I built a 150W 6ch. amplifier in an ATX PSU chassis. Thoughts?

iamdarkyoshi

So I have some leftover parts from when my dad worked for JBL. More specifically, parts from this. I had been using three 50W amplifiers inside of a rackmount high current power supply. I just mounted the face of the transistors to the heatsinks on the side of the chassis and they were always stone cold, passively cooled. After a year of using this, I decided to rebuild it in a far smaller chassis. So I did. @hypnodog sent me an old HP PSU, the kind that is larger than a standard ATX PSU (it uses a 92mm fan instead of an 80mm)

I forgot to take pictures during the build, but I basically have three of these amps mounted to a CPU heatsink, and the CPU heatsink is mounted to the fan. The amp uses 12v AC to power it, the bridge rectifier and capacitor bank are inside the unit. The switch on the top switches the remote signal of the amps, as well as the fan. I get a little bit of hum, but it is nothing major. It is only noticeable with my ear next to the speaker. I want to eventually find a bigger transformer, as a 12W transformer is a little bit... underpowered, thus why I used a bunch of filter capacitors. Still, it went very loud, enough for me to bother the neighbors.

The fan is silent, it moves a gentle breeze over the heatsink and through the amp PCBs. It has 25W per channel.

I am very impressed with how this thing turned out. I do wish I would have shortened the PCB a little bit, as the back is bent outwards a bit. Gain cannot be adjusted without opening the case, so I just use the volume buttons on my keyboard. This is nothing different from the old one.

Picture of the finished amp:

I wanted to paint it red, but I did not have time.

How do you think I did?

No, the amps used here are decades old, finding more would be impossible. It took me all day to design and build this. I might make my own from scratch and sell them.

I ended up using the chassis and scrapping the PSU board

I guess it stunk too much? lmfao oh well it was 10 years old anyway a cap should have leaked by now
