Hoping for a water game this year!

I graduated last year, but I am part of my university's Ri3D team for this year's game. We have a large group of FIRST alumni at the school who will be working on creating two different robots. The entire 72 hours will be livestreamed, to show the process, from designing to building.

I spent more time doing VEX than FRC, but I feel FRC was much more interesting and applied. I would highly reccomend it to anyone who has the opportunity to participate.

Concussions occur when the brain hits the side of the skull. This means force to any part of the body which transfers the energy to the head/neck, can cause a concussion. A severe concussion can be caused by minimal amount of force, especially if there is past head injury history. Slalom skiers recently have had to change helmet specifications because of repeated pounding of gates (the objects they ski around) on the helmets. The pounding gradually broke the material of the helmet down, and slalom skiers were ending up with concussions. Likely if Hirscher had been hit anywhere near the head he would have a concussion, which is a severe injury.

Its important to remember these skiers are racing on ice. The snow is injected with water before the race occurs to level the playing field (Make sure the conditions are the same for each skier). This means the snow is not soft and impact absorbent like normal, it hurts really badly when you fall, and increases the quantity of injuries. This ice causes skiers and their technicians to sharpen the skis edges, leading to an increases risk of a "caught edge". If the drone were to have distracted Hirscher for even a small instant, you could have caught an edge and torn an ACL, or another ligament.

This was the best discipline for this event to have occurred, the skiers have the slowest speed in slalom, as mentioned before 40km/h. If this were to have happened during a downhill event (Skiers reach speeds over 120km/h), the results would likely have been more catastrophic.

Beginner's Photography Guide. Getting into Photography.

Hey guys this is my first guide so feel free to leave comments and suggestions.
I’ve broken down this guide into two sections. Impulse buying into photography and getting into photography as a hobby.
If you have ADHD and just want the skeleton arguments the bolded parts are all you really need to take home.

      Part 1:
    Impulse Buying In

    Vacation
You’re going on the trip of a lifetime and you want photos that will last you a lifetime.
My recommendation: DO NOT BUY A DSLR! Get a compact camera with a long zoom ratio or just use your phone.
DSLR’s are bulky, heavy, and lets be honest terrible for selfies. You’re on vacation, enjoy it. Get something small that has a long zoom range. When you’re on vacation it’s the memories and the people that make the shot, not the image quality. A single grainy, underexposed, blurry selfie from your phone of you and your buddies having a great time is way better than a sharp rigidly composed postcard.

Do not underestimate how much your camera actually weighs. Remember you’re probably going to have it hanging around your neck for hours at a time. Forget about switching lenses, those precious moments happen quick on vacation, it’s better to have a lens that will go from wide to tight all in one. Again, you’re on vacation, enjoy it.

    The Baby is Coming
Okay, the baby is coming and you want some nice pictures of him/her growing up.
My recommendation: Forget the DSLR, get a mirrorless camera or compact camera that has WIFI.
The reason I recommend this is two-fold, your partner (who I’m assuming is not really into photography) will be more willing to use / bring around a smaller camera where they can leave it in Auto and snap away. You may be willing to learn photography and how to use the camera, but with a newborn your partner probably doesn’t.
Mirrorless cameras, especially one’s with the collapsible lens are small enough to slip in a diaper bag and easy enough to use that it doesn’t intimidate the operator. There will be days where the last thing on your mind is “get the camera” when you have a screaming newborn. Keep the camera in the diaper bag and forget it, if you need it it’s there.

In addition, lets be honest, as a new parent you’re more likely to use your phone for pictures than any other camera because it’s so convenient. Even if you do use the dedicated camera you’re going to want to share those pictures. Skip the hassle of having to import the SD to a computer. With most mirrorless cameras/compact cameras, just push it to your phone over wifi or NFC and post. Job done.

    Wedding
So someone you know or you yourself is getting wed and they/you want nice pictures.
Hire a real photographer or if you don’t have the budget find a college kid who’s into photography, or if you have no budget, teach uncle Jim the family cameraman how to upload to Facebook.

For a wedding, you want to actually be attending the wedding not worrying about pictures. If you can’t afford a real photographer there are tons of college kids chomping at the bit to become photographers. Just go to the local campus and ask the receptionist for the facebook/email of the photography club. Take your pic. If you’re not willing to do that, just let uncle Jim tape/photograph the wedding. He’s going to do it anyways.

    Part 2 :
Getting Into Photography as a hobby: No budget to moneybags

Okay so you want to learn photography? My recommendation is even if you have money to burn start with the lowest entry level DSLR body(reasoning is below) or just use your phone. Canon or Nikon or Pentax, it doesn’t matter.
If you’re considering getting into photography there are fundament questions you need to answer fundamental skills you need to learn first. For these an uber camera that does 10fps at 36mp doesn’t matter. The limitations of an entry level DSLR will force you to learn these skills:

Composition: Can you identify what makes an interesting picture?
The image quality can be amazing but a picture of manure is just a picture of manure. If you have to do the old double “l” square rectangle thing with your fingers. Start seeing the world as a snapshot in time and just start thinking, “Hey that looks cool, what if I took a picture from this angle, over here, or over there?”

Exposure: Is my Exposure Triangle right?
What is shutter speed, aperture, and ISO? Why is my image so dark, blurry or really grainy? Play around with those settings, take control of your image. There are beginner auto modes on entry level DSLRs, see what they do and mimic it. You’ll eventually learn the correlations. Subject moving too fast, causing a blurry picture, push up ISO and increase shutter speed. Image is really grainy? Try slowing shutter and dropping your ISO.
There are apps for ISO and Android that allow you more control over your camera. Learn the controls.

    Now answer these questions:
What type of photography are you into?
This is the real reason why I said get the entry level DSLR. Spend the extra money on lenses and accessories. Play around with them. Experiment with different styles. Are you a natural light portrait shooter, a strobist, a landscape shooter, architectural, wildlife, composite (panorama, time lapse, focus stacking), product, wedding, event/journalistic, or is video your thing? Use the money you would have spent on a higher end body to play around.

If you don’t have the money, get those little lenses for your phone or use digital filters to mimic a lens. Again it’s all about experimenting, get a fish eye, a wide angle, a macro, a tele. Try to get a group of friends together to light a portrait with the LED lights on the back of their phones.
Try out different photography styles and when you’re ready go ahead and invest on exactly what you want to do. Find what you love to photograph.

Do I even enjoy photography now? Do I want to go further or go back to camera phone filters and selfies?
If you find that photography isn’t your thing, that’s fine. Photography is not for everyone. At least you found out now before you shelled out for equipment you aren’t going to use. If you do have equipment just sell it off second hand. Photography gear retains a surprising amount of its value.

Okay so you’ve gotten the fundamental skills down, you enjoy photography, and you know your niche. Now, go wild.
Get what you want/need and keep going, it’s up to you now to find your own way in photography.

So I thought because well... I am bored and in reality I have nothing better to do. That I would make a FreeNAS guide covering the basics and showing how to setup a server for home use. First things first, I am not an expert nor do I claim to be. I am just bored. So lets begin with this quick and dirty FreeNAS setup.

    Things you will need:
Installation media PC your are willing to spare A USB drive for the OS Drives for the storage Network connection An hour or so of free time So to start you can get a copy of FreeNAS from http://www.freenas.org/download-freenas-release.html You can burn it to a disk or load it onto a USB drive. Here are a couple tools to help with that, http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ http://www.imgburn.com/ Once you have loaded the OS onto some form of media, insert it into your PC and boot from it. Be a little patient and let it boot, until you reach the install screen. Once there select Install/Upgrade.

Just so I'm clear, the reason I don't watch the videos anymore is simply because I don't enjoy them anymore. They feel like a commercial. They don't tell me anything new (admittedly that might be because I've watched for so long).

I originally watched them because I liked to learn and I enjoyed exploring new and interesting products with Linus. It felt like we were discovering cool things together.

    Compare this:

    To this:

Which is more professional? Which feels more like you and the youtuber (in this case, Linus) are interacting in a way, and which feels more like you are a consumer watching a commercial?

I watched to learn about interesting products and explore something new with Linus because I enjoyed it. Now I feel more like I'm watching the commercials between the show that I actually want to watch when I watch his videos. I don't mean to be hateful in that in any way. It's just the truth.

Also, what made Linus' videos his, rather than a copy of what everyone else was doing was his opinion. I never see that anymore (admittedly, I watch far fewer videos, but the ones I do watch, it isn't there). I personally don't want scripted professionalism because, in Linus' case, it takes away the thing I actually watched the videos for. Enjoyment and learning about things I wouldn't learn about elsewhere. Both are gone AFAIAC.

I believe you can have both, and while I'm not interested in professionalism, having both would be cool.

First I do agree with you, but I thought I could provide some more insight of where OP is coming from(I don't speak for OP, but I thought I could give my view of his/her post).

    1. I agree with OP on this one. The videos have become less personal in a sense of we the consumers of the content are just getting information rather than feeling/interacting with the presenter. I get that it's a business and the team is absolutely swamped, but the personality we get from Linus is what brought us here(or at least me). Now I only get that sense when watching the livestreams or the one video a week that actually has a social side of him(but this is probably because of commercial purposes so you have to act professionally while representing the product).

2&3. I think it's the fact that there isn't a diversity of what is shown for tech items between tech channels. For example the recent ASUS showing where Tek Syndicate has HOURS of ASUS content and LTT comes and does the same, with repeating of the same information(with minuscule differential details between the two). I can relate to OP on this one due to the fact that I'm worn out of ASUS content from Tek Syndicate since their videos were released first, so now everything new posted by LTT I don't want to watch since I've already seen it on another channel. Again, you can't please everybody and not everybody subscribes/watches all kinds of different tech outlets, but for the people that do watch various tech enthusiasts, the content does seem to be the same across multiple channels.

    4. Personally I can't stand when JJ from ASUS comes onto the streams/videos, but that's because I don't like ASUS, nothing against JJ! I guess I can see where OP is coming from on this one due to the fact that the "guests" are already popular/semi-popular on YouTube(except Josh, which is probably why OP doesn't mind him), so if you wanted to watch/listen to these people, you can already do so. I however like the guest segments because you get to hear their opinions on subjects/events that are occurring that they don't usually cover in their day-to-day videos.

    5. This can tie into 2 and 3 as well, but personally I don't like watching PAX, Computex, or any other live event coverage because the videos aren't great quality(background noise, presenters yelling(Linus, Slick), no in-depth information). To be honest, if other channels are covering this then this shouldn't be problem(but again, that's if you watch other channels and not just one specifically). If you want Computex coverage then watch the Tek(are they going to Computex?) or read articles online.

    6. Agreed. There isn't much out there to cover that hasn't been covered already, and the "little" gems that are worth making a video over probably aren't high on the queue due to all the coverage of ASUS products and whatever else Linus has in store for us.

OP, I understand where you're coming from and do agree with you on a certain extent so let me say this. Unsubscribe and check in every other week, or maybe once a month. With the flow new products; GPU's, cases, CPU's, RAM, etc. to come in the next year things will pick back up. If you've ever watched an anime, consider this the filler content until the new season starts.
