Best way is to go ahead and experiment.

So my other question is there alternative programs that are free or cheaper then google sketchup? I really don't want to pay $700 dollars for a license.

Blender. Steep-ass learning curve, but extremely powerful and versatile.

My rig: Intel Core i7-8700K OC 4.8 | NZXT Kraken X62 | ASUS Z370-F | 16 GB Trident Z RGB 3000 (2x8) | EVGA 1070 SC | EVGA SuperNova NEX650G1 | NZXT H700 | Samsung 250GB 850-EVO | 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs

Well Sketchup pro is 700 dollars, but the free version of Sketchup is more than enough if you're just making simple 3d models.

Archicad is a good alternative, they usually give licenses for educational purposes.

Nobody mentioned Maya or 3ds Max - Those are industry standard in 3d character and environment creation. Normally it costs $3500 for a license but you can get a student version for free and since they are used so widely there are a million tutorials.
