Security camera footage archive

MechEdge

I don't know if this is the correct subforum, but there is no security subforum and these are IP cameras so I think it'll do. If not, feel free to move it mods.

We have 2 security cameras installed at my parents' office, currently I'm using blue iris on a PC to record 24/7 and send alerts whenever it detects movement. I need a way to store the footage somewhere else other than the computer, because if it gets stolen I loose all the footage anyway, so it's useless. I thought about storing the footage in an external HDD connected to the PC via a long usb cable and hidden somewhere. Would that work? Do you guys have any better ideas? I'm all ears. (Just no cloud saving because I tried that already and it doesn't work, the internet is too slow.)

That's a good idea, but it's WAY over my budget

Hook up a WD Red to an old or spare PC.

IMO your best bet would be to put the cams on the home network together with something like a NUC or an old PC.  Attach a big enough HDD to it (either using a hotswap bay or external) and hide it somewhere in a hidden compartment near something that makes enough noise to mask the HDD's sound.

Have it connected to a nas and have that sync with a nas you place at your parrents or friends house :)

You can place these in secure location inside the house. I have 2 hideaways for my Wifi routers in my ceilings, the OP can do this as well it is a simple thing to do and about 15 minutes to make. Most thieves go for easy access items, it is unusual for them to tear open walls and ceilings for stuff.

Same thing with a network NAS, mine is in a 3/4 inch plywood box with a padlock on it in the basement anchored to the joists (yes it is vented).

Yes. Just stash it somewhere so it doesn't get stolen as well.

Can can just use an old PC as a file server and put in some WD Purple or Red drives in it and have your software automatically back up to it if it can.
