  1. Does it mean everyone should send their thoughts and prayers to Ken Ham and his rain damaged Ark Encounter? 😄😄

The owner of the life-size replica of Noah’s Ark in Northern Kentucky has sued its insurers for refusing to cover rain damage.

  2. To anyone thinking that Apple's new material for the 2019 MacBook Pro would fix the failing butterfly key switches, it won't.

The only solution is to go back to what works well: scissor switches.

For me, typing on a 2016 or newer MacBook keyboard is just incredibly unpleasant/borderline painful between all that noise and also the ridiculously bad key travel. I really can't see how anybody would willingly use one every single day.

Even a $200/$300 Acer 15" celeron laptop has a better keyboard than the butterfly keyswitches imho.

    3. captain_to_fire

@AluminiumTech I agree. I once used a classmate's 2017 MacBook Pro and typing on it makes me second guess myself because of its pathetically shallow key travel.

    4. DrMacintosh

@AluminiumTech The 2016 MacBook I have right now is the only MacBook I’ve ever owned or have really used.

Ive got very dainty fingers, and I don’t really understand the hate about the key travel. Keep in mind that I use a G610 Orion with MX Brown switches and I have no problem going between the two keyboards.

  3. OLED on a laptop? How about no! Unless someone wants dead pixels and screen burn in because of the persistent dock or taskbar at the bottom after two years of use? There’s no need to switch to short-lived OLED to achieve 120Hz variable refresh rate as demonstrated by the iPad Pro which uses IPS LCD.

I mean no matter what route Apple goes for, people'll bitch about it.

    2. captain_to_fire

I’m hoping they don’t. Tbh the only advantage I can see with OLED is higher contrast, true blacks and thinner displays but that’s about it. When it comes to longevity, IPS LCD takes it.

    3. lewdicrous

Apple and longevity? The butterfly keyboards would like to have a talk with you. /s

I wouldn't be surprised if they actually did it; thin, light and expensive is their thing.

  4. Who would’ve thought that the iOS 12.3 contains Easter Eggs like this one: showing the status of the warranty period. @DrMacintosh

    1. AluminiumTech
    2. captain_to_fire

It shows my warranty coverage. Prior to iOS 12.3 it doesn’t.

    3. AluminiumTech

How's that an Easter egg tho?

  5. IMO: When it's summer and the weather is way too uncomfortable like mine (35°C, 84% relative humidity), always remember that "no pants are the best pants"☀️

Even I'm too scared to look that up.

  6. ...And Apple quietly updated the MacBook Pro line by adding an 8-core version for the touchbar 13" and 15" MacBook Pro...

    Pricing and Availability
Starting at $1,799 and $2,399 respectively, the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and 15-inch MacBook Pro are available today through apple.com, the Apple Store app and in select Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers later this week. Additional technical specifications, configure-to-order options and accessories are available online at apple.com/mac.

How can they cool it off though?

    3. DrMacintosh

For clarification 13” models are still quad cores. They just are updated to the latest gen and have higher clocks. Also new keyboards.

    4. captain_to_fire

      Also new keyboards

It’s still the fragile butterfly keyboard.  ⌨️  🔨

By thermal throttling it to the nth degree.

  8. I hope it is us to have it next but perhaps when my hair is already white. Nonetheless, congratulations to Taiwan.

But considering that Philippines is a Catholic-majority country and that the clergy's voice is often loud when it comes to legislators despite our constitution assuring freedom of speech and religion, I doubt that it'll happen through my lifetime.

  10. When my professor complains about my allegedly shitty handwriting for an essay, I can’t help but think that this person has a worse penmanship than me considering he’s a doctor already practicing for 10 years. 🙄

    1. ARikozuM

We really need to start doing composition and handwriting in schools. I can only imagine Gordon Rule courses being "560 character" essays.

    2. captain_to_fire

I don’t claim to have good handwriting skills but I doubt it’s the worst.

This was part of the handwritten essay for our final exam about descending fiber tracts to the contraction of a skeletal muscle. It looks just like how I’ll write it on paper.

  11. PSA to everyone using an iPhone or iPad: iOS 12.3 is out and it contains security fixes for 42 CVEs .

    1. DrMacintosh

That's a good amount of patches. I already updated my Mac to 10.14.5 and my iPhone to 12.3 last night.

  12. Is Linus still sponsored by GFuel? I hope not anymore. I looked up the links attached to the tweet and the claims were legit.

Pewds has a branded gfuel shaker now... guess Imma have to poison myself now 🤷🏼‍♀️

  13. Fact: You cannot trust Bloomberg stories about tech security because their writers are dumb af, basically it’s fake news.

    1. ARikozuM

Layers of security. Just because one part is protected doesn't mean we should remove it until all unprotected areas are protected.

It is so unfortunate that there are people that are good at acting like they know what they're talking about to the point that they can spew bullsh*t and still sound knowledgeable.

      [American bootlicking intensifies]

  14. PSA: I can’t believe this hasn’t made it on the Tech News yet. WhatsApp urges its users to immediately update the said app after finding out that Israeli hackers have allegedly taken advantage of a vulnerability that can spy on iPhones. What’s worse is that all a hacker needs to do is call the target and the user doesn’t even need to answer.

The spyware was developed by the Israeli cyber intelligence company NSO Group, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the vulnerability.

Attackers could transmit the malicious code to a target’s device by calling the user and infecting the call whether or not the recipient answered the call. Logs of the incoming calls were often erased, according to the report.

WhatsApp said that the vulnerability was discovered this month, and that the company quickly addressed the problem within its own infrastructure. An update to the app was published on Monday, and the company is encouraging users to upgrade out of an abundance of caution.

Which makes me think, are Telegram and iMessage vulnerable too? Is it possible that the design flaw is that your username is your phone number?

    2. captain_to_fire

No need to go conspiracy mode on an implementation flaw.

Well I was thinking that having your phone number as your only username to use WhatsApp might be a design flaw in security. I could be wrong, but you can be a target already by having a single phone number unlike having an actual username.

    3. captain_to_fire

But then, what do I know? 🤷🏻‍♂️

    4. 2FA

A security (researcher?) manager by the name of Adam Brown at Synopsis is claiming it's actually a vulnerability in libssh (this is what a couple articles say) but there is no link to a statement by him nor can I find anyone else stating this. Also it affects Android versions, Windows Phone, and Tizen (but slightly older version numbers). News is so new with little reporting that it's hard to find concrete information about it. Not even NIST or Mitre have published the CVE information yet, but the number is reserved in their databases.

  15. Thank you Linus, et.al for doing this ad for Madrinas Coffee before school stuff takes a toll on me. My favorite part is when Kyle said "Lesbian is short for Linus Sebastian." 😅😅

What I'd REALLY like to see is a camera with enough dynamic range that can capture images like that of the sun, AND of the moon, during a partial solar eclipse, with a single exposure. :)

  19. Finally! With Android Q, critical security updates will be pushed via the Play Store. Sure many OEMs like Samsung and LG would only push two years of Android updates, but at least the security stuff will be there for longer.

    1. DrMacintosh

Google never should have have carriers control over updates in the first place.

    2. captain_to_fire

Back in the day, that is their way of getting ahead of their competition: iPhones, Blackberries, Palm Pre, and Nokia phones running Symbian OS. Thanks to Verizon's push, Android got a lot of PR. After Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile followed and marketed Android phones because prior to early 2011, the iPhone was an AT&T exclusive.

Remember those Verizon ads lampooning AT&T's 3G coverage?

    3. DrMacintosh

I’m too young to remember those.

What's broken? It's not possible for a post to be mod queued and not show up - that's just not how it works (though I do have a couple of ideas for what could make it seem like that). Can you post in Bugs and Issues with the details of the issue and I'll look into it in due course (though maybe not for a couple of months, so until then avoid saying Keto in status updates).

    3. leadeater

@colonel_mortis Posts weren't mod queued they just can't be seen for a while, post a comment then reload the page and it's not there but after ~15 minutes it shows up. This was for posts not hidden for being spam.

    4. colonel_mortis

I see the issue, it's another stupid IPS bug. I despair for them (and their lack of automated testing) sometimes.

  21. Was thinking of having my eyes corrected by LASIK surgery, but upon looking at the cost, I realized that my prescription glasses is just $80.

    1. Show previous comments  1 more
    2. captain_to_fire

That's still cheaper than lasik surgery

    3. Jtalk4456

i plan to eventually get it done later in life to see some improvement, but i have too many problems to be fully 20/20

Also it's not that expensive compared to a life time of glasses. With insurance, I pay about 200 for glasses a year, but mine are pretty bad, so most people pay about 100 per year or less. If your vision is not too bad and lasik can fully correct it, then the $~1000 per eye average means you can break even in 20 yrs. Not saying the ROI is great, but that's only looking at the cost, not the convenience gained. IF I could afford it, I definitely would.

    4. Origami Cactus

      Origami Cactus

@Jtalk4456 I aheve looked into LASIC, but the risk right now is still too great. You can get worse defects, than just wearing glasses, so im staying with glasses, maybe contacts, for about the next 10 years. Then i will look into it again.

  22. Random brain farts before I drink my cup of coffee...

grammatically it's fine, but the "weak" was an unnecessary descriptor that made the sentence sound more drawn out and wierd

    3. captain_to_fire

@Jtalk4456 I would've written it as "Note how much space the weak integrated graphics has occupied on the CPU", which I think is better.

    4. Jtalk4456

yeah, a bit of different order would have done it wonders

  23. I can't wait to see the EU to strike down on Apple's monopolistic practice. This reminds me that years ago, months prior to iOS 9's blue light filter called "Night Sight", they also cracked down on third party blue light filter apps from the App Store.
