Hi All! my name is Freddy, a.k.a. SKULLCRU5H3R   , between my game-friends. I'm new to the forum/webpage but a long follower on YouTube way before linustechtips, since linus NCIX early days, but between work and studies never got to time to join this community, but since studies are over now i have more time to spare and do things i love besides working.

Second thing i want to say is that english is not my native language, spanish is, and i don't like/trust google translate to do my work since i studied english, so i try my best always, and i don't get mad if someone corrects me on something since i'm still learning more as everyday passes, but enough with that.

Pardon me for being so rude, i haven't told you more than my name, well, here it goes: I''m from a small country on the caribbean called Dominican Republic, specifically from the city called Santiago, i recently turned 30 years old this month, but i'm a kid at heart. I love games, computers and tech since i grew up playing nintendo games and almost every other console until i built my first pc when i was 14 years old, since then i don't play much attention to consoles but still own a xbox 360 that is collecting dust in a box somewhere in a  closet. PC Master Race FTW!

As you can see in my pc list, not the fastest of the world, and old videocard, but until i save more money and get a better one i'll have to get by, since here the salary is so low and a video cards are so expensive, when stores get something that is worth buying is usually 100-180 dollars more   equivalent in my currency, that's why i try to find deals on ebay or get a new one on amazon when i save some money.

Enough with the rant...  I'll try to be more active and helpful to others since i got some knowledge on PCs and hardware and i like to think i can help others like i help some friends and i even built them gaming PCs and help them with advice on some other tech. They call me the geek over here in my city, but i'm just a guy that reads too much on internet and got 80% of my knowledge from it, the rest from experience. Well i think i wrote too much of a Hi  so have a nice day and i'll see you on the forums.

Back in 1997 I worked as an upgrade technician at a Computer City store (owned by Tandy Corporation was similar to CompUSA), here's a few quickies:

1.) Lady brought in her computer for a ZIP drive installation, we were required to check out the condition of a system before accepting it for any work so we couldn't be blamed for pre-existing damage. Upon opening the case one of the RAM sticks fell out. Turns out she broke the memory bracket while installing the memory herself and then wedged a piece of cardboard between 2 sticks to try and hold the memory in the broken slot in place.

2.) Guy had a monitor that was overheating, pretty common issue with cheap CRT monitors from China at the time. He brought the monitor in to see if the repair department could fix it. His temporary solution for trying to prevent it from overheating was to drill holes all over the case, cutout the left side of the case, and duct tape a small $10 box fan from K-Mart to the side. I asked him where he bought the fan and went out and bought one for myself that weekend. Handy fella though!

3.) Young lady in her mid-20's came in and begged me to help her shop for a laptop as she knew the sales people would just prey on her and sell her something she didn't need. I asked her the usual questions such as what she had been using, what she needed the new laptop to do, what features she was most interested in, etc... Found the best model that met all her needs and cost $300 less than most of the other laptops. She bought it and then came back that weekend with her baby, Mom, and Dad and wanted to introduce me to them as the "hero" that helped her find the perfect laptop (she was very happy with it).

4.) A few years after leaving Computer City I was doing some in-home repair work for a client and after repairing her Windows ME system she insisted that her teenage son take me up to his room and play PS2 games with me. She figured her son would benefit spending time with a gamer that had made a career out of fixing computers in an effort to get her son interested in the same career.  We played Gran Turismo 2.

5.) Just a few years ago I was on the phone providing some remote support to a female remote sales worker, she was so overjoyed with how easy the whole process was to have the issue fixed (I was using a 3rd party remote desktop tool to take care of everyhing) that she yelled out loud: "I LOVE YOU"! The phone went silent and then I heard her husband laughing his ass off and she apologized saying she was caught up in the moment.

One nice thing about fixing people's computers is over the years I've gotten: 2x-3x the money I asked for, fresh baked cookies, beef jerky, a bottle of whiskey, and plenty of laughs.

One day my family went to BestBuy to pick out a new router to go with our fancy new internet. We looked through their slection and chose one. But my dad was confused on why the $60 one was any better than the $15 one, I tried to explain that this was better in EVERY WAY, but he still couldn't grasp why dual-band was good. It's safe to say he is the only person in the family who still belives if was a bad idea.
I'm a shy person and not really interested in helping non-techies in very public situations. One day in class, the teacher was trying to hook up a projector but couldn't figure out that it conects via VGA, and I sat in the back of the class and giggled to myself as multiple people tried and failed over and over, but I was content to stit anddonothingthe whole class. Does that make me a terrible person?

A women and her two daughters came into the phone repair shop I worked in. Both the daughters had ipod touch's and said that they couldn't install any apps because ios firmware was out of date and asked us to fix it for them. We simply updated the ipods through itunes. We charged them 40 dollars each.

    hmm experiences with non techies?
well i helped my grandmother find a new laptop for her. When we got the new computer home to her i helped her setting it up and showed her the most important stuff. Later that week she ,called me and told me to "come fix the cup holder" on her computer and then hang up. I figured she was just confused or something considering that she is 76. So i walked to her, when i came in and she showed me her computer, it turned out that she had been using her cd drive for a cup holder for her coffee, she had then managed to spill the coffee over the laptop.
long story short, don't buy your grandmother a computer with a cd drive, it can end badly.

oh, oh I have a good one, my sisters "tech master" boyfriend said that minecraft is a huge virus and that it is a problem on their laptop, (it is installed so my niece can play on my server) he says that the connection to my server in installing viruses and keeps uninstalling minecraft, but he never even looks twice at the limewire they use to get music and videos. and they don't even run any antivirus, they uninstalled the free version of avg I put on their laptop because it was a virus too according to him.

I have a sort of funny story:
My grandad has a laptop and doesn't really know much about computers (only how to go on the Internet and to play steam games). He had norton on it that kept telling him to backup his hdd, so ha called up my auntie to sort it out for him. It turns out that what she actually did was somehow tell norton to back up his c:/ drive, to the c:/ drive! When I highlighted this to her, explaining that it was completely pointless, she just shrugged and told me he had plenty of space... Crazy!

occasionally i like going into my local pc world and watch there sales team sell low end pc's at inflated prices and listen to the patter they use to sell em...
then when they go to get there payment plans or some other bits and bobs, i walk over and tell em to look on the web for better hardware at the same or lesser price...
reason?... because it sickens me to see people deliberately being ripped of because they dont know the difference between a gts 450 and a gtx 680. 1 guy was gonna pay £145 for a cheap end gfx card which retailed elsewhere for £79.99 (gts 650) thinking it was cool because he had just been told it had 2 gigs of vram. i pointed out that the vram has little to do with overall performance and he needs to know how many cuda cores the card has. i then pointed him to a cheaper 660 gtx from ebuyer only 1 gig. he walked away happy but the salesman wasnt. i got escorted out the shop and told not to return lol....

A couple of years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to look inside a computer, the bad thing was, it was the pc which every person in the house used to do his or her work on.
After looking for a couple of minutes i somehow decided that it would be a good idea to get the heatsink of the graphics card and put my finger on the actual chip to feel if it was hot, by doing that the thermal paste sticked to my finger and burnt so hard i had a big blister on it for more than a week. Second bad thing was the fact that the graphics card died so i had to tell my parents. instead of telling them what actually happened I told them that probably the fan of the heatsink got stuck and that would be why it was broken. My dad decided it was time for a new for a new PC anyways so a wee later we had a new pc in the livingroom:P
I Still think it wasn't worth the pain but yeah.. a new PC is never a bad thing...
Lesson I learned of this, never remove the heatsink of a chip while the machine is running...

so this one time I was hanging out with my friend who is the manager at a tech shop by where I live and a girl comes in and buys a 2tb hard drive. we let her know that we install hard drives for $1 (the cost of the sata cable we use) and she says "just because I am a woman does not mean I cant work on computers" and leaves in a huff. two days later she comes back in saying that the HDD is not working so we take the computer in to look at it, we open it and the HDD is nowhere to be seen, so we ask her where it is. and it turns out that she scanned it and put the scanned image on her desktop to install the drive. and to top that off she threw away the drive she paid almost $200 for and she wanted us to give her a new one.
