Not all TN panels are crap quality, my 5 year old Samsung TN panel has pretty good colors. In contrast my friend's little brother got a Samsung monitor with his Cyberpower PC and it looks like crap.

If your looking into 144hz monitor this BenQ one seems pretty damn good in terms of color:  http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XL2420TE-Performance-24-Inch-Professional/dp/B00D7IG556

Linus also did a video of this monitor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6wIMaYjklE

IPS are going to be better in terms of view angles and color accuracy which would be more important to someone who does video and photo work and not important at all to someone who only plays games on their PC.  Some people say they are not good for gaming because of their response times but I've managed to get pretty with Counter Strike with a monitor that supposedly has an 8ms response time.

As for VA I have heard its like the in between a TN and IPS panel, but I don't have any personal experience with them

Personally I'm going to be taking some Photo and Video classes so I'm planning on purchasing this Asus IPS panel if your interested:  http://www.amazon.com/Series-PB238Q-23-Inch-LED-lit-Monitor/dp/B00906GBBC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385526970&sr=8-1&keywords=pa+238q

Sorry I can't give you a straight answer as I have not been privileged to use that many types of monitors. (not enough money for that)

Just to add, IPS monitors might be interested by some gamers, such as myself, who wants to fully enjoy games visuals and art style. It really shines the hard work done by artists.

Now of course it depends on the games you play, where you might care or not. I know a friend that won't even mind if their games are texture-less (solid color). In fact, he even told me multiple times, that he would prefer it for higher fps (he mostly plays FPS games, mostly Counter Strike). So we are all different, and see things differently.

There is nothing like playing AC4 and looking at the gorgeous blue water on an ips. Regardless of refresh rate.

Yes that is a very nice monitor. I don't know anyone here or at another forum I participate in, that was not satisfied by it.

There is a newer version of the monitor, but has been moved to Professional grade series.

It uses a different (better) LG IPS panel, and isn't hit by manufacture errors like the U2312HM sadly faces.

Same monitor in terms of features, the warranty is identical. There is a 23 inch and 24inch version, but both 1080p. The difference isn't major per say, but it does feature an actual dimming circuit for the backlight and not use a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to control it, a feature previously found on the higher end models, and features even faster internals, with near 1ms input lag (not to be confused with response time)

It is the Dell P2414H and P2314H

Check it out:
