Gaming/Digital Art PC for my sister

Quadlazer

1. Budget & Location

Under $1500 for everything. Located in California, USA. In store pickup at Frys, Microcenter, etc. possible.

2. Aim

A PC that can play WoW, LoL, various middle of the road Steam games. Also used for digital drawing, animation, photo manipulation, and video editing. Overclocking is not a concern, but I'll try it if the system is rock solid.

3. Monitors

A 23"+ IPS main monitor and a secondary drawing tablet like the Wacom Cintiq, or a Chinese knockoff, like the Bosto 22U mini, Yiynova MVP22U (v3), or Huion GT-220. Expect to spend $400-600 on the tablet. Almost considering an iPad Pro + Pencil for $800.

4. Peripherals

Basic keyboard and mouse. Not wireless. Macro keys on the KB would be nice.

I think I'm sticking with Intel and Nvidia. This is what I've built so far, but price is a little high once you add in the tablet:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($223.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Better PSU, cooler and if you don't need CUDA, GPU. :D Please remember to follow your own threads. It's the smallish button above the big orange one.

GPU maybe a little overkill a 960 would do just fine I reckon!!! Maybe a HDD insted if she isnt bother to much by boot times??

You're probably right on the 960. Offers a good update path too. Just trying to see what I could squeeze in the budget.

SSD is more for loading Photoshop and Manga Studio files quickly. I don't think I'm ever building a PC with a HDD main disk any more.

What about a 4790K if the plan is video editing / animation?

I don't think the $80 extra is worth it. Lots of Adobe software is gpu accelerated now, anyway. Do you feel otherwise?

i'd say go for a i5-6500 or a 6600, unless a 4690 is very cheap, and i'd even drop down to a 950, as you'd want to spend a bit more on an accurate monitor or even a pre-calibrated one.

Thanks again! Followed.

I'm never sure about CUDA, but I do believe many Adobe apps (Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere) would benefit from CUDA acceleration. But maybe I'm out of date, and AMD is fine.

I looked at a Skylake build, and I found it to be more expensive overall (z170 board + DDR4).

fair enough just a thought as it's a new platform, but just thought of one option if it's available a Xeon E3-1231 V3, as it's not much more than a 4690k and offers hyperthreading and currently cheaper than skylake.

It's pushing it, but you don't have to get the Fury X. Put that in just cause much Fury. Such X. Change it to what you please.

I added the cost of the tablet ($650) to make that clear it needs to be part of the total.

Ok yeah SSD's do make a massive difference!! And maybe if you really wanna make sure u hit budget is a high end 950, but a 960 is best bet there tbh!!

I'll explain why I picked that cpu. All price are from pcpp

Xeon E5 1620 v3 @ 3.5GHz 4c/8t $277

Xeon E3 1231 v3 @ 3.4GHz 4c/8t $245

Core i5 4690K @ 3.5GHz 4c/4t $260

Core i5 6600K @ 3.5GHz 4c/4t $275

Core i7 4790K @ 4GHz 4c/8t $310

Core i7 6700K @ 4GHz 4c/8t $360 (in store pickup only)

Both Core i7s are out because they cost way more than the Xeon E5. Up next off the list are them Core i5s. Price difference between them and the Xeon E5 are $17 dollars for the 4690K and $2 dollars for the 6600K. For $17 extra, I'll rather get that Xeon E5 because it has HT so that's 8 threads, 4 more than the Core i5.

Finally it's down to the Xeon E3 vs Xeon E5. Both are quad core with HT, that's 8 threads on both cpus. Xeon E3 runs at 100MHz slower. Price difference between them is $32. Spending $32 dollars more, I get a faster clock cpu, a platform that can go beyond the 4 core limit, and quad channel DDR4.

Intel Xeon E5 1650 v3 @ 3.5GHz 6C:12T / CM212 Evo / Asus X99 Deluxe / 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 3000 Trident-Z / Samsung 850 Pro 256GB / Intel 335 240GB / WD Red 2 & 3TB / Antec 850w / RTX 2070 / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy X360 15: Intel Core i5 8250U @ 1.6GHz 4C:8T / 8GB DDR4 / Intel UHD620 + Nvidia GeForce MX150 4GB / Intel 120GB SSD / Win10 Pro x64
