That model has horrible thermals, horrible qc, and customer service is about on par with razer and dell.

Once infected the system should be considered tainted. No amount of virus scanning software will help.Wipe the drive and reinstall.

Mx4 is the worst thermal paste I have ever tested in bare die applications.
 
On a laptop bare die you want the most viscous thermal paste possible to avoid the pump out effect.

To start off with you are asking the wrong question. The question should be: What do I enjoy doing? Even if you go into a high paying field you can get stuck in an entry level position. If you are not enthusiastic about what you do it shows. This will inherently limit you as to how far you can really go in that field.
 
I would also add if you are burnt out on school or do not feel as if there is a good direction for you take some time off. Work an unskilled or skilled labor position and see what it is really like. Go back to school when you have passion for something and/or feel like there is a good path for you to follow.

True, and battery life doesnt exactly fit the bill, but I was pretty impressed with build quality, and thermals were far from the worst I've seen in this category.

Honestly, just pay the 300 dollar premium and get a decent laptop. You really are making a simple situation way more difficult. At the end of the day by dragging a desktop around and trying to use a cheap laptop and remote desktop function you will have a solution that is janky at best. You will get tired of it not working right and eventually end up buying the laptop anyway.
 
Unless you are performing a task that absolutely cannot be done on a laptop get a laptop. They are made for travel and will save you hours of troubleshooting and headaches.

I would advise against buying a model with poor quality control used. If you are going to buy an xps make sure to buy with warrantee, you are going to need it.

Just please be responsible with any personal or sensitive data left on the computers. I dumpster picked a computer from my old college (if you can call it a college) and it had on it hundreds of full resumes that had DOB, address, references, relations, school transcripts, SS numbers, so on and so forth. Literally everything you'd want or need to steal the identities of hundreds of people was sitting next to a dumpster behind a school for the taking. I put a rock hammer through that hard drive a couple times and tossed it into the recycling bin as soon as I realized what was on it. I've picked a few other PC's from the trash and ran into similar situations, if I'm planning to keep the HDD I wipe it with something like eraser but I usually just destroy the drive.
 
Also, please when you're throwing out a computer take the HDD out and physically render it inoperative however you'd like. Puncturing the case an platters will usually suffice.

It has standard mounting holes, and drivers are very easy to find. The front i/o is that 30 pin connector down at the bottom. Without a factory front io panel you cannot get through post without overriding several warnings. The pin pitch is not standard, so you cannot just plug front io in period. The power switch is a wonderful little 5 pin plug that requires a factory power switch or at least the cable in order to hook a power switch up.

Pretty much everything in the top 50 performers will perform within a degree or two of each other.
 
On a desktop processor above the IHS just pick the one you are most comfortable with.

If you are buying the system new and expect to retain warrantee just pay for the option and have them do it.
 
As for using a high performance thermal compound in a laptop, there is a reason manafacturers do not use high perfomance compounds. In bare die applications they tend to "pump out" from the center of the die rather rapidly. Manafacturers tend to use a thicker paste that favors longevity over thermal properties.
 
It pretty much comes down to live with poor thermal performance, that will remain poor, but more consistent. Or choose a higher performance thermal paste and expect to reapply once a year.

Not often I get to say this, but it's a pretty good choice. If you are willing to wait 2-3 weeks thermal grizzly carbonaut is supposed to be coming out and is supposed to be non conductive and last indefinitely.

As a general rule I install the most recent nvidia driver. It has caused some issues sometimes and I've had to roll back to an older version, but that happens with anything.
 
For every other device I use the driver off of the laptop manufacturers website, if for no other reason than it is easier.

No way the guy is touching a soldering iron for 75 bucks.
 
My guess is he didnt really troubleshoot it and is replacing the charging port or power brick. On your model the charging port is clipped in.

* to be clear, I don't hate on Apple for the same reasons the masses do - in fact, I dearly miss having an iPad and am patiently waiting for an iPad Mini refresh, if it ever happens. However, manufacturers that design products to be non-repairable throwaway devices, or devices where repairs are so expensive you may as well dispose them anyway, are just asinine & idiotic from a consumer standpoint.
I totally understand the business decision behind it - sell the consumer a brand new device, even if we could have designed it to be repairable in the first place. But this is absolutely NOT sustainable in terms of our pocketbooks, let alone the environment on our planet, so I stand by my statement of hatred towards companies that don't think about the long term picture, and recommend you only purchase products that have been properly designed too.

Honestly thunderbolt is the only reliable egpu method. Even expresscard can be flaky.
 
The mini pci adapters most of the time either just dont work or need an unlocked bios to work.
 

It is wonderful that you reccomend this reseller, quite frankly if you are going to buy online, which I highly reccomend against for a laptop right now, they are good. However repasting is not the answer for bad thermals. Most non conductive high performance pastes suffer from pump out, which means more frequent reapplication than the factory goo. Liquid metal reacts with aluminum quickly and copper slowly degrading the heatsink.
 
To shorten reccomend a model with a proper cooling solution, not a reseller dealing a half assed effort to mitigate improper engineering by the manafacturer.

Mine is 1050 4gb. Keep in mind my primary use is not gaming.

Walmart has the pavilion gaming with 1050ti for 648 right now on special. Thermals are trash. Build quality is plasticky, but it fits budget.

I should have read your post better. I thought you were looking more for an enclosure kit. The arcade1up kits are a very cheap premade cabinet with good aftermarket support. The cheap single core board can be replaced with an old pc, raspberry pi, or old laptop very easily.
 
 
This video was super helpful. Ignore the raspberry pi set up section and replace that with your old pc and front end of your choice. He covers basic setup of usb encoders, buttons, joystick. The section where he installs the LCD controller board can be used to use leftover displays from old laptops etc. The arcade1up cabinet can be replaced with anything even a cardboard box. The basic information there still holds true.

Mine is 1050 4gb. Keep in mind my primary use is not gaming.
