foxhound590 reacted to CharlieSheather in So my pump caught fire...
    Hi guys, a short story for you;

Last week I took my desktop with me to do some on site web development in a town a few hours away. I've hauled my desktop around with me a lot in the last few years (having been at university) so I had no problems packing it or during the trip. After I got there I promptly set up my computer and screens and turned it on, then went into a meeting. (a note; my pump is a DDC with and EK x-res top)

About half an hour later (still in the meeting) we noticed an electrical / plastic burning smell. We search around for a few minutes and narrowed it down to near my computer. The smell seemed to be stronger down near my computer to I pulled off my side panel just in time to see a plume of smoke shoot out of the side of the pump!

I quickly ripped out the power cable and then everything else and grabbed my case, rushing to a table outside. With the side panel still off, more smoke was coming from the pump. Luckily I had a drain valve installed, so I opened it up and just let the water run out onto the table outside. I ran back inside looking for something to get the pump out of my system (now smoking even more furiously). I spotted a kitchen knife, grabbed it and ran back outside. The knife was surprisingly sharp so it didn't take much to cut through the tubing either side of the pump. The pump was secured to the case with double sided foam tape so I just grabbed onto the res, tore it out of the case and threw it into the back yard.

    After another couple of minutes the pump had stopped smoking, so I went over to it to inspect;

The base of the pump case was melted a bit (you can also see some smoke in the top right of the photo below).

I then opened up the pump case.

Close up of the area that was burning.

    Pump;

I needed to get back up and running asap and as there was no local pc shops, closest one was 5 hours drive away, I decided to head down to the hardware store and grab a pond pump and some more distilled water. I got both for $40 which was cheaper than I thought.

As pond pumps usually require being submerged, I filled a container outside the case with the water and attached the pump. Although there was not much flow it worked very well.

The bottles in the container are filled with tap water and are there to raise the level of the distilled water above the top of the pond pump.

Edit: I forgot to say that luckily everything else survived.

So has anyone else had something like this happen to them?

PS. New pump is here so the re-build log coming soon...

    Cheers
    Charlie

My bro is 8 and I would let him play, simply because he can distinguish between real life and a game and does not get sucked in. Both me and my brother have grown up in a house hold that looks down upon saying words like "crap", let alone misbehaviour. So we never feel the need to swear or do anything wrong. If I were you though, I wouldn't let him play, simply because you have concers and worry, and since you know him better than us all, I'd say your worry is justified and you take the necessary action to keep him safe.

    OP says 9
You need to talk to your parent(s) or Guardian(s) as they are the only ones that have the right to say if he can play it or not.
Personally I wouldn't let my Children play it until they are over 12 or 13, and even then they wouldn't be allowed to play it without my supervision until they were 18.

foxhound590 reacted to looney in How to: Install and setup FlexRAID on your windows storage system.
    What is FlexRAID?
FlexRAID is a paid software RAID solution, it is multiplatform but you will mostly find it on windows systems. it uses “snapshot” RAID opposed to “real-time” RAID, making it suitable for data that does not change very often. In case of a disk failure it will only restore the data that was present during the last snapshot. You can set up your own snapshot schedule.
There are 3 versions of FlexRAID:
    1. Data Protection $40 (no storage pooling)
    2. Storage pooling $30 (no data protection)
    3. Combo $60 (duh, it’s the combo version :P)
This topic is about the Combo version.
NOTE: you can request a 14 day trail version, simply download the installer and follow the tutorial to do so.
    FlexRAID Pro’s and Con’s
Before we start with the tutorial it’s probably a good idea to list the pros and cons of FlexRAID.
    Pros:
    · Existing data on drives stays intact when creating the array/pool.
    · You can expand the array without data loss or rebuilds.
    · Only active disks will spin up (power efficient)
    · Multiplatform
    · Uses NTFS, so if the array fails you will still have your data in NTFS on the disk.
    · Entire files are always stored on a single disk, not spanned across multiple.*
    Cons
    · Speed is the same as a single disk.**
    · Disk load is not balanced.
    · Entire files are always stored on a single disk, not spanned across multiple.*
*As you can see “Entire files are always stored on a single disk, not spanned across multiple” is listed as both a pro and a con, personally I think it’s a pro because there is a smaller chance of corruption.
But others can see it as a con because it may increase the chance of a faulty recovery.
**The speed for transferring a single file is limited to the speed of the single disk that the file is stored on. But the overall data throughput can be larger then a single disk's speed when multiple files on separate disks are in use. So in most cases you will achieve a higher over all data throughput than the single disk speed.
So when should I use FlexRAID and when should I not?
FlexRAID is very well suited for media storage and simple “copy paste” style backups and other data that does not change often.
In that scenario it will be more then fast enough and it will also be very efficient. But as I mentioned before, FlexRAID does not split files, so very large files can cause problems if they are larger than the drives that form the array/pool. It’s also not the fastest RAID solution out there.
    So use it for:
    · Media storage (photo’s, (HD) movies, audio)
    · Copy paste style backups (so not backup images, unless they are small)
    And don’t use it for:
    · Very large files (iSCSI targets, Large VM’S, Large backup images)
    · High I/O (or critical) applications (don’t use snapshot RAID for this)
    And one more thing:
    RAID IS NOT A BACKUP(@alpenwasser)
If you’re not sure that FlexRAID is the right solution for you then then make a post in the storage subsection and ask for advice there ( type @looney in your post to automatically send me a notification of your topic)

Anything that needs firmware or drivers is vulnerable to low-level code attacks. ANYTHING. USB is just one interface, you can do the same on anything that needs drivers, even sata. The thing is that USB is universal, and everyone uses it, so thats why it would be targeted for stuff like this.

The point is, it cannot be fixed. Just like you cant prevent hackers from accessing the internet.
