wait sometimes? Do you just swap boards like, often?

lol. I mean don't think about it usually when I use my PC. I use a C236A board in my PC (used to run a Skylake Xeon in it before going to a 7700k) and it blends in with my black, white, and chrome color scheme (just glancing at it I see the Asus logo on my GPU, EVGA PSU, and the G.Skill RAM (all the logos I see just glancing in the window). I know what hardware is in it if I think about it, but I don't tinker around with this PC much anymore because I just need it to just work (not the case always because of Windows 10 being stupid, the fall 2017 update screwed it up around midterms last Fall and it took me a week to get around reinstalling Windows so I had to use my laptop for a week (thank goodness for USB-C and my usb-c hub for it so I could dock into my desktop setup even though it was inconvent)) because of school.

Also out of the 4 PCs I've built (3 are in use, 2 of them I use) they have all used different brands of Mobos (Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock, MSI). My favorite ones are the MSI and Asus ones (they have the best BIOSes). Asrock is in the happy middle (I don't hate or like them, my feeling is natural).  Then while Gigabyte makes good GPUs, their Mobos are trash mainly because of the BIOS (or lack of).

    Hi everyone!

I've been on the fence on this for quite some time, and finally gave it a good bit of though after this writing heavy & video editing semester.

I write a TON of (research) papers, which means i need to be able to have chrome up to look up articles, adobe for pdfs, and word to actually write the document. The video editing comes in for my graduate assistantship where I have to edit video lectures for teachers, my own tutorial videos, or other videos my supervisors made. Nothing taxing (it all ends up at 720p, but i like getting the highest possible resolution and downscaling for better results). Anyway with that said, does anyone have any opinions?

I do have a laptop and am considering getting a desk mount for to use with my desktop monitor but am somewhat worries about height, etc. (honestly, the additional wiring kinda bothers me). Whatever is cheaper and best to increase productivity. I also gave Synergy to not buy other (cheap wireless logitech nonsense) peripherals for the laptop setup. Any suggestions or ideas will help

So what I did was take two Asus Ve228h 1080p Monitors and put them on a WALI display arm (I don't really recommend this one for a few reasons though. I will probably get a different one of I can't the drooping (loose) arm.). Anyway I have one in portait and one in landscape and I love it. The arm also has cable management and the ability to be clamped or free standing (most arms have these features).

For the multiple computer situation I recommend either remoting in to the other PC (though TeamViewer or Windows Remote desktop), try Mouse with out boarders (a Microsoft Garage project that works better than synergy in my experience), or buy another keyboard and mouse (I used the Logitech k400r keyboard and mouse combo when I was also using my laptop/2nd desktop in addition to my main desktop).

The worst mistake I did was ditch the two monitors for the last 6 months and instead went to one big monitor. I switched back when I came home for the Summer and honestly like it better.

Here's what my two monitors look like. I have since flipped the orientations of the monitors around.

Please tell me you're being sarcastic.  That man ranted like a mental patient for nearly 2 hours over misinformation.  The point Linus was making is that they should have parts available to fix it, at the customer's expense that is, but they don't.  Apple's response to any device breaking is, "Buy a new one!"  They intentionally do this for profit hence why people go to Rossman.  He gives a diagnostic for free then goes over the actual costs of parts and labor.  Apple, on the other hand, will tell you to buy a new device because that makes them more money.  So, even though Linus would be willing to pay for the repair, Apple wants him to spend more money for a new one.  Imagine if the client wasn't a techie.  Apple would give them a shit eating grin then say, "Sorry, we don't make parts to fix it.  Buy a new one!  Ya, the damage seems minimal...buy a new one...do it!"  <--This basically means they have snake oil salesmen over an actual repair department.  Do you see the problem with this?  One of the many reasons why I usually avoid Apple products.  Yet, this guy rants in support of Apple being dicks.  FFS, I dropped my GBA and Nintendo gave me quote for a new screen.  Apple, "Ya, buy a new device!"  No, it's not about costs it's about Apple refusing to repair let alone make the parts forcing you to buy a new device because that gets the more money.  Apple is notoriously anti-consumer(this bs), anti-government(tax-dodging), anti-repair(this bs and the lawsuits again), and anti-creativity(because sales over a useful device are more important).  That last one is another reason why Woz left.

I know Apple is anti-repair and such, but this isn't surprising.  Honestly, if I bought a closed system device I would check for "repairability" if I needed to fix it for cheap/ upgrade it myself. My iPad for example, I have Apple Care on it because I know they can be a pain to fix (didn't plan on opening it anyway) and also I have a data plan that I pay monthly on it. Anyway when I bought my Helios 300, I almost went and bought a Macbook, but didn't because of its lack repairability (I may buy a Mac for Development work at some point though) and bought the Helios because I know it is "easy" to upgrade and fix. Also that man is Eli the Computer Guy who has worked in the IT bussiness for many years (he even uses Macs himself). Is some of his opinion out there? Yes.

Linus's best bet is to part out the system, sell the cpu, the memory, the ssds (if not soldered), and maybe the chassis. For the mainboard, psu, and gpu he may be able to sell but he may just have to cut his loses. Anyway, if he was able to put that system back together and if I was someone that was looking to buy it I would not because it no longer has a warranty.

I don't think so - Linus talked about his discussions w/ Mindchop during a few WAN shows - after asshole fanboys started to attack the kid - and Linus clearly said that the kids MCN was shitty and basically just didn't follow through when he didn't receive the Button. They essentially abandoned him.

I also have no confirmation on when they started manually reviewing each Play Button application.

Go to the bottom of this page. https://www.youtube.com/yt/creators/awards/

Presumably the metric is much easier to “achieve” since there are more people watching videos now.

So rather than increase the milestone, they make you apply so they weed out people who can’t be assed?

I guess so. Apparently they will review each one that applies before sending a button.

  6. 2 hours ago, NvidiaIntelAMDLoveTriangle said:

That got people upset, because for Linus that button was something sentimental, it was something he accomplished. Mindchopper just wanted to complete his collection with someone else's trophy so he can slap his name on top of it.

Whats interesting is now Youtube has decided to not give play buttons to everyone anymore. You can "Apply" for one and that's it.

  7. Apparently, the 2nd round of the NCIX auction has a lot more stuff that wasn't sold at all at the 1st auction. Plus there is some stuff that didn't sell the first time.

Best bet is to save up. I almost went down that route a few years ago, so instead I saved up and ended up building a decent pc. Then after I got a decent job, I saved up to upgrade to the parts that are currently in my rig.

Being open to reason yourself would be a good start. If this thread is anything to go by he's clearly right to not trust your decision making.

You bring up a very good point there that I didn't realize til now. @Zacspark how old are you? I say this because if you are younger, decision making can sometimes be bad due to lack of maturity. I know that when I was younger I made some bad decisions (I was more mature than others but still) both purchasing wise and other things in my life. Heck even now at 19 and in college I can make some stupid decisions (its nothing compared to when I was 12-14ish). You may want to hold off on buying until you do research and maybe? save more money.

Wow!! That was quick! How fast is that i5 3570k?

The thing is that intel CPUs age well. I used the same i3 laptop as a main pc for 4 years and a 2ndary for another 2 equaling 6 years of use. Get it then later on upgrade to a i7 3770k (which can be had for around $200) used. Then flip the i5 3570k for around $100. Even now this system is a good value

Not hard to imagine since it's about 44 TB total in size, University/College can easily afford multiple servers into a cluster to support campus wide network load for student's file shares and SSD/NVMe make that pretty affordable. Let's assume one server can support 4 NVMe via motherboard and have 2 x16 PCI-e slots (which each can support 4 M.2 Slots with Dell Quad M2 Slots Adapter) You could buy 2TB PCIe NVMe from Samsung 960 Pro Series for each slot and you basically have about 12 slots total from above configuration and that give you 24 TB at ~63GB/s theoretically when using Raid configuration for the price of around ~$15,400 .00 for storage and adapters alone. That's pretty fairly affordable for a server that is meant to serve campus wide activity. If university wanted to, they could build such a system to provide each student with about 50 gb or more shared drive since not all students are going to even use or fill the shared drive space especially when they have significant budget like at least a million dollars.

You got a good point there. I pay around $400-500 a year for technology services. I think mine is a little higher because I am an IT major, but we get access to things other people don't like VMWare ESXI Servers (I think it's called Horizon now), a Suse Server for programing, and other things like MS Dreamspark (has MS software licenses).

each student has 19 tb each

Keep in mind that is probably the total space of the server and they don't know how to set space quotas. My high school had passwords sets to our mascot, Password1, and other stupid stuff and the school quickly learned their lesson. Even after that a student got into a teacher's share somehow, took a test key, give it out because she didn't believe him, and then the school expelled him and took him to court. The court ended up throwing the case out but he was still expelled.

They would probably take you to court for pirating (I knew some people that did that while the firewall was down and passwords were still Password1) because they might have gotten a thing from their ISP threating to take legal action for pirating at some point too. That is a thing here in the US, at most colleges they make us install a program that is supposed to prevent pirating on our computers in addition to their firewall, but I have never tried it to see what happens because I don't pirate.

Why? Schoolwork doesn't take up a lot of space. The issue is that kids are installed/storing games, which they shouldn't be doing at school anyway.

The only class that would use the same amount of space as a game would be a media/video editing class, but that would be accounted for.

The school shouldn't have to shell out for HDDs or even USB drives, should be on the students to pay for

Most than likely the teachers don't have space. I knew teachers that would ask me why it says their Network drive was full, others had external hard drives, and the funniest one is that one teacher had a Ziploc full of promotional thumb drives her husband got from his work that she used.

With that said media classes do use a lot of space, in fact there was a few times my hs's media server was full and stuff had to be deleted.

Same here. The organization I work for uses network Windows accounts and only allows 100MB of storage per user. Mind you we have about 17,000 clients, but still, only 100MB.Google Drive is used a lot here.

I'm surprised my college even gave students 4gb of space considering that there is around 11,000 students at my college. Personally I just use my OneDrive because then it automatically syncs between my PCs (even though I can access my network drive anywhere over ftp). But then again most of the PCs here are thin clients so that saves on lincensing fees and probably makes up for it.

yeah we use legit copy's of games other and well known sources

we also don't have a set amount of storage

    the games are legit copy's

They are probably out of room and need the space. In high school they gave everyone 500mb and my last two years of HS they pushed everyone to use the space in their Google Drive. They even ran out of space on their shared server one time and I thank they had to delete stuff. With that said I knew people that had games installed and the teacher made them remove them.

Even now at college they limit us to 4gb on our network drive and that is for everything (desktop, documents, and such) and you can't save locally because the PC wipes itself after you log off. Personally I don't use their computers that much and instead use my iPad and desktop in my dorm room (I have a laptop I use sometimes but it's a heavy gaming laptop). Also I have 1tb of space on my school's OneDrive account and I pay for that in tuition.

With that said you don't own the servers and if you go read your handbook it probably says not to be gaming on it. You there to learn (even if it's blowoff thale last bit, it was for me and I only needed one class to graduate my last semester).

Let me know what you guys think. I think this would be a really cool video idea with a The Office esque ltt video for csf

I would like to see that, but there are some issues doing that. The biggest one is copyright. They filmed a volleyball video Top-Gun style? And it never got posted for that implied reason. Csf could easily make more content in the summer though.

    Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my system, I've already chose most of the parts, but I am worried about the cooling. I do not plan to manually overclock it, I just want my CPU to stay really cool so there won't any issues.

    • Do you think Cooler Master Hyper RR-212E-20PK-R2 is good enough for i7-8700k ?
    • If not what other cooler would you recommend ? (water/air)
    • If I would overclock which cooler would you recommend ? (water/air)

While it could work, just no. I say that because there is a reason why CM (and others) make more expensive coolers. I have a 212 evo on my Skylake Xeon System that's at my mom's house (my sister uses it) and it works but that is a 80w TDP chip (which is less than the 95w TDP 8700k processor). Now on my personal rig I run a 7700k (a 91w TDP chip) and I am using a Noctua NH-U12S in push/pull (a fan on the front pulls the air in and one in the back pushes out, overkill on fans but if a fan dies I am still fine). With that said my mobo died after a BIOS update (when I was upgrading from the Xeon to my i7) and while I waited for a month on the RMA I had to use my mATX board. The issue with that is that board was incompatible with my noctua cooler, so I used a Intel stock cooler and that cooler struggled so I put a fan on my side panel to direct more air. With that said the 212 doesn't do much better cooling than a stock cooler on a higher TDP chip. Why do you think Intel stopped including stock coolers with the K SKU chips 6th gen on? Anyway, even if you don't overclock Intel Turbo boast will not be able to boast as high as it could (Turbo boast makes some difference).

    Tldr: Just don't use a 212 evo
