I don’t know if this was already mentioned in this thread, but everyone should watch Rossmann’s response to Linus’s comment. IMO he does a much better job at breaking down the problem of blocking ads than the self-righteous way that Linus does.

Basically, Linus is wrong to say ad blocking is exactly the same thing as piracy, because it is literally not. Maybe it is similar in *some* ways, but they are still two very different things.

The important distinction is that piracy is more concerned about the illegal distribution of content rather than just downloading the content. In ad blocking this “illegal distribution” part does not exist, as your content still comes directly from the original distributor, so it is essentially a different thing.

Another interesting thing that Rossmann mentions is whether it is fair for content creators to receive money for ads that their users play but don’t actually watch (e.g., go to the bathroom while the ad plays). Sure, playing the ad is good for the content creator as they get paid, but the advertiser gets screwed because they pay for an ad that somebody didn’t watch. In that case, for the advertiser it might be better if people who are not interested in ads use Adblock, so that they don’t need to pay the content creators for essentially useless ad views.

The last point is very much playing the devils advocate, but this is the discussion we must have if we want to assign moral or ethical values to blocking/watching ads, and/or compare it to something like piracy.

Sure, in reality the content creator loses money if people use ad block. However, does that money belong to the creator in the first place? The user who uses Adblock clearly has no interest in buying any ad products, so they would never generate any profit for the company to which the ad belongs, who is actually the one paying for the ad in the first place.

And if the creators don’t want to loose the money from ads, maybe they shouldn’t upload their videos for free on some stupid notion of a “implied contract of watching an ad”. Instead, they should charge their content consumers 0.001$ for each view, or however much one view is worth in terms of ad money. In that case, if someone rips the content and distributes it for free, then it would be “exactly the same as piracy”.

ThePinkPiggy reacted to mariushm in I have a question about PCIE lanes and how many can I use etc
No, on Intel all the pci-e lanes besides the 16 cpu ones come from the chipset ... so the M.2 lanes come from chipset.
The 16 lanes go to the pci-e x16, or the first two pci-e x16 slots (split into 2 x8 slots if two cards are inserted)

Well because the use often the same Plug in there entire (Business) Line! Like Lenovo and Dell does.
Some even power there Display with the same Plug Packs as Notebooks! That saved my Life when I was in Japan and my Thinkpad Power Supply failed. The Hotel had an some Laptops for Rent there who was Thinkpads. Thankfully the Borrow me the Power Supply and I could buy over there a replacement one! I Still use the old replacement with a Adapter from the Barrel to the Square one.
USB-C is nice but I like a dedicated one more the looking much more robust and the are often seperated from the Mainboard so when you broke it you can replace them.

I'll subscribe again if they actually hold up to this. I hated unsubbing, but it became clear that viewership loyalty was being used against us. I was also sick of embarrassing myself by regularly pulling up the wrong video to show people.

What's funny is that I didn't watch this live. I saw the title, got excited, but then was convinced it was just them being sarcastic. Six months of them having a "f*ck you" attitude made me assume they were beyond seeing their flaws.

ThePinkPiggy reacted to r2724r16 in How will I put this back together??
It would've been a smart idea to put the name of the camera in the title.

But I guess you guys don't really care. Almost all of your titles are clickbait these days.

I also gave your video a dislike, just because of that clickbait title

ThePinkPiggy reacted to JoostinOnline in Clickbait titles and thumbnails
The thumbnails were fine to me. I never paid any attention to them anyway. The titles are very important though. They affect my ability to find and share the videos at a later date, as well as just giving me a good idea of what I'm watching.

I made thread proposing a simple change that would be a decent middle ground. I was initially hopeful because there was some positive change. They backtracked though and are even worse than before.

Their behavior isn't the kind of company I want to support. I used to watch every video they put out, but I've left all the channels and I'm not going to LTX anymore. Will my leaving affect them? Probably not at all. I'm still happier not supporting a channel that only sees me as a dollar sign. Plenty of other people have messaged to tell me they did the same.

    Hello!

I've been a loyal subscriber of the Linus Tech Tips channel for years even though I've never posted on the forum.

I'm posting for the first time to share my opinion before it's too late.

I just wanted to say that I never click on content with clickbait titles or dumb thumbnails by principle. Unfortunately, more and more Linus Tech Tips videos on your YouTube channel have those.

    Here are a few examples:

    I don't click:
We NEVER expected NVIDIA to allow this... How has EVERYONE overlooked this?? Why would you even…? Razer thought this was a good idea?? I can't believe this. I click:
Alienware's CRAZY upgradeable laptop The OLED Gaming TV from ALIENWARE!! Preparing for 10 GIGABIT Internet! What Could Go Wrong? (even though I could do without the "What could go wrong") Electrical Wiring for the Gaming Center - What could go wrong? (I see a pattern…) MacBook Air 2018 – A PC Guy's Perspective "Water" Cooled Smartphone - S#!t Manufacturers Say Are Walmart Gaming PCs actually THAT bad? In general thumbnails have all been dumb for a few months now, with the "mandatory" funny and/or exaggerated face and the white outline. Thumbnails used two years ago with just the products were fine!

You have 8 million subscribers interested in computers, I'm not sure that they need these tactics to watch your videos.

I may be the only one to feel that way, and if so I would understand that you ignore this "rant", but I hope that I'm not alone, that other people feel the same and that hopefully you'll adapt to this portion of your audience.

I still like many of your videos, I hope you'll keep posting good ones!

I guess I have a cynical point-of-view, but "selling out" can be seen as synonymous to "making decisions for the benefit of the business", because literally the sole purpose of a business is to MAKE MONEY. If Linus decides to focus purely on profits and growing his company, then it is not entirely unreasonable to say he sold out, per se.

As for LinusTechTips as a channel, they never were technical experts, so seeing them focusing on entertainment is a very understandable choice. Unfortunately, entertainment and catering to a wider audience naturally means more clickbait and more technically shallow videos. That is the reality of LTT now - it's an more of an entertainment rather than a tech channel. How you feel about it, well that's personal.

This may not be a bad thing. It is great for LTT and all of their employees. It's great for people who want light content. I still occasionally watch LTT, but I have been slowly moving away towards other YouTube tech channels that cater better for my tastes.

EDIT: The one thing that DOES frustrate me is the clickbait on LTT. I get it why they do it. But they don't HAVE to do it. It looks so bad an cheap. Plenty of other YouTubers like Marques Brownlee do away with the clickbait and have professional looking thumbnails. But I guess LTT is sticking to their creative style of... whatever it is right now.

I don't really watch many of their videos anymore. That's just the way the cookie crumbles though; they've found that catering to a younger crowd and going for more overview than review is better for their channel. *shrugs* There's lots of other channels out there to get what you're looking for.

Basically, the Air is a device that complicates the whole MP lineup and the pricing makes no sense. The base model is 128GB ffs in 2018. $200 more for 256 is a joke. And no 128 GB is not enough for most people. The MP naming scheme at this point is out of this world and unless you are an Apple engineers you probably won't be able to find out what's what. The basic MB costs more than the Air and is a downgrade in almost every possible way. iPad Pro has no headphone jack so now you need a usb-c to 3.5mm to go along with your lightning to 3.5mm if you're into that. Good forbid you want to use a keyboard and charge the iPad Pro at the same time. Dongle galore. God forbid they gave you $9 dongle in the box with the iPad Pro. You gotta earn that money to get to $2 trillion. I could go on and on. Apple at this point has no idea what they're doing. They don't.
I have in my home an iPad Air 2 and a MBP 2017. I could justify both of these things, even the MBP, and could argue for days why. These new devices? Fuck no.

ThePinkPiggy got a reaction from voiha in Do you use a phone case ?
Full-naked here. I don't baby-sit my phone, but I'm not reckless either and have never broken a phone - or even cracked a screen.

I stopped using screen protectors with newer phones as their glass screens do a good enough job of resisting day-to-day pocket-scratches. As for cases, I only use one when it is needed - exercising, workshop, outdoor activities. Otherwise, I prefer the feeling of a naked phone.

In my opinion, the looks-oriented phone cases are just disrespectful to the phone designers. What is the point of buying a premium device made out of carefully engineered glass and metal, and then proceed by putting it into a cheap plastic case?

EDIT: Mind you, going naked means that your phone WILL accumulate some odd scratches and maybe small dents if you drop it. How much will depend on how careful you are. But honestly - it's just a phone.
