  1. It happens in other games, mainly DOTA2 where the framerate is consistently maxed out. But in that game the whine is very high pitched and less noticeable. It's just weird to me because I've never gotten coil whine at 60fps before, but Dark Souls in PC is a train wreck of a game so it's not totally shocking. Gigabyte G1 gaming 980ti
  2. I've been playing Dark Souls all day and just started to notice a strange sound coming from my GPU. It doesn't sound like coil whine, it's much lower pitched and sounds like grinding. It's not the fans, the noise occurs whether the fans are on or off, and the noise differs in frequency depending on how I move the camera in the game. After opening and closing the game a few times my GPU driver crashed. The game isn't wrecking my GPU either, usage hovers at around 60% and temperature stays at around 58C. Is this just a form of coil whine? It wasn't happening earlier in the day but I've been running my GPU for close to 12 hours now so maybe that did something?
  3. Basically its a matter of how much you have to lower your settings. I don't think there is any game that will be straight up unplayable, except maybe for those terrible ports that are just copy-pasted from the console version with no video settings to adjust.
  4. What games do you want to play? The 750ti gets a bad rap but it's surprisingly capable, especially for last-gen games. Yes you will need to lower the settings in most games but it is by no means a potato. If you're really worried about it, maybe delay your build a bit so you can afford the 370.
  5. You could look at the last years models, the PG278Q and the XB270HU, but both had some QC problems, especially the Acer. Buying the revised versions is a smarter move in this case.
  6. There are really only two, Asus PG279Q or the Acer XB217HU. They are both essentially exactly the same, just pick the one that you can get for cheaper
  7. I know it's hard to gauge if a game is actually bad nowadays with all the haters trying to be cool that swarm every new release, but trust me when I say that Duke Nukem Forever is not a game you want to play. If you're REALLY curious, buy it on sale and play it for an hour. If you don't like it, just get a refund.
  8. Your post is contradictory. You say that the new computer you get will not be used for gaming, then ask if you should build a gaming PC. Obviously not if the new computer is not primarily for gaming. If your laptop plays CS:GO to your liking then you answered your own question. Just buy a mac and build a gaming PC down the line if you really want one. If you have the money for it regardless it shouldn't be a big deal.
  9. Windows 10 has decent UI scaling for those scenarios. But trying to game at 4K with even a 980M is not going to be fun if you play anything remotely intensive. Playing at 1080 shouldn't look too bad though, at least it scales perfectly.
  10. Do you have a backup GPU? Selling your GPU to buy a nice monitor is like selling your engine so you can get fancy new tires.
  11. Yeah you download it an it sits on your hard drive. You can play it whenever you want, online or off.
  12. You can play games in offline mode, but your games won't sync to the cloud until you go online again.
  13. I would pass on it until you can upgrade your system. The minimum requirements call for a quad core CPU, and a 660 just barely slips by the minimum GPU requirement. Expect to play on absolute minimum settings with a poor framerate. If you have a console save yourself the misery and just play it on that.
  14. Gsync is godlike, but for your setup I'd probably pass on it now, but make sure to get it next time when you upgrade your monitor resolution. The 980 handles 1080p so well that Gsync would be mostly unnecessary.
  15. I bought a tablet for the express purpose of uploading manga to it to read. Apparently that is too great a task as my tablet (Galaxy tab 4 7.0) can't seem to read the images I transfer in the correct order. MOST of them are in order, but not all of them. The most common problem is that the last few images in the sequence will be brought to the front, or some images from the front will be sent to the back. I have also encountered it just randomly flinging images anywhere it wants. What could cause this? The files are clearly in order in windows, and when I connect my tablet to my PC they show up as in order on my SD card. But for some reason inside the tablet they get mixed around and the only way to fix it (so far) is re-uploading and hoping for the best. Tablet is running Android 4.4.2 Is there any mod I can install that will allow me to actually move the photos around and have it stay that way? Might I be able to pad both ends of the folder with "junk" images so it doesn't matter if they get moved around? This is extremely infuriating because this thing is failing at literally the only thing I need it to accomplish.
  16. Simple question, am I more likely to encounter a CPU bottleneck by playing games at higher resolutions? Or is it the GPU that isn't keeping up? Obviously there is more data being sent due to more pixels, but that is also offset by a lower frame rate (unless it's an old game). Obviously this stresses the GPU, but does it also place a disproportionate strain on the CPU?. Which one will crumble first assuming each is high end (5820K/6700K/980ti/FuryX) and no other bottlenecks exist (RAM/VRAM/game optimization)?
  17. Did you miss the part about the r9 290? You can pretty much play anything with that.
  18. Of course they don't REQUIRE one, but if you plan to do 3 monitor gaming the processing power and VRAM will help a lot. If you just want to power 3 displays with no games get a much lower end card.
  19. 980ti has the best value and the best performance. Easy decision.
  20. Getting an unbiased opinion of Macs here is impossible. That being said, the Lenovo is a hugely better value for your money, but in all likelihood the Mac will outlast it.
  21. If the game is coded to function perfectly at 60fps, nothing you can do will change that. Accept that the master race has failed you and move on.
  22. Almost every relevant Final Fantasy game is on Steam. If you're too cool for JRPGs, play the Metro Redux games.
