Project Alternate: PC in a desk scratch build & MODs   Hi all, After what feels like a very long year I have decided to start work on my new desk build. The idea for this desk came to me when i was working on my last desk & at one point I almost started the project  again, but I'm glad i didn't   Most people liked the desk & I learned a great deal during the build.   The Project Alternate design slightly changed month by month & I will show some of the other plans & explain why the changes was made. This time I'm hoping to outdo my last desk & hopefully help others in the process.    The desk work is about to start, using mostly MDF, Perspex, clay, metal & glass I plan to build the desk in 3 parts, starting from the bottom, then middle followed by the top section. the tricky parts will be the sharp corners & angles on the edges.   In making the desk in 3 parts it will allow for easy transport from my garden shed to my  very small room/office.   I plan to have the 2 reservoirs just under the top shelf so i can see the water flowing by   have a couple of different layouts for the internal components,  but want to wait until the top compartment is built so I can see IRL what looks & works best.   For the specs, I'm upgrading from my trusty i5-2500k to a i7-5820K, due to the CPU upgread I will also be using the new ASUS X99 TUF motherboard & DDR4   This time I will also go with 3 screens at 1440p if possible, or 1X 4K screen, so my HD7970s will also need upgrading to a R9-295x2.   The desk is going to take months to complete, so rushing out for parts now is not necessary unless it's something on sale I can't pass on   **UPDATE 18/10/15: some Specs**   SPECS CPU    - i7-5820k MB     - ASUS Sabertooth X99 RAM    - 32GB Avexir Blitz 1.1 (DDR4)  GPU    - ASUS R9-295x2 PSU    - Cooler Master: V1200 Platinum PSU2   - Cooler Master: GM750W Fans   - Cooler Master: Jet flow 120's & Cooler Master Silencio FP120 PWM  HDs    - Western Digital Green 6TB - Barracudas x2 2TB - Wester Digital Green 1TB SSDs   - 2x Samsung EVO850s 250GB (500GB) RADS   - 2x Phobya G-Changer 360 RADs V.2 RES    - 2x Phobya 450 reservoirs CPU WB - Alphacool NexXxoS XP³ Light PUMP   - 2x Alphacool VPP655 GPU WB - Alphacool NexXxoS GPX KB     - CM Storm quickfire xti Mouse  - CM Storm Reaper       For people that just want to see the photos & the build progress here are the build log vids The final will be added later.     Build log 1   Build log 2   Build log 3   Desk top lift     For past & present MODs/Builds please check my Facebook & Youtube pages.

FavouritePho reacted to Suika in The LG G4: My smartphone of the year?
When the LG G3 was released way back when, I didn't think I would be the type of guy to use a 5.5" screen comfortably. By then I was accustomed to the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 in terms of their size, and not too much of a fan of the whole Phablet concept. Well, then I picked up a OnePlus One for cheap. It was an amazing phone, but I would be lying if I said it was easy to handle when I received it. I had to grow accustomed to the screen, but it didn't take long to do so. Long story short on that one, large screens require adjustment, but they're not too difficult to use. On to what I love about the phone, I'll brake it apart into a few things.

For those still in the dark, here are the specs on the device.

Snapdragon 808 Hexacore Processor, big.LITTLE architecture with a dual-A57 core processor at 1.87GHz, and smaller quad-A53 core processor at 1.44GHz.
    Adreno 418
3GB RAM, 32GB Storage (Expandable up to 2TB, though such a MicroSD card doesn't exist)
    5.5" 2560x1440 IPS "Quantum" Display
    3,000 mAh Removable Battery

The camera is impressive enough to get a description of its own.

16MP Rear Shooter Camera, 8MP Front Facing "Selfie" Camera
    1/2.6" Sensor with f/1.8 Aperature
    Laser Autofocus
    3 Axis Optic Image Stabilization
    LED Flash
Color Spectrum Sensor, for amazing white balance in photos.

This is something I'm going to update as I haven't had the phone for too long yet, so some aspects are bound to change.

Camera: This was the defining feature for me. I wanted a DSLR but didn't want to make the investment. I actually considered the Galaxy S6 on the basis that I could at least grow into taking photos with a good shooter but be able to justify the cost on it being a premium smartphone. Here comes the G4, with a very full manual mode that gives it DSLR like control and features as well an already spectacular auto mode. Video is also great and with a little post processing in a program like Adobe Premier, could make off as looking like a DSLR solution. If video is your thing, though, I would look at getting an external mic too, but this also holds true to just about any DSLR solution.

The screen: I'm a big believer in Apple's Retina Display concept, anything above 320ppi is overkill and difficult to notice differences in higher pixel densities. Moving from my OnePlus One at 1080p to the LG G4 nailed that thought into me, as while the display is brilliant, 1440p isn't doing it as much justice as advertised. That goes without saying that this is a beautiful display, however. It's less saturated than Samsung's AMOLED technology, but I'm on the side of the spectrum where that's what I prefer. The G4's quantum display is a stunning one, it gets bright and can deal with sunlight very well actually, nothing is less than beautiful looking. My only gripe is that whites aren't as white as I would like, when I view the LinusTechTips mobile website, everything has a sort of darker tint than on my OnePlus One, but that may be personal preference.

Battery: The battery, again coming from the OnePlus One, is an improvement. With the One, I could end a day with 20% battery left and only an hour and a half of screen on time, keeping it charging in the car in a total of a 40-45 minute commute, and I was OK with that for the most part. The G4, I haven't gotten quite an all-day battery life, but unlike the OnePlus, I haven't plugged it on a charger yet and am still at two hours of screen on time, with approximately 30% charge remaining. It's not what I want, but maybe Verizon's Droid Turbo is the only stock solution that would actually satisfy what I want, but that comes with the con of being a Verizon phone. LG helps with their free additional battery promo, but I would only consider using it on days where I know I won't be near a charger for some time. For reference, I keep the screen at 60% brightness, bluetooth, location, and WiFi services typically on (I keep a Moto 360 on my wrist), so I may torture phones more than others. My OnePlus also had a lower screen brightness, I believe around 25-40%. I'm being especially torturous to the G4 right now, as I want to see how far I can go with the battery on average.

Speaker: Yes, the speaker is on the back, very few manufacturers decide to place it on the front, but this is still a very, very loud speaker. It beats my OnePlus One, Galaxy S5, and even the HTC One M7. It makes a nifty little boombox, having the volume buttons on the back as well. The headphone audio levels leave some to be desired, with HTC and Samsung offering higher levels than LG, but quality is good nonetheless.

Comfort and Luxury: I'd be lying if I said the OnePlus One had either of these. The One was more difficult to hold, being slightly larger and heavier, and I didn't like the feeling of the Sandstone Black cover. It felt as cheap as it was, but it was still a high-end device. The G4, specifically with the leather cover, feels so much nicer in the hand and actually looks like a device that can be considered a flagship phone. It still has a plastic construction but the leather makes up for quite a bit of that I feel. The Galaxy S6 has a glass body and aluminum frame, but at what cost? No removable battery, no expandable storage, and if you drop it, you're risking a crack on either side of the phone, costing a very, very expensive replacement. The G4, specifically with leather, still feels luxurious, the camera and buttons with a slightly gold hue over them is a very nice touch, and if you end up damaging the leather, it's not as costly of a replacement, and you can do it yourself, unlike certain other flagships. The curve to the device attributes to the comfort of the device as well, being large enough that you can feel it, but subtle enough where it's not too terribly easy to see and become uncomfortable in practice. LG claims that the screen is 20% more crack resistant because of the curve, but I don't know how you can quantify that number.

With many good things, have to come some bad things. Typically the things that are wrong with the phone are minor and some may be limited to just me. These deducted very little for the general experience of the device, but if they were improved upon or I wasn't stupid, they'd make the best phone for the year, but right now, it's competitive with the Galaxy S6, not a 100% better option.

Plastic: For a high-end device, yes, plastic does feel like it makes the device cheaper. Perhaps it makes it lighter versus other materials, but I can't say it's a nice touch. This isn't a huge gripe for me.

Battery: I praised the battery over surpassing my OnePlus One, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. Running the Snapdragon 808 using the big.LITTLE architecture, I'd expect far more out of the device in terms of battery life. Maybe it'll improve with time through software updates, but I can't speak with certainty on that, as previous updates on the LG G3 did not yield considerable results. I'm excited for the second battery to arrive, as while it isn't the best solution, it's decent.

The buttons: This is a rather small complaint, and is specifically with the leather, but sometimes it's difficult to tell if I'm pressing the volume up or volume down button because the power button and leather feel oddly alike, both slightly rising. If I go too far up, I risk putting a finger smudge on the camera. This may just be something I'm yet to get used to.

Software: Kudos to LG for making Android far more customize-able, more so than Google, but I feel like LG's UX software kind of drowns me in features, whereas I'm used to the stock Google Launcher. LG's Smart Notice isn't as terribly convenient as you would hope, in fact, I prefer stock Android's weather widget in place of it. Google Now cards feel more relevant and useful, and it may just be me, but LG Health doesn't feel as worth it over Google Fit or Motorola Connect (I use a Moto 360). The settings menu is by no means difficult to navigate but I remain rather neutral on that, I don't believe it's any better or worse versus stock. Wallpaper selection is rather minimal and I wish LG would at least include stock Android wallpapers as well, there's not even a single live wallpaper with UX UI.

All in all, though, this is an amazing device, my favorite Android device so far, right behind the Nexus 4 (which is aged quite a bit by now). I absolutely love the camera, a budding photographer would go crazy with it. The battery is alright but I feel like more could be done to make it better in terms of optimization, but LG's second battery promo is pleasant and welcomed. It's a band-aid solution but it's a solution at all. The software leaves a lot to be desired and for once in a generation of phones, I think Samsung's Touchwiz is a bit more desirable. I do not regret my purchase, and recommend this to any who have these three concerns in a smartphone: Camera, battery, and storage.

The guys behind Witcher: We will give the consoles what they can handle, but we won't gimp the PC to fit the console. Both platforms will get the best we can manage, of course the PC will be better since we can manage more.

Ubisoft: Herp Derp we are inept developers and can't exploit anything regardless of the hardware it runs on.

I'm not even going to blame the console hardware. Console hardware HAS ALWAYS been crap. That was never the issue.

Developers are just getting very lazy. They don't want to put in extra work. They want to repackage their work as DLC (looking at you, Bungie and Destiny) or they want to make bullshit excuses about parity just to hide the fact that they can't code their way out of a paper bag.

Fucking hacks are what is holding the industry back. Laziness.

Not hardware. Some devs have the right attitude towards the consoles. They do what they can, where they can, but they don't gimp the PC version just cause they feel lazy. As someone who games on 3 platforms, I appreciate when a PC release isn't completely fucked up (see: Shadow of Mordor). Sure, I bought SoM on my Xbox instead of PC, but thats just my personal preference on the matter.

I appreciate the choice. I appreciate having the effort put in no matter what platform. At least make me believe you tried. Don't give BS excuses as to why. Do you think most rational and sane PC/Console gamers give a shit about one platform exceeding another?

I sure as hell, as a consumer who spends hundreds on a year on gaming without even talking about the hardware, don't care. I don't care that my PC stomps over my PS4 which stomps over my Xbox which stomps over the Wii U (which I don't have, but lets keep this example going). I just don't care. I care that the games are fun. First and foremost. I care that the effort was put in to make a proper port that doesn't hold back for arbitrary reasons.

    I just like playing games!

And then these assholes come in with bullshit justifications to cover up their pathetic skills as game makers.

Basically this Ubisoft dev is saying that it's "too hard" to achieve 60FPS and "you don't gain much" from the higher frame rate. I would recommend reading the whole article, if I put the whole thing here it would be a shameless copy and paste.

    Hello to the Build Logs,

About a year ago I had an Idea for an Orange and Black Build.  I started thinking about different shades of Orange, what parts to have color and what would remain black.
I had an old Antec DF-85 that was Empty and collecting dust, and so it began.  I few ideas and many hours later "Electric Orange" was Born.

Lets start at the Beginning.  There is Definitely some potential here with this case. At this stage I really don't know how much yet.

I don't do Sketch work or Create Renders for Mods.  Everything with this Project is off the Hip and very spontaneous..

Windows Paint is about as High tech as it gets for me.

Well, That looks good, lets rip it apart..

Now that its in Pieces,  I needed a Color.  Searches for Electric Orange Paint really didn't lead to the right shade for me.  So, I decided on a shade of Orange called Omaha.
This Shot of a 69 Mopar in Omaha Orange Inspired me.

A Quick trip to my friends at Napa and Presto..  Omaha Custom Mixed to Aerosol..

So I Started spraying panels and fans and You name it.  But in the End, I just wasn't happy with the Final Product.  Lots of Orange Peel..

There has to Be a Better Way to paint this.. At this point in the Project is it too late to start over?  Nope.

Quick Trip to the Acid Tanks at my Powdercoater and Wah-La.. All Better..  Oh,, Why not Build a Paint Booth in my Basement and get a Full Blown HVLP set up and teach myself how to paint Professionally while I'm at it..
    So I Did.

Now that I set myself up with Pro Hardware.  Lets Paint.

Much Smoother and controlled Surface Now.  Rattle cans are a thing of the Past for me.
Here is an Example of the Surface top Coat I can Produce now with my HVLP Gun.  Color is "Burma Black Pearl" and "Omaha Orange"  Front Panel Shot here.

If these iPhone 6 rumors are true, earlier it was also being speculated that Apple is working on two versions of iPhone 6: 4.7 inch and a larger 5.7 inches display. According to Dickson, the next iPhone 6 will be powered by an A8 processor clocked at 2.6 GHz.

    iPhone 6 OIS:
Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) helps in stabilizing the image by taking photos in quick succession and combining them to minimize motion. OIS stabilizes an still image and tries to avoid blur; with video recording, it removes shaking effects, thus affecting the overall camera quality. Previously, smartphones have used digital stabilization accelerometers where software adjusts the image to avoid blur effects.

Yes people its confirmed, the gtx 790 is so black, it absorbed all colour, some scientists say it might be a black hole, the only evidence of it coming is the white hovering text that reads gtx 790 and the pci-e lane that comes out of it.

Basically this is the gen 2 titan, yes the titan um 2. Mr black over here also has some specs 2880 CUDA cores, 240 TMUs and 48 ROPs. Apparently there is a lot fo evidence from a source that shall not be mentioned(AMD) that this titan BLACK edition will be coming soon, as in February soon. Its not confirmed but the gpu may have 6gb vram with a 384bit bus which is nice but a 512bit bus would of been better. Im surprised that they are using GK110 bloody again.(or so the gtx titan NOT BLACK edition can have a bigger performance increase).

    Now

    ENTER THE GTX 790

Crap i talked about that above, nvm. Ok so the specs confused me.

    Possible specs of GeForce GTX TITAN BE and GTX 790   GeForce GTX 780 Ti GeForce GTX TITAN “Black Edition” GeForce GTX 790 GPU 28nm GK110 28nm GK110 2x 28nm GK110 GPU Config 2880 : 240 : 48 2880 : 240 : 48 4992 : 416 : 80 Video Memory 3GB GDDR5 6GB GDDR5 10GB GDDR5 Memory Bus 384-bit 384-bit 2x 320-bit TDP 250W 250W 300W Price $649 $999 $999+ Launch Date November 2013 February 2014 March 2014
So its got two gpus, but whats odd is that thet are better then a 780 and worse then a 780 ti, they also have a 320bit bus which i dont think ive seen before, it could just be a typo for view whoring. Furthermore the 10gb vram, which means 5gb as they arent AMD, this is quite confusing and it suggests that there is a future gpu which has 2496, i think ive seen that number before but i cant remember where. Maybe this is the gtx 870, we never know, they might rebadge again a lot of the cards.

My review of the Ravern RVZ01 from Silverstone is here. It's also kinda an unboxing I guess. The compactness of this case is similar to the Asrock M8, but the key differences here are cost (less $$$), materials (plastic vs aluminum alloy), and cooling (dramatically better on air and liquid cooling capability on top of that)

edit: yeah I know the pricing links don't work yet. This bad boy isn't available yet so they are just links to search results

I figured some people might be curious about the components we put in Brandon's PC. The objective was to put together a "super baller" video editing rig with some serious gaming horsepower because he (finally) wants to get into PC gaming

£550-600 seems like an alright price for them.  Think I'm going to wait and see how Mantle performs before I buy a new card though.

The GTX 780 Ti is in an interesting position compared to its competition. Compared to its closest price competitors lower in the food chain, the GTX 780 and the R9 290X it looks like a fairly compelling value. Compared to the next card down AMD, the R9 290, things start getting more complicated if you're willing to overlook the heat output and noise levels of the R9 290. And finally, compared to the only "gaming" card positioned above it, the GTX Titan, 780 Ti looks like a downright STEAL! Titan customers really were spending extra on a card that was geared more for compute. The GTX 780 Ti is faster and less expensive.
