99vw got a reaction from stconquest in I5-750 to I5-4690k worth it?
Yes the motherboard will need a bios update before it will accept the chip. My plan was to see if frys would be able to throw in an older cpu and update the bios for me. Or see if I can borrow one from work.
That's one of reasons that has me doubting the buy as I just got the 280 four months ago and I'm not sure when I'll be upgrading again. Also just about any new GPU would require a new PSU as well.

Not really, most modern computers have AUTO-MDIX and will detect that two you're connected to another computer, and if neither of the computers have a dhcp server running, Windows will assign themselves a random link local address (in the range of 169.254.0.0-169.254.255.254). -

Just to add a few things, a big difference between the two is in fact their protocol and how they actually transmit data over the 2.4ghz band. Bluetooth uses frequency-hopping spread spectrum where as most WIFI implementations use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing. Also WIFI can be setup in a adhoc fasion and communicate directly with other devices as well.

99vw reacted to LAwLz in Smartphones on T-Mobile tend to last longer per charge?
Not exactly true. In modern phones the 2G, 3G and LTE modem is the same chip, so they have the same manufacturing process. The reason why it uses less power is because it finishes the task quicker and can go into deep sleep.
I should probably add that it is only true if you got a good signal, and even then it depends on what kind of thing you are using it for.

This should give some incentive for companies to start enabling TLS/SSL on their webservers.

That's actually something I'd look forward to: A reasonably priced laptop (For me that's around USD 700) that it's still competent at some gaming, right now it's either all of nothing for laptops with not much of a middle ground performer.

99vw got a reaction from LAwLz in Vlans Question
They can help performance. Say you have a network with 1000 PCs. Whenever there is a broadcast sent out it has to get sent out to all 1000 PCs. As you can see that is a lot of traffic that has to be sent. Now lets say that only 200 of those PCs actually relied on that boadcast. What you can do is create a vlan and put the 200 in one lan and 800 on the other. Now whenever there is a broadcast sent out it will only be sent to the 200 that needed it.
It can also be used for security by being able to create another lan and Isolate traffing going to that lan.

99vw got a reaction from Sheldon in DDoS Protection and other
A vpn would allow you to disconnect in the event of a DDoS which would no longer route the attacking traffic to your main ip. You could do this with a cheap vps and openvpn.
However, If you want active DDoS protection you will want something like CloudFlare.

99vw reacted to LAwLz in RSA took $10m from NSA to add backdoored Dual_EC_DRBG
RSA (the company) are the same people that made the RSA encryption standard (they formed the company after they made the RSA algorithm though). The backdoor was found in Dual_EC_DRBG and RSA (the company) was paid to use Dual_EC_DRBG as the default number generator in their implementation of RSA (the algorithm). Luckily for us, it seems like not many other companies have implemented that number generator because it's really slow and was already known of not producing very random numbers, but it shows that you can't trust RSA (the company).
