I thought about a similar build, but the Athlon CPU can't even be compared to any modern i5.

He already has all of that stuff, so that's not a big deal.

The reason that the cables are such a mess is that this case has ZERO cable management room, especially behind the motherboard tray. I am also terrible at cable managment, so this was the best I could do with my attention span.

If I were to put more time into it, I could probably make it a bit nicer, but I'm way to lazy, and it's not going to be used that much anyway, so it's not that big a deal.

(By the way, love the Top Gear gif)

I actually had a Radeon 7950 with that CPU for about a month (was one of the parts I moved to my new system), but the CPU bottlenecked it so much (even at 3.4 Ghz) that it really bothered me. While the CPU was at 100% load, the GPU was around 30%.

Don't worry, you're both great. As you can tell from my pic, I am very much a Top Gear fan. That's why I had to acknowledge the Top Gear gif. I don't pick favorites!!!

I figured out what it was. For some reason, it would not accept an overclock unless I had dual channel RAM in the mobo. I was running it with 3 of 4 slots filled. Once I filled the 4th slot or had only 2 slots filled, it would accept the overclock just fine.

Why the i7? Do you do Adobe or Autodesk at school?

This is a new PC that I am building to take to college (University for those of you not in the US) with me next semester. I wanted this system to be relatively powerful, yet somewhat compact, with room for future expansion.

    Parts:
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k (Have)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5 (Have)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (Have)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600 (Red) (Ordered)
SSD: SanDisk Ultra Plus 256GB (Have)
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB (Ordered)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon 7950 (Have)
    Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D (Ordered)
    Power Supply: Corsair CX500

    Rational
CPU: Even though I am just going to be using this system for gaming, I went with the i7 over the i5 because I was able to get the i7 for the exact same price as the i5, so I figured it was worth it for a bit of (excuse the words) future proofing.
SSD: I bought this SSD over any other one because it was on sale and was only $100 for 256GB.
Video Card: I bought this card off of a friend for cheap (yes it was used for mining, but it is still under warranty and he will take care of it if the card dies), and I don't need anything better yet. Once the GTX 800 series comes out, I might upgrade.
Case: I really like Obsidian cases, and I wanted something RELATIVELY small, so it was perfect.
Power Supply: It may seem like, in comparison to the rest of the parts in this system, the PSU is kind of low end, and the reason for that is because I purchased it about a month ago for a different system that I ended up not using, so I am going to use this PSU until I need more power.

I will be posting more pictures once the rest of the parts come in, but for now, here are the CPU, motherboard, and SSD:

I figured it out. It had something to do with the statistics server included with MSI Afterburner. With that uninstalled, it ran fine.

Based off of the replies, I'm understanding that the Gigabyte motherboard isn't a good idea. Is this correct?

Do I just go through 1 pass? If there are no errors, is everything good?

Would a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus or EVO be enough for that overclock?
