cables comparison and review
The concept of the product is probably a well know one within this community but basically, they sell phone charging cables where the connector tip and the cable are separated and connect together with magnets.

I could test first hand these awesome cables along with different options I could find on massdrop (v3 plugies) and amazon (First2savvv) and here's my personal thoughts about those products. Before I go with my review of the 3 options, note that all 3 support bidirectional plugging and data transfer and boast to support fast-charging, like most magnet cables on the market.

First, the cheapest option : First2savvv is a company based in china that sells pretty much a knockoff version of Volta's cables. The magnet connector is similar (basically the same as I can use them interchangeably) and the options are the same as Volta's. The cables support fast-charge when the LED faces the same way as the screen, they are braided as well and have pretty much the same feel than Volta albeit being slightly more flimsy. The difference with this one is that sweet sweet price tag : 20.98$ CAD for a pair of cable and connector. The connection can easily disconnected if the cable tilts, so you can barely lift your phone and I would recommend to lie the phone on a flat surface or have a kickstand to be able to give a bit of a vertical angle to strengthen the magnet's connection. The cables were sent in a thick felt envelope with an elastic band to close it. It didn't feel cheap nor premium, but it was a nice touch to have a good reception experience. My only issue with this company is that the right angled cable do not fit the plugs for the straight cables making this company actually two options at a time... You either get a straight cable or a right angled one, but both are hardly compatible. The magnets are also on the fragile side. I dropped my phone from a foot high and managed to break the connector. Their return policy is acceptable and they have a limited warranty of 18 months.

Now comes the middle range. I bought the v3 plugies on Massdrop for 31.88$ USD (41.71$ CAD at the time of purchase) with an additional cable. The cable supports bidirectional connection with it's 5 pin cable and 5 pin connector tip configuration. The connector is kind of ugly looking on a device though since the connection part is sort of a notch sticking out of the magnet by about 1mm. The connection with the magnets is strong enough when the cable still lies on a surface, but if the edge of the surface, the weight of the cable may sometimes disconnect the cable from the connector. The cables are braided and solid and have a beautiful and shiny silver color if you're into it. I could select between micro-usb / usb type c / lightning connectors and like I said, there was an option to add a cable. On the website, there is an option for a right angled cable which seems to be totally compatible with their straight version,  but I can't test them. I could find no warranty information whatsoever either on the massdrop page nor on the website, so I would assume their offer is either similar to first2savvv or inexistant in that matter for now. I didn't like them much compared to the First2savvv cables, so I gave them to my mother and she is using on her tablet and she does like the product. Their main strong point compared to the other ones though is that it have a really good grip even if the cable dangles with an angle.

Finally comes the main attraction : Volta. Those cable cost 23.00$ USD (31.02$ CAD) for a single cable with 2 connector tips with an option to add a cable for 16$ USD (for a total of 52.59$ CAD). That price tag is justified by their lifetime warranty where you only pay for shipping fees (other conditions apply, but most of the time, you pay for shipping each first time you replace something). the rest is basically the same as First2Savvv, but a little better: Bidirectional 5 pin cables on a 10 pin magnet connector tip, same 3 connector options, braided cables, fast charge support, interchangeability between the connector tips and both the right angled cable and straight cable. They also have a super nice customer service since they have an actual web site unlike first2savvv which will communicate through amazon. My only complain is that it had pretty much the same issue than First2savvv's cable : the magnet has a hard time holding its grip when the force applied to the cable is not absolutely straight inline with the connector. The connection is stronger than First2savvv's, but the cable still disconnects if it does not lie on a flat surface or if it doesn't have a vertical angle.

Bottom line, Are the Volta cable a scam compared to other options? I'd say no. You pay a bigger price for a bigger user experience. Buying from first2savvv will save you  a buck, but with their shorter warranty and slightly lower product quality for their connector, you may end up buying more cables rather than cheaply replacing your faulty parts, which may result in a higher amount of many spent. I also broke 2 connectors from my First2savvv set and when I came to buy the tips, I HAD to buy the cables as well, so there is no replacement options here. Volta has a better customer service and more flexibility for your orders and you pay for both the product and the customer experience. For the Plugies, I didn't like them but my mother did, so basically it depends on your personal taste, but don't rely on the computer generated pictures where the connector is flat, the connection part is not and you can see actual pictures of the connector on the product page.

first2savvv : amazon canada amazon US (I could only find the straight cable on the US site and there seem to only have a USB type C connector option. Maybe wil will have more time or luck than me to check)
Plugies : Massdrop official plugies website
    Volta : Volta official website

    Note :
All prices above include taxes and shipping fees if applicable (shown price is actual price I paid) I will update this review in a while, I just got my fast-charging block and I could not test the fast-charge support for the cables yet.
