$1,500 Gaming Rig Advice

Suisiders

1. Budget & Location: $1,500 w/ taxes US

2. Aim: This PC will be used for gaming 95% of the time. The other 5% is web browsing, Youtube, Crunchyroll, and Netflix.

3. Monitors: I plan on using a single 1920x1080p 60hz monitor. I might add a second monitor later for web browsing.

4. Peripherals: I need a single monitor, mouse, and keyboard for this build.

5. Why are you upgrading? I'm upgrading because my 10 year old PC finally died. I think it's time for a good gaming PC!

This is what I have come up with and suggestions are welcome.

i5 6500 $200

I'd suggest you start here, maybe add an SSD

the build includes a 21:9 1080p IPS Free-sync display, just gotta keep your FPS in games around 60, which given AMD's recent driver update shouldn't be too big of an issue and can be done rather cleverly if you take the time to tune the card per game to lower it's power and heat output

for the same price of that display you also have the option of a 1080p 144hz free-sync display

also the 390 is a fair better choice than the 970, it has 125% more VRAM, bit more performance, and potentially better DX12 support

Also there's really not much point in getting a 390/970 for 1080p gaming, a 380/X can do the job well for less

This build is good, however he can buy a key off G2A and maybe invest in another part of the build like a monitor.

True, not everyone wants to get these from G2A/Reddit, I would definitely do that.

I assume your talking about buying a Windows 10 key on G2A? If so I'll go that route if its legit. Also why the R9 Fury with only a 1080p 60hz monitor? A lot of people tell me a R9 390 and GTX 970 is already overkill for a 1080p 60hz monitor. I don't need an i7 or 16gb of ram since I'm not rendering or anything that would need that setup.

Does overclocking make a big difference in game performance? I notice everyone seems to be recommending the "K" processors even though I originally had a i5 6500.

In general, no. there are some cases wich this may apply such as dual cores to make it not bottleneck with the GPU.

I have no interest in OCing or running multiple GPUs. So it comes down to i5 4590/H97 + R9 390 or i5 6500/H170 + R9 390. I'll probably go i5 4590/H97 since I won't use m.2 or usb 3.1 on the H170 and performance is around the same. Plus i5 4590/H97 is cheaper by 150+ and Microcenter doesnt have an itx h170 but they have an itx h97 so I can use the Phanteks Evolv ITX case.
